                        Hi everyone!
Well it's not really SOS per se, but we do need help! If you are in
Singapore and find yourself zoning out in the summer heat too often with
nothing to do, swatting flies in the monotonous heat itching for some
excitement, volunteer to help out for UKBound today! Whether you have event
management experience or not, this is a great opportunity to learn and make
some friends in the process:) If you are interested, check out some of the
roles you can sign up for below:
*Pageant coordinator (Number of places: 2)
*
Fancy running a pageant? Pretty sure not many of your friends can boast of
such a feat, huh:) as a pageant coordinator, you'll be administrating the
pageant all the way from the selection of contestants to the crowning of
our new mr and ms ukbound! And you'll get that sweet sweet sneak peak at
our glamorous contestants in their gorgeous costumes way before any of us!
If this sounds like your kind of thing, sign up today!
*Sales Team
*
Ever missed an awesome event because you didn't even know it was happening?
Help other unfortunate souls escape that feeling by being a part of the
sales team! As part of this group, you will be moving around and actively
informing our clueless freshers about UKBound, while selling tickets to the
interested parties. A truly invluable role.
*Logistics*
Ninjas, assemble! If you wish not to be in the limelight but wish to be
equally important as everyone else, be part of the logi- Ninjas! After all,
what is an emcee without a mike? Or the contestant without her costume? Or
mr ukbound without his crown? Oh the horror. So join the ninjas! Save
ukbound from abject despair...
*Crowd control/interaction promoters*
Calling all socialites and really cool and funky people! UKBound is ALL
about interaction and mingling, and what better way to contribute by being
part of the audience, jumping into the fray and making friends with tonnes
of people? While you won't be involved in the planning, we will be
enlisting your help as interaction promoters to help us out during the
games to promote participation and to bring strangers together as friends:)
free karma up for grabs, yo. Not to mention the number of friend requests
on Facebook after;)

year! If you want to sign up to be part of this exciting team, or have any
clarifications, you can contact Ting Wei at eventsofficer1(a)ic-Singsoc.net.

                        Updates
Hi everyone,
So. Its summer and most of us are back in sunny Singapore. I hope everyone
is having a good time, wherever you are, waiting in London for the
Olympics, travelling the world, or just chillin' at home.
Let me cut to the chase and bring you the updates!
1. Pre-departure Talk will be held *this Friday* at *The Treasury*. An
amendment has been made to the timing since the previous KnT, sorry for the
error. The talk will now start at *7pm*. The website and Facebook page are
both correct. All are welcome to attend, but remember, freshers first.
2. There's a Team Sojourn briefing also on *Friday* at *Raffles City Tower*,
at *4.15pm*. This is for all OGLs, OGMs and Gamemasters.
3. One can hardly forget that DPM Dialogue is coming up too, on the *25th
of July*. If you want to see Ashley dancing on stage, engage DPM Teo on the
impact of social media, and have a good dinner all in one night, then do
not hesitate to sign up! Okay I'm kidding. Ashley's not dancing, but the
other bits are true.
4. We are looking for people to lead the Freshers' Walkabout on the *29th
of Sept*. Mark out the date and sign up today!
5. Check out the companies UKSSC has engaged for its career series, namely
Lantiq, Exxon Mobil, and Emerson.
6. Finally, there's a new clubbing event organised by the University of
Manchester! Details below.
Have a great summer!
Your faithful secretary,
Gabriel

 4. Freshers' Walkabout
Remember feeling like a complete blur sotong on your first day in London?
Remember how you were led by your amazing seniors around the area, who
navigated to all the essential places and good eats as if they had a
mini-map in their heads? Well, it's now your chance to be that senior.
We are looking for enthusiastic seniors who can commit the entire day of *29th
of September* (preferably arriving earlier) and are willing to bring the
freshers around on the walkabout. There is a big role to be filled here as
you will be giving the freshers their first impression of London. Those
with a good knowledge of the places around your previous hall (additional
halls are a bonus) and of course, the various routes to Imperial, would be
preferred. Needless to say, please make sure that you will be in London at
this time!
OGLs are encouraged to sign up as the freshers will already recognise you,
and so are Hall Seniors as the freshers will be seeing a lot more of you.
That said, everyone is welcome. (:
If you're interested, please drop me an email at
secretary(a)ic-singsoc.netwith your name, SG and UK contact nos., email,
date of arrival in the UK
and previous halls of residence. The most important thing to note is still
that you will be in London on the 29th and can commit the whole day. Thanks!
Your faithful secretary,
Gabriel Quek

                        Updates
Hi everyone,
Our logo design competition voting has been open since last Saturday, so
what are you waiting for? Vote now, and vote responsibly. Voting closes
this *Sunday, 1st July*! So do not tarry!
There are also more details for our Pre-Departure Talk out down below,
which our FRIENDS should take note of, especially those who will be
involved on that day.
And finally, it seems that whilst we have been mugging our heads off in
London, the online and social media in Singapore is, once again, in a
frenzy, this time spawning memes as if there's no tomorrow, with each
'faction' having its own supporters and dissenters. The strong voice of the
online citizen can clearly no longer be ignored by society, or even by the
government.
I mean, it seems like for every new issue of the KnT, there is some new
incident to be discussed. Surely this is a disturbing trend? How will the
government react to this rise of online and social media? How can we turn
this into a positive, cohesive force? Honestly, many of our parents'
generation are astounded by this pace of change. Perhaps it has come to us
to make our views heard. Let's make it happen, at the DPM dialogue.
Your faithful secretary,
Gabriel

                        Updates
Hi everyone,
It's been such a long time, hasn't it? I hope that everyone's exams have
been going well. For those who still have papers remaining, all the best!
So as expected, we have *tons* of updates for you all, due to our long
absence from the real world. And here they are:
1. Check out the Point Hope Book Prize, looks like a nifty offer. And
specially for ICSS too. How nice.
2. Our Pre-Departure Talk details are out
3. Logo Design Voting opens this Saturday
4. SFP was awesome, thanks for coming
5. There's a special Medical School event coming up
6. Summer is upon us! Yes, it is. The sun is unreliable these days. So,
check out your storage options and the classifieds page!
7. Our usual career stuff is up too
8. And the UKSSC is looking for Singapore Polytechnic and Republic
Polytechnic alumni to share their UK experience
Hope that wasn't too much of an information overload. But just hang in
there, the end is in sight!
Because, last but not least, we have the hottest item on this KnT! Not the
Toast, but the Dialogue Session with DPM Teo Chee Hean.
The recent spate of blogger controversies, including one which involved DPM
Teo himself, renders this dialogue session ever more urgent and relevant.
Social media has the potential to create greater social cohesion, or to
aggravate social disharmony. It gives the people greater voice, but will
they use it wisely? In Singapore's case, we are the generation that
determines the norms of online social behaviour. These norms will shape our
society, for better or for worse.
Whether you are a genuinely concerned citizen, or the typical kaypoh
Singaporean, this dialogue is really a chance to hear it all first hand
from none other than DPM Teo, the man of the moment. DPM Teo has previously
engaged many different audiences on the implications of social media on
society. (Examples include the annual Dialogue for the Community Engagement
Programme; and Singaporeans in Conversation 2011 "Your Next Move: Youth
Politics and the Future" dialogue)
At the same time, this dialogue is also a chance for us to express our
opinions on the issues at hand and our suggestions as to how they could be
handled. For although DPM Teo has experience in government and
policymaking, we may have better perception of the ground and upcoming
trends, since we all practically live on Facebook.
So yeah, sorry for saying the end was in sight. Seems like I can see a
pretty long way. By the way, the DPM Dialogue Session comes with dinner.
And dinner is always good. (: Hope to see you there!
Your ever-hungry secretary,
Gabriel

                        Updates
Hi everyone,
The deadline for the Temasek Holdings Recruitment has been extended to *29th
May, Tuesday*. In addition we would like to highlight that they are looking
for *graduating** biomedical science and medicine students* for a job
opportunity in their life sciences investment deparment. This is a *
recruitment* offer and *not* an internship offer.
Also, a reminder! The Seniors' Farewell Party is THIS SATURDAY.
Preparations and plans have been made, and the stage has been set for an
event you will never forget.
Finally, the summer storage costs £6.80 per week and not £6.80 per box per
week (for a maximum of 10 boxes. Additional boxes will be charged
accordingly. Check our website). Sorry for the mistake. Probably didn't get
my 7 hours of sleep. Yup, so its actually quite a good offer now. Do check
it out. Thanks!
Your faithful secretary,
Gabriel

                        Updates
Hi everyone,
The end of the academic year is in sight! What better way to celebrate than
to gather with your friends and come down for a final farewell to all who
are graduating this year, by signing up for Seniors' Farewell Party on the
26th of May (Sat)? Major Event 2012 T-Shirts will be given out then! It
promises to be an evening full of fun, laughs and reminiscence. But most
importantly, this is the final chance in London to surround yourself with
friends, many of whom have been as close as family in our second home.
Even sooner is the submission deadline for the 30th Anniversary Logo, so do
not tarry and put all that free time (for those who have completed their
exams) and amazing design skills to good use!
Finally, it is rare that we get the chance to engage one of our country's
key figures in a personal, face-to-face dialogue setting, on a topic that
is increasingly relevant to our generation. The hard truth is that the rise
of social media and its impact on society over the past few years has been
simply phenomenal. It is a topic close to our hearts and our daily habits.
What does this mean for our society? What does this mean for the future of
Singapore? Find out more at the DPM Dialogue. Details are below.
Thanks for reading (:

 1. Take a Break, Have a Kit-Kat
Hi Everyone!
Here’s a big thank you to those who came down to show your support for
the Spring Break Sports and Picnic!
It was unfortunate that the weather was wet and gloomy which hampered the
original plan of a sports and picnic session at Hyde Park. Nonetheless it
was extremely heartening that you all showed up at the Southside Social
Space to show your support and made the event possible. I hope that
everyone enjoyed the event and had their share of fun in one way or another.
We will certainly be organising more of such events in the year to come
and we’ll be looking forward to your support! Till then, all the best for
your examinations and may the odds be ever in your favour!
Your friendly Sports Officer,
Kai Qin
P.S. For those who played touch rugby, do check out the photos posted on

 9. SGin(C)
Message from the UKSSC:
Singaporeans in Conversation (SGin(C)) is looking for an organising
committee for the forum this year. With the theme set as "The Singaporean
Identity: Embracing the Inevitable? The Relevance of Who We Are", SGin(C)
is prepared to take the debate over the Singaporean identity to a whole new
level, exploring the vulnerability of our national identity to outside
influence. The recently concluded watershed elections surfaced a gnawing
concern among many Singaporeans - immigration. Consequently, immigration
brings with it an influx of foreign culture, the polemic question is: do we
insist on our own values and cultural norms or do we embrace the
inevitable? Should we integrate the immigrants' culture into ours or should
the onus be on them to integrate into society? Do we adapt or resist? Those
questions will remain unanswered unless you get involved. So please fill in
this application form if you wish to join the organising committee (SGin(C)
Committee Application
Form<http://e.groupspaces.com/click/230ae-1ez6m-km40je62y?u=http%3A%2F%2Fe.group…>

 7. 30th Anniversary Logo Design
In the face of ICSS’s 30th Anniversary, we are calling out to the avid

   3. Should not contain any objectionable content.
The process is as follows:
   1. Participants will submit their designs to
   liaisonsofficer(a)ic-singsoc.net by *18th May 2012*.
   2. Shortlisted designs will be voted for by the society.
   3. The design with the most votes will win!
To reward you for your effort, the winning entrant will also receive a £30
Marks and Spencers' voucher!

 8. Singapore Memory Project: Singapore Day
Hi everyone!
We have a message from the Singapore Memory Project. If you have any fond
memories from Singapore to share, please feel free to participate!
Hi there!
My name is Grace and I am from the Singapore Memory Project (SMP). We are
participating in Singapore Day (organized by the Overseas Singaporean
Unit), held at Prospect Park, Brooklyn, New York on 14 April 2012, and as
part of the activity, we are looking for memories of Singapore from
overseas Singaporeans to be contributed on our portal –
SingaporeMemory .
sg<http://e.groupspaces.com/click/21uvz-1ez6m-n78fvjdsl?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sin…>
.
The memories we are looking for are along the theme of “How far would you
go to feel at Home?”. Check out our blog
post<http://e.groupspaces.com/click/21uvz-1ez6m-n78fvjdsl?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ire…>
for
some memory triggers! The participant who submitted the most number of
memories will stand to win a US Amazon e-gift voucher*. Simply log on to
the portal to start a memory account and contribute your story! Tag each of
the memory with “Overseas Singaporeans” (very important step!), ‘coz that’s
how we identify the winner. There’s no limit to the number of memories
submitted as each contribution is considered as one entry. They could even
upload photos and videos in their contributions.
The closing date for contest is 20 April, and we will notify the lucky
winner through email. We hope you can help to publicise the above contest
to the members of your student association. Thank you!
*About the Singapore Memory Project*
SMP was started in 2010 to collect, preserve and provide access to memories
and stories related to Singapore. The goal of the project is to engage
individuals, communities, groups or institutions who have formed memories
and content about Singapore and would like to contribute them. We hope
this will build a culture of remembering which will nurture bonding and
rootedness.
