1. ICSS Ordinary General Meeting 2011 (9 Nov 2011)
Dear brothers and sisters,
In just two weeks, the 29th ICSS Executive Committee will be organising its
first *Ordinary General Meeting*. It will be a great opportunity for members
to step up and discover more about the direction which the Society is
heading in, as well as to engage the Exco with queries or suggestions. The
details of OGM are as below:
*Date: 9 Nov 2011
Time: 1300-1500h
Venue: RSM LT 1.31*
During the OGM, we will provide updates on future events for the coming
year, followed by a screening of *“(In)Sanity”, *the Major Event Production
2011. If you were part of the Cast and Crew of (In)Sanity, come down on the
9th of November to relive the memorable (and sometimes hilarious) moments
together with fellow Production Team members!
Limited edition *(In)Sanity DVDs*, including footage of the actual
performance as well as special features, will be distributed to members of
the Production Team during this time.
In addition, the winners for the *Wackiest Photo Competition *as well as the
*ICSS Fiesta *will be announced during OGM. *Membership cards *will also be
distributed for those who have registered as members, so do attend OGM and
pick up your exclusive membership cards to start enjoying the tantalising
restaurant discounts that membership has to offer!
See you there! :)

Singaporean talents. That is why we need you, and no prior experience is
required.

4. Floorball and Netball session (2 Nov 2011)
Here's a message from our Sports Officer, Yuxiang:
Hello all!
The next sport session, and final one before Nottingham Games, will involve
Floorball and Netball. In consideration of the limited time and venue
bookings we have, the session will have to be split into 2 halves, with
Floorball taking the first hour and Netball being played in the second.
The session will be on *2 Nov 2011 (Wed), 4-6 pm at Wilson House*. To fully
maximise the booking, and your playing times (especially when we only have 1
hour for each sport), please arrive early and ready to play by 4pm!
For the sportsmen and sportswomen in the Floorball and Netball Nottingham
Games Teams, do your best to attend your last official training slot in our
calendar. Although the focus would be tilted towards training for the
Nottingham teams, non-competitors are still welcome. Do join us and help
train up our athletes!
See you there. :)

usual). We’ll be meeting at the northern side of the Royal Albert Memorial,
the big, golden, obiang ttm statue. The picnic itself will be near the *horse

We’ll be having the following activities at the picnic:
- Football
- Frisbee
- Touch Rugby
- Captain's Ball
- The annual ICSS phototaking session - do stay till the end of the

OG to bring sufficient food* for potluck during the picnic itself as well!
*Wackiest Photo Competition *
There’s plenty of things to see and do in Hyde Park, so we’re holding the
Wackiest Photo Competition, and the theme is *Forever Love*.
Simply take the wackiest photo you can think of, with anything in Hyde Park:
it can be the statues, the benches, even the geese in the pond! After that,
send it to eventsofficer1(a)ic-singsoc.net by *Sunday, 16th October* with a
short description of how it fits with the theme, and await judging by none
other than Fong himself.
Remember, the funnier the photo, and the funnier the description, the more

3. ICSS Fiesta 2011
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Hi everybody!
Hope that everyone has already settled down comfortably in their
halls or their own private residences by now! Since you people
have already settled down, now is the time to start exploring
your kitchen and your new cooking recipes that you are
desperately asking your mama to send you these few days. Now is
also the time for you to *level up* your culinary skills.
Ladies and gentlemen, introducing to you our casual event -
**FIESTA!!!**
In the previous year, we have observed a cooking culture heavily
embedded in the Singaporean Freshers 2010-2011 (i.e our batch),
and we would definitely love to pass on this special homely
culture to our next batch of freshers. Fiesta is an event for
ex-hall seniors to come together to cook and eat with our cutesy
juniors currently living in the halls.
Autumn is settling in, so what’s better than staying in the
warmth of the kitchens, with seniors and freshers cuddling
together, eating and talking crap? Freshers, if you are still in
the process of polishing up your art of cooking, fret not! Please
do not feel inferior because this will be your chance to learn
the ropes from your seniors.
* View image: *

In addition, we've put in place a series of post-arrival events
to help ease our Freshers' transition into their new phase of
life in London. We have affectionately termed it the 3-in-1

the events to get to know our new additions to the ICSS family
better :) :
**1. Freshers’ Walkabout: 1st Oct 2011 (Sat)**
This would be a quick walkabout around each Hall, conducted by
ex-Hall seniors, right after we have dropped the Freshers off at
their Halls. If you would like to make a good first impression to
our Freshers, this is the best chance for you to **provide tips
and advice** to them for life in and around your ex-Hall. Who
knows, if you are missing that kick-ass Foosball table or the
feeling of huddling together in the cosy little Hall kitchen next
time, they would be your key (literally) to the end of your
terrible longing. Also, come down with your hallmates and
reminisce those great times you have had with them as a Fresher.
Drop **Shun Ying** an email at secretary(a)ic-singsoc.net, if you
are interested to join us for the walkabout.
To all Freshers: if you have yet to register your hall
information, please do so here
<https://docs.google.com/a/ic-singsoc.net/spreadsheet/viewform?pli=1&hl=en_U…>
so that we could contact you for the walkabout as soon as
possible.

**3. Freshers’ Hyde Park Picnic: 15th Oct 2011 (Sat)**
Mark down your 2nd Saturday in London on your calendar, as you
would be participating in one of the largest-scale societal-wide
event on 15th Oct! Held in Imperial’s very own backyard, Hyde
Park, Freshers’ Picnic would be a great chance for Seniors and
Freshers to meet in a relaxed environment over a lovely picnic on
the grassy patches – London style. Sports events in the picnic
will also allow you to showcase your sporting skills in
**football, Frisbee, touch rugby** and more. Don’t miss out on
the opportunity to lay back and relax with fellow Imperial
Singaporeans before kiasu-ism kicks in (and turn everyone into
full-time-stay-home-muggers) for the school term!

2. Warwick Summer Games - Thank you everyone!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Here's a message from our Sports Officer, Yuxiang, on behalf of
the Exco:
Hello everybody,
This is your very proud Sports Officer, writing for the first
time since WSG.
Last Saturday (3 Sep) was an extremely exciting and fruitful day
for ICSS despite the gloomy outlook initially. Our Team
Imperial's recruitment process faced a tough start this summer.
The Exco registered for only 5 teams (1 for each sport) for WSG,
and had difficulties even filling them up. But support from
Freshers grew over time, especially after Sojourn! Special thanks
to the enthusiastic ones who came to me volunteering to form full
teams on their own! We eventually fielded 7 teams, forming the
**largest contingent** this year.
I'm extremely honoured to say that despite our not-so-optimistic
start, our teams brought us many pleasant surprises this WSG:
**Floorball Team A** emerged as ***Champions*** after a close
battle with arch-rivals LSE; **Football Team A** and the
**Basketball team** reached the finals and clinched the
***Runners-up positions***; our mainly-beginners **Netball team**
also displayed extraordinary skills and perseverance as they
fought more experienced teams to emerge as ***2nd runner-up***.
Deserving equal emphasis and respect, our Football Team B, and
mostly-beginners Floorball Team B and Touch Rugby team put up
great fights and treated the audiences to equally exciting
matches, though they lost their critical matches by a mere couple
of points.

(Our Netball girls clinching 2nd runner-up in the Warwick Summer
Games)
Although we missed the "Overall Champion School" title by just a
few points, I'm proud to say that this is probably some of the
best performances of Team Imperial in the recent years! As I
congratulate the players for their fantastic play, I also wish to
applaud the non-competitors who lent us our support by being
there to cheer for us. The home-ground-like atmosphere would
certainly be different if your cheers were not present!
Finally, I definitely would like to witness these remarkable
display of passion, perseverance and unity in future ICSS events,
particularly in the upcoming Lavish and Nottingham Games! :)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
3. Freshers' Pick-up and Hall walkabout (1 Oct 2011)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Freshers,
Within these few days, most of you (who have chosen to stay in
halls) should have received your email from the Accommodation
Office regarding your Hall allocations. If you have gotten into
somewhere you really wanted to - congratulations! If not – do
not worry too much too and always keep an open mind, as you will
certainly adapt into wherever you end up staying!
As mentioned during our Pre-departure talk, we are offering a
pick-up coach service exclusively for all ICSS Freshers.
This pick-up service would take you from London Heathrow Airport
**directly to the doorsteps of your hall**, with maximum comfort
and minimal hassle. The service is estimated to cost about
**10-15 pounds**, which is definitely much cheaper than a London
Black Cab (~40 pounds) and saves you the trouble of transiting
around on the London Tube. The service is mainly catered for
people arriving on **SQ322**, reaching **London Heathrow Airport
Terminal 3** at **0555h on 1 Oct 2011** (London time). There
should be other flights arriving around this time too (e.g.
BA0012, BA0016), so if your flight arrives before 0555h, feel
free to indicate your interest for this pick up as well! Fill up
the form with your details at http://bit.ly/fresherspickupform.
*Take note that the pick-up service would be on
**first-come-first-serve** basis, so fill up the form as soon as
possible to secure a seat on the coach!*
For those who are **reaching London either earlier or have booked
a flight some other time**, do also fill up the form with your
**hall information** so as to facilitate the organization of
activities for Freshers in the coming academic year. If you would
also fill in your flight information, I could help you check if
there might be seniors on the same flight who can help you get to
your hall.
Feel free to drop me an email at secretary(a)ic-singsoc.net if you
have any more queries regarding the Freshers' pick-up! :)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
**To all ex-Hall seniors:** If you are interested to help out in
bringing around our Freshers' on the hall walkabout on 1 Oct,
kindly drop Shun Ying an email at secretary(a)ic-singsoc.net by 16
Sept with your name, UK contact no and your previous hall. We
would get back to you again shortly with more details regarding
the walkabout! Thank you :)
-----------------------------------------------------------------

3. Thank you Incredibles!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Incredibles,
All of us in the Exco would like to say that we’re very
grateful for all the help that each and every one of you have
rendered during the pre-Sojourn and Sojourn period of time! This
camp could never have taken off without all your hard work. We
have so much to say to you people because we can never thank you
enough.
To sum it all up, recall the story of the three stonecutters and
relate Sojourn to the idea of building a Cathedral. At the end of
the day, with the help from all of you Incredibles, together with
our common goal, beliefs, mutual support and sweat (exceptional
amount of it especially in this sunny weather), we have
successfully constructed a Cathedral. Most importantly, we are
building a family whose members would all reap from the shade of
this Cathedral, and built up the groundwork to forge bonds that
could last long after our Imperial school life.
In addition, to all the freshers who are reading our weekly
newsletter Kaya and Toast for the first time, we would like to
say a big thank you to all of you for being such an enthusiastic
bunch during Sojourn 2011. You have successfully gone through the
initiation ceremony of the Imperial College Singapore Society
(aka Sojourn) and are officially a part of our big family.
Welcome to our Imperial Singaporean family! :)
Brothers and sisters, do look forward to more exciting adventures
and events with us that will bring our ICSS family closer
together this coming academic year!

5. LSE London Freshers' Ball - Enigma
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Fine young uns,
I am Leonard Severn-Eugene, 23rd Earl of Tottenham, 2nd Baron of
Southwark and the first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. It has come
to my attention that a group of young students are planning to
come to my county in the fine month of October, to embark on a
great adventure far away from their homes.
I would therefore invite you to my mansion on the night of
**October Fourth**, when I will be hosting my **grand masquerade
ball, Enigma**. The ball will start at **seven and a half strokes
past midday** and the after-ball party starts on the stroke of
midnight. I have prepared the finest cuisine from around the
world, and have engaged a world renowned connoisseur of music to
set the mood for the night. Let it be known, however, that as
Earl of Tottenham and Baron of Southwark, I would only allow the
finest ladies and gentlemen to set foot on my territory. You will
be required to be in your finest garments and the most exquisite
mask to obscuire your identity, and if you fail to impress, I
shall be none so pleased.
I look foward to having your company at my ball.
Yours,
Leonard Severn-Eugene (L.S.E.)

3. ICSS Sports - Touch Rugby Session (13 Aug 2011)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Here's a message from our **Sports rep, Jin Yi**:
When was the last time you had a game of touch rugby or have
always wanted to put on your limited edition T90 soccer boots but
never got the chance to?
Well, this short 2 hours touch rugby session is organized just
for you!
**Date: 13th August, Saturday
Time: 1000 - 1200 h
Venue: West Coast Park**
*ALL NEW OR EXPERIENCED* touch rugby players are welcomed to join
us in this event, where you will get a feel of the game, get
together with your friends in Singapore or even have a quick
workout session after a long week of work or internships.
For those people new to the game, touch rugby was originally
'derived from rugby football in which players do not tackle in
the traditional, highly physical way, but instead touch their
opponents using their hands on any part of the body, clothing, or
the ball.' -wikipedia.
So don't worry too much about the physical aspect of the sport as
you won't be leaving the field with a broken nose but instead
with a smile on your face. (Just look at how much fun these kids
are having!)
