Hello All!
Firstly, a huge welcome to everyone joining us this year! It was a pleasure to meet you all at Freshers' Fair today. Hopefully you are all excited to throw yourselves into Judo and we are sure you will enjoy it as much as we do ( i.e. a LOT! )
If you are instead coming back for another year of fun and training ... welcome back ! This year will be even more exciting and rich in opportunities !
Here is a list of practicalities for the beginning of term. If you have any other question don't hesitate to ask.
Training Sessions:
We run three training sessions per week:
Wednesday - 12:00 to 2:00 pm
Thursday - 5:30 pm to 7 pm
Friday - 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm
All our sessions are held in the Union Gym, Level 3 of the Imperial College Union Building.
Generally all Thursday sessions are specifically catered towards beginners but feel free to come to as many sessions as you can / want!
IMPORTANT: There will be no session this Friday (9th) as the Union is closed for the Fresher's Ball.
First Session:
Our first Taster Session is TOMORROW ( Wednesday 7th ) from 12:00 to 2:00 pm.
Try to be there a bit earlier so that you can get changed in time.
Please bring comfortable sports clothing that does not restrict your range of movement. Some tracksuit trousers and an old tshirt you don't mind getting stretched would be just fine. We do have a selection of judogis ( Judo uniforms ) that you can borrow but they will be on a first come first served basis.
In tomorrow's session we will focus on teaching you the basics, giving you a gentle introduction to Judo ( literally meaning the 'gentle way' ). You will learn how to fall ( first step in learning how to throw others ) and progress on some basic ground and standing techniques. If you are already a seasoned judoka don't worry though ! The session will be perfect to get you back in the swing of things and there will be plenty of other higher graded members to train with :)
If you cannot be there tomorrow just come along any other of our sessions. There will always be someone there to help you!
Where is the Union Gym?
If it's your first time here at Imperial here is a short visual guide on how to reach the Union Gym, where we always train.
Address:
Imperial College Union
Level 3
Beit Quadrangle
Prince Consort Rd
Kensington, London SW7 2BB
This is the main entrance to the Beit Quadrangle, viewed from Prince Consort Road:
[cid:9645bfe4-a172-46a9-86ba-aa068735b2f3]
Once you have entered just cross the inner square and go to Level 3 ( the last floor ) of the building in front of you ( Union Building). The gym will be right there:
[cid:1034e5ec-354e-4103-9af2-01c3c8186f83]
If you were here at Freshers' Fair this is simply the last floor of the building where our stall was.
Membership and fees:
We are one of the cheapest Martial Art Clubs here at Imperial.
If you are already 100% sure that you want to join the Club you can already get our membership and mat fees from our Shop<https://www.imperialcollegeunion.org/activities/a-to-z/014> ( https://www.imperialcollegeunion.org/activities/a-to-z/014 )
If not don't worry! This week and next week's sessions will all be completely free! Just come along to any of them and give Judo a go! We'll help you sort everything out if you need help :)
Social Media:
We have a fairly active Facebook group where most of the more informal and spontaneous organisation happens. This includes updates on socials, competitions, training times, judo videos and much more !
https://www.facebook.com/groups/161492510549009/
We also have Twitter (@Imperial_Judo) and Youtube (IC Judo) accounts [ all links are in the footer banner ]
All important information will be sent over this mailing list.
Hope to see all of you on the mat!

Hey guys,
Received this message from a guy at Imperial interested in starting a BJJ club, this had been a possibility that some of us at the club had considered previously but did not carry it out due to various circumstances.
If any of you are interested in taking part in creating a new club at imperial or know anyone at uni who might be interested contact Joshua directly. This could be a very good opportunity not only to set up the club, but also get world-class instructors from the Gracie Gyms to up your ne-waza game considerably.
Hope the holidays are going well for you guys, hope to see some of you soon,
Guillermo

Subject: Setting up of a BJJ Society
Hey,
I don’t current train Judo - I am however training brazillian jiu jitsu down at Gracie Barra Fulham - in particular I train often with Johannes - He says he trains with some of you guys as well as mentioning you have a couple of brazillian jiu jitsu guys in your club.
I was thinking about trying to set up a society for BJJ. I was wondering what you thought? or if you could see if anyone in your club is interested.
Ill be honest I have no idea how setting up a society works, but I’ve seen the form and need a couple of additional members to get started.
The idea would be to pay a membership (minimal) and then potentially a per class fee to bring one of the instructors from GBFulham onto campus to do a session. We have a few World class guys. As well as with the connections we have - Im sure we could run some special one off seminars with high profile visiting athletes, or I could see if I could get discounts / special deals for people joining GBFulham / the seminars they run.
I put a request to join the Facbeook group - I was wondering if it would be okay for me to post a similar message on there?
Ill probably message the union people so I can personally get more info about setting up a club
Cheers
Josh

Hey y'all,
The Union has banned us from using the Gym because of misunderstandings with the mats being left out on Wednesdays.
Therefore we will have no more sessions this academic year, the sanction will nt be applicable to next year's bookings and therefore next year's commitee need not worry.
Sorry about this guys, if we appeal and they retract the sanction we will inform you accordingly.
Hope you all have an amazing summer, hope to see you all soon!

Hey guys and gals!
So, the end of the year is slowly getting closer!! Hope exam preparation and life in general is going well for you guys :).
Fisrtly, I would like to remind you guys that have been coming to training sessions to buy the summer term mat fees (I myself had forgotten and bought them today) just to make things easier, find the link to the product here:
https://www.imperialcollegeunion.org/shop/club-society-project-products/jud…
On a different note, Sport Imperial have asked me if any of you would want to attend the ARCS award ceremony, it will be held at Heston sports ground and it is going to be the first ceremony of its kind, with dinner and drinks provided with the ticket. I leave here the information for the event, if you wish to attend be quick as the tickets are now on general sale:
ARCS – Appreciation, Recognition and Celebration of Sport
As you will now be aware ARCS will be taking place on the 18th June at Heston Sports Ground. The shortlist for nominees has been distributed via our social media, and you can find it here https://www.facebook.com/sportimperial Alongside these award Oli Benton will be handing out the ACC Colours on this evening, so it should be a great night to get down and celebrate with your team mates and fellow students!
Alongside the awards, below are some further details about the event:
· Transport – This is included in the £35 ticket price and will include return bus journey from South Kensington departing at 6pm (Beit Quad) to Heston Sports Ground and back again at the end of the evening.
· Champagne Reception – Upon arrival Students will hand in there ticket and receive a glass of champagne to get the evening started while they mingle and have pictures etc!
· Dinner – This will be a 3 course meal with a selection of meat and vegetarian/vegan options, Hannah Blandford is just firming the details for the menu, and this will be circulated in due course! Alongside the food, there will also be half a bottle of wine per person on the table, split into red and white options.
· Speakers – We have both Ami Williams (MBE) http://www.amywilliams.com/ and Ted Jackson http://www.iknowtedjackson.com/ speaking at the event, both have done fantastic things in their own disciplines so should be pretty inspirational to hear from.
· Photographs – Take that Photo will be attending to take formal shots of the groups in their finest clothing, very different from the usually muddy, sweaty shots! Alongside this Ben Lester (Varsity Photographer) will be attending to take the informal shots on the night.
· After Party – Our very own DJ India Jordan will be providing the entertainment for the evening, and as she has already hosted a number of union events, she’s a pretty popular choice, and I’m sure will put in some old favourites!
Clubs have the opportunity to purchase a table of 10 spaces up until the 3rd June, after this point tickets will go on general sale and those clubs wishing for more than 10 spaces can take up the tickets then. With regards to payment your members can purchase the tickets individually, or as a group, or you as a club can raise a purchase order for the spaces. We really hope that you and your club will join us on what looks to be a fantastic event!
f you wish to attend please send your RSVP and purchase your tickets from Tegan Pickles<mailto:t.pickles@imperial.ac.uk?subject=ARCS%20RSVP>.
That is all, sorry for the lengthy e mail, Good luck to you all!

Hey guys,
Last term is upon us and as always, a new term brings in a fresh batch of mat fees for us to pay!! If you are considering coming to the training sessions at any point during the term you should pay these.
you can find the product in the following link:
https://www.imperialcollegeunion.org/shop/club-society-project-products/jud…
Also, just to remind you guys that the Friday sessions are on as well as the usual sessions, but instead of paying the Fridays with matt fees, we are paying them in a session by session basis with 4 pounds being the price per session.
Hope everything is going well with exams/revision/freedom,
Guillermo
