1. President's Message on ICSS Membership
-----------------------------------------------------------------
**If you have already purchased ICSS membership, you may wish to
skip the following message. **
Dear all,
I will like to bring your attention to the purchasing of our
Society membership. If you do not already know, our Society
membership comes at a mere cost of £5. As a member, you will be
entitled to many benefits and privileges. Just to give you a
flavour of some of the benefits:
* Entitlement to Members-only events (eg. Imperial Ski Trip)
* Priority in registration for events over non-members
* Subsidies for events (eg. Chinese New Year dinner, Bicester
Trip)
* Discount card to many popular restaurants and cafes
* Opportunity to vote and have a say at OGMs and AGMs
* And much more!
Hence, the sooner you sign up for membership, the faster you
will gain access to all these lovely benefits, all at a very
small cost!
If the above reason isn’t compelling enough for you, as a
paying member for the Society membership, you will be assisting
the entire Society in fulfilling a membership count quota
required by the Union. Once our numbers are met, we will be
awarded grants, bolstering the finances of the Society. This will
then lead to events becoming cheaper and better! Much effort has
been placed into every single event we organize. Being crippled
by finances will mean all the effort will go to waste. So do help
us to help you!
Signing up only requires a Debit/Credit card under your name,
and a few minutes of your time. Instructions are:
1. Go to http://www.imperialcollegeunion.org.
2. Go under 'Clubs & Societies' and find 'Singapore' under A-Z
clubs & societies list.
3. Click "Shop" on the tab at the left hand side.
4. Buy the membership for 5 pounds and we'll take care of the
rest!
To all those who have already signed up for membership, I will
like to say a big thank you! I warmly welcome you as a member of
the Imperial College Singapore Society. To the rest, please do
not deliberate any further and get your membership today!
Yours truly,
Wenjun

one of these exciting roles for the production, please email the

3. Let the ICSS Fiesta begin! (18 - 31 Oct 2010)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The long-awaited ICSS Fiesta now begins and will end on 31 Oct
2010!
Come together as current/ex- members of your halls to prepare a
feast to kick off the Autumn term. But before you devour all the
scrumptious dishes you have prepared, be sure to take the
whackiest photos of the food / your group with the food / your
group preparing the food and **submit them for our ICSS Fiesta
Food Photography competition!**
This event is very special and we will be subsidising a part of
your food expenses, so your participation in the Photography
competition is essential or we will not be able to process your
subsidies. Hence, submit legitimate photos for the various
categories to our dear Liaison Officer,
liaisonsofficer(a)ic-singsoc.net. The prizes for the ICSS Fiesta
will be given out during our Ordinary General Meeting on 3 Nov
2010.
We wish you ALL THE BEST! :)
Seniors who require contact information with the Freshers who
have just shifted into your ex-hall can still email Yu Leng at
secretary(a)ic-singsoc.net for it.
* **Fiesta period**: 18 to 31 October 2010
* **Deadline for competition**: 31 October 2010
* **Competition Categories:** Whackiest Photo, Best Caption,
Most Halloweenish
* **Subsidies (*):** 5-10 people - 5 pounds, 10-20 people - 10
pounds, 20 and above - 20 pounds
(*) The subsidy is a lump sum not a *per pax* subsidy. The
subsidy will also depend on the headcount of the number of people
in the photos submitted for the competition.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
4. Ordinary General Meeting (3 Nov 2010)

5. ICSS Bicester Village Trip (6 Nov 2010)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Hello SingSoc Members!
Start saving your money because the ICSS Bicester Village
<http://www.bicestervillage.com/en_GB/> shopping trip is here!
These are the finalized details so far:
When: 6th November 2010 (Saturday)
Cost: £10 (Members)*, £12 (Non-Members)
Seats Available: 49
Please do note that your seat will be confirmed on a first come
first serve basis! Also, ICSS members get priority over the seats
so if you’re not an ICSS member yet, do sign up for membership
on the Union Website to get a priority place on the coach! Here
is how you can register:
1) ICSS members can start to register from now by e-mailing
icss.events(a)gmail.com?subject=ICSS%20Bicester%20Village%20Trip.
Only ICSS members can book a place on the coach from now until
30th October. However, if you’re an ICSS member and you would
like to bring along a friend who’s not from Imperial, you are
allowed to book one extra seat for a friend. However, that friend
has to pay the non-member price of £12.
2) After 30th October, registration will be open to non-members,
so if there happens to be any seats left on the coach, anyone can
email to the address above to book your seats. If the coach is
already full, I will put you on the reserve list and should
anyone back out, you might be able to go on this shopping trip!
If you have any questions, please feel free to direct them to me
at icss.events(a)gmail.com and I will be happy to assist!
*The £10 cost that ICSS members pay is to cover the cost price
of hiring the coach.
Cheers,
Sid

11. Message from the UKSSC regarding the UKSSC AGM
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Fellow student leaders and friends,
I hope everyone is settling well for a new school year. I write
regarding the subject, which my committee members and I have been
receiving quite a fair bit of questions on. We had initially
decided to launch our official website (which would contain the
relevant information) on 16 Oct, but I thought it might be better
to address the common questions personally first.
This informational email is, unfortunately, rather lengthy, so
please bear with me.
***1) Write-up of The UKSSC***
Attached is a write-up of The UKSSC
<http://files.groupspaces.com/icss/files/32598/Write-up+of+The+UKSSC.pdf>.
I hope you will find it most useful as to the what and how of the
dealings of The UKSSC.
***2) The UKSSC Constitution***
The second attached document is the Constitution of The UKSSC
<http://files.groupspaces.com/icss/files/32599/The+UKSSC+Constitution.pdf>,
which I had promised to deliver during my election speech last
year. It contains 29 Articles of Association and the Election
By-Laws. Most relevant to the AGM would be Articles 5, 6, 17, 18
and the Election By-Laws. Please do take the time to read through
them because they will tell you everything you need to know about
the upcoming elections. Detailed descriptions of the the job
scope of each office is provided.
Though all the important details can be found in the
Constitution, I have highlighted the more relevant ones in the
topics below, for your reading pleasure.
***3) Ratification of the Constitution***
In order to imbue in the Constitution the authority to govern
The UKSSC, we would like to ratify the document formally during
the AGM. The process will be as such - the title of each Article
will be read out, and you, representing your Partner Society,
will be asked to demonstrate your agreement with the terms of the
Article by way of raising your hand. Once we have repeated the
process for all 29 Articles and the Election By-Laws, I will
officially proclaim the Constitution ratified, and would request
all of you to sign, on behalf of your society, on the
Constitution. This will be the official hardcopy original of The
UKSSC Constitution.
The ratification of our Constitution is a monumental moment for
The UKSSC. Thus, to make it a meaningful event, please take your
time to browse through the full Constitution, and should you have
any objections to the terms, do contact me.
***4) Eligibility of candidates***
All Singaporean tertiary students are eligible to run for
office. However, certain positions, like that of President and
the Vice Presidents, require candidates to be, at most, in their
penultimate year of study. Similarly, certain offices require
candidates to reside in the relevant regions ie. Vice President
(The South & Greater London) need necessarily be a person who
resides in the region of either The South or Greater London, as
classified accordingly by The UKSSC.
Candidates are required to be physically present at the AGM.
No subsidy in transport costs will be provided for candidates.
***5) Important dates to note***
30 Oct - Registration for candidacy opens
6 Nov - Sending of confirmation of attendance, with all the
details of your transport booking as listed above
13 Nov - Candidates to register with The UKSSC their candidacy
(with completed registration form and manifesto)
20 Nov - The UKSSC AGM and Elections at the Singapore High
Commission in London (11am to 5pm - lunch is provided)
20/21 Nov - Handing Over Session*
Candidates are required to commit 20 and 21 Nov (until late
noon) for a series of handing over sessions.

Yours sincerely,
Ng Shiyang
President
The UKSSC

4. ICSS Major Event 2011 - The search for Directors and Scriptwriters
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Dear all,
The search for Directors and Scriptwriters for ICSS Major Event
2011 continues.
Major Event serves the purpose of bringing Imperial Singaporeans
from different years, courses, halls and OGs together and it is
the biggest and most rewarding event for our Singsoc members
every year.
Last year, ICSS did a musical which was well-received by our
audience and was also a highly fulfilling experience for the
participants. For 2011, we will once again be doing a musical for
Major Event. This musical will be anchored by the Freshers, and
we hope to see the various roles (from directors and
scriptwriters to actors and backstage crew) taken up
enthusiastically by our Freshers.
While the event will be held in March, we are now beginning to
ask for helpers for all roles, especially directors and
scriptwriters who will generate the script and set the stage
right. Assistance and guidance will be provided by your lovely
seniors.
To those who are interested in joining in the Major Event 2011,
especially as directors and scriptwriters, please contact your
dear Events Officer - Shuren or Sid - at
eventsofficer(a)ic-singsoc.net?subject=ICSS%20Major%20Event%202011
for more information.
Seniors who are keen on offering your expertise in the various
fields are also more than welcome to join in. Do contact Shuren
and Sid to express your interest as well.
Thanks!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
5. ICSS Fiesta! - Starting next week
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The much publicised inaugural ICSS Fiesta begins **next week**!
All seniors are invited to return to their 1st year Halls to
join the new freshers in preparing a feast to kick off the term.
The best part is, the ICSS is *subsidizing your feast*!
To make things a little more exciting, we will be running an
ICSS Fiesta Food Photography competition! Before you devour all
the scrumptious dishes you have prepared, take the whackiest
photos of the food / your group with the food / your group
preparing the food. Let your creative juices flow alongside the
delicious juices and stand a chance to win delicious Singaporean
commodities which will definitely come in useful in the victory
feast. :-)
***Start now*** and organize your fellow hallmates to get
together either with your senior batch (if you know them,
freshers) or with your junior batch (for seniors) to decide on
WHEN / WHAT / HOW you are going to win this competition! Seniors
require contact information with the Freshers who have just
shifted into your ex-hall can email Yu Leng at
secretary(a)ic-singsoc.net.

This year, Singaporeans from all over London will be down in OUR

in close proximity to each other and so, feel free to “picnic
hop” and check out the people from other Unis. There is even
going to be interschool 'friendlies' so we need you there to
represent ICSS! The various JC UK alumnis will be down as well so
do drop by at their booths to find out more about them and their
activities.
A simple, hearty breakfast prepared by your EXCO will be
provided too!

* **Fiesta period**: 18th to 31st October 2010
* **Deadline for competition**: 31st October 2010

3. ICSS Major Event 2011 - The search for Directors and Scriptwriters
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Freshers,
Welcome to Imperial College London! While you guys are busy
settling down and attending the countless Freshers' Week events,
let me just give you guys a short introduction about Major Event
2011: the biggest event for Singapore Society.
Major Event is the event that SingSoc holds every year to wrap
off the academic year. It is the event that has the highest
number of participants across all years. Thus, Major Event serves
to facilitate interaction and bonding between Singaporeans across
all levels.
This year, we will be doing a musical for Major Event. More
importantly, this musical will be anchored by you guys. From
directors and scriptwriters to actors and backstage crew, every
role in the musical will be filled by you guys.
I was part of the cast in last year’s musical. Speaking from
experience, I can say that Major Event was a fulfilling and
enriching event. We had many rehearsals, numerous late nights. We
shed tears and sweat for the event. At the end of the day, we
feel that the effort put in was worthwhile, looking at the
friends that we have made and the sense of achievement.
ICSS Major Event 2011 will be held in March. However, we will
need to start early to source for helpers for all roles,
especially directors and scriptwriters who will generate the
script and set the stage right. Of course, we will be there to
assist you guys.
To those who are interested in joining in the Major Event 2011,
especially as directors and scriptwriters, please contact your
dear Events Officer - me or Sid - at
eventsofficer(a)ic-singsoc.net?subject=ICSS%20Major%20Event%202011
and we will give you more information.
Thanks!
Shuren

5. Freshers' Picnic (16 Oct 2010)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Calling everyone in ICSS! The freshers' picnic is back! What
better way to spend a Saturday morning than in Hyde Park,
chilling with your friends over a picnic and playing some sports.
It will be plenty of fun and a unique experience to be together
in everyone’s favourite park.
Though it may be called freshers' picnic, seniors are NEEDED as
well! Come on down and impress them with your wealth of
experiences in the ways of being a Singaporean in London. For the
sports enthusiasts, there is no better time to spot sporting
talents amongst our able-bodied freshers. Either way, do come and
give our freshers a warm welcome to London!
ALSO, this year, Singaporeans from all over London will be down
in OUR park as well to have their picnics from 10 am onwards! We
should be in close proximity to each other and so, feel free to
“picnic hop” and check out the people from other Unis. If all
goes well, we might even see some interschool friendly matches so
we need you there to REPRESENT US! The various JC UK alumnis will
be down as well so do drop by at their booths to find out more
about them and their activities.
Breakfast will be provided!! =)

6. ICSS Fiesta!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Start the new academic year with a bang this autumn by cooking up
a storm! We are inviting all seniors to return to their 1st year
Halls to join the new freshers in preparing a feast to kick off
the term. The best part is, the ICSS is *subsidizing your feast*!
The ICSS Fiesta will be a series of cooking competitions which
will be running through the entire academic year.
To make things a little more exciting, we will be running an
ICSS Fiesta Food Photography competition! Before you devour all
the scrumptious dishes you have prepared, take the whackiest
photos of the food / your group with the food / your group
preparing the food. Let your creative juices flow alongside the
delicious juices and stand a chance to win delicious Singaporean
commodities which will definitely come in useful in the victory
feast. :-)
***So what do you need to do NOW?*** Simple! Just organize your
fellow hallmates and get together either with your senior batch
(if you know them, freshers) or with your junior batch (for
seniors) to decide on WHEN / WHAT / HOW you are going to win this
competition! Seniors require contact information with the
Freshers who have just shifted into your ex-hall can email Yu
Leng at secretary(a)ic-singsoc.net.
* **Fiesta period**: 18th to 31st October 2010
* **Deadline for competition**: 31st October 2010

1. President's Note
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Singaporeans,
The start of autumn term 2010 is merely a week away and I am
sure everyone is eagerly looking forward to the start of the new
academic year. I hope that the summer break has been a meaningful
and enjoyable one for everyone.
The night of 9th September saw the conclusion of Allure, the
finale of our medley of summer events. For all of you who were
there to join us for UKBound, I hope that the night was as
enjoyable for you as it was for the committee organizing the
event. Let me take this opportunity to congratulate Ms Amanda
Chin and Mr Jason Cheng for the excellent show they put up in
representing Imperial College Singapore Society at the pageant,
and a job well done to Jason for bringing home title of Mr
Congeniality.
At the same time, I would too like to congratulate the sportsmen
and sportwomen of ICSS who fought hard to bring glory to the
society. The results for the five sports are:
Touch Rugby - 1st
Football - 2nd
Floorball - 3rd
Netball - 5th
Basketball - 5th
Overall - 3rd (out of 9 represented universities)
A big thank you also goes out to all the seniors who took time
off to help out with the pre-departure briefing at Raffles City
as well as Sojourn 2010 at Sentosa. I am sure many of you
thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity of getting to know our
freshers.
It is the time of the year again to herald in the new batch of
freshers. As seniors of the society, we have all been through
this phase filled with excitement and uncertainty. Let us come
together as a society and warmly welcome the freshers to our
family over in London. I hope that every senior will be generous
and forthcoming in lending a helping hand to the freshers and get
them settled into the new environment as quickly as possible.
This has always been a tradition of the ICSS and let us proudly
hand this down to our juniors.
The new academic year also signifies the start of the chain of
events the ICSS will be hosting in London. The month of October
will be a jam-packed one from beginning to end, starting from
Fresher’s Pick-up and Walkabout on the first weekend. In the
second weekend, OGLs will once again be called into action for
Fresher’s Tour. This will then be followed by Fresher’s
Picnic on the third weekend, where we will be looking to host a
number of friendly sports matches against our neighbours in
London. Capping off the activities in October will be the new
ICSS Fiesta! Read on in this prelude to Autumn of Kaya and Toast
to find out more about all the exciting activities this October.
I wish all of you a great start to the upcoming academic year.
On behalf of the ICSS executive committee, I look forward to
meeting all of you over in London.
Wenjun

2. Activities for Freshers
-----------------------------------------------------------------
As work begins to set in with the start of the academic term,
don't forget to take breaks to keep the stress levels low and the
happy index high. Why not join us in making the Freshers part of
our ICSS family? We have the following activities planned up
specially for Freshers and we hope to see you there too in the
fun! So mark these dates on your calendar now.. :)
*1. Freshers' Pick-up (2 Oct 2010, 8 am)*
Once again this year, we will be picking up the Freshers' from
the airport and sending them to their halls! If you are taking
the flight SQ 322 that lands at 05:55h on 2 Oct (or any other
flight that suits the pick-up time), we welcome you to join us on
our Freshers' shuttle bus. There will be a trailer together with
the bus to ensure sufficient space for lugggages. Do note the
following -- (1) the bus will leave Heathrow at 8 am, (2) we
will be receiving the Freshers' outside the Departure Hall and
(3) the bus will be going to the main areas of Wilson House,
Evelyn Gardens and Princes Gardens. If interested, please contact
me at secretary(a)ic-singsoc.net?subject=Freshers'%20Pick-up%20 by
27 Sept 2010.
*2. Freshers' Walkabout (2 Oct 2010, 12-4 pm)*
A short and sweet walkabout to familiarize our Freshers with
their surrounding neighbourhood. Be that senior to share your
wealth of knowledge about living in London with the Freshers and
I'm sure they will appreciate it greatly.
*3. Tour London (9 Oct 2010)*
Take this opportunity to discover about the latest batch of
Freshers as each OG goes on thier own exciting journey of
exploration around London. The suggested route includes places
like Westminster Bridge, Buckingham Palace, the London Eye.. as
well as 'attractions' like Oxford and Regent Street!
*4. Freshers' Picnic (16 Oct 2010)*
Get your picnic mats ready and sport attire as ICSS sets off to
Hyde Park for our annual Freshers' Picnic. This year's will come
with a twist - more information will be provided in the next
issue of Kaya and Toast! Watch out!

morning (i.e. just in time for boxing day sales!)
* **Place**: Likely to be Flaine Altair (newly renovated +
very beginner friendly)

beginner
What’s included in the price?

If you are interested, please email vicepresident(a)ic-singsoc.net
by 27th September, stating your name and whether or not you
prefer the beginner/intermediate course. We need to know what the
response is like to facilitate the planning (and bargaining)!
Though this does not count as the final confirmation, places at
the resort are limited and it will help a lot to express interest
early!

4. ICSS Fiesta (Halls)
Let your creative juices flow alongside the
delicious juices and stand a chance to win delicious Singaporean
commodities which will definitely come in useful in the victory
feast. :-)
* **Fiesta period**: 18th to 31st October 2010
* **Deadline for competition**: 31st October 2010
If you should have any queries, please feel free to post them to
any executive committee member or simply send an email to
secretary(a)ic-singsoc.net.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
5. A message from our Sports Officer..
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,
Calling for all sport enthusiasts! ICSS will be having numerous
sports events in London. There will be regular badminton, tennis,
floorball, football and touch rugby sessions throughout the year.
Therefore, **please bring your rackets, shoes and sport
equipments**!!
Nottingham Games, the biggest sports event amongst the Singapore
societies in UK, will be held on 13 November 2010. We will be
travelling down to Nottingham as a society to compete with other
colleges’ Singapore Societies for honour and glory. However,
having fun and getting together is always the main aim for any
ICSS’s event. There will be sports from football, badminton to
games like amazing race. More details will be confirmed.
See all of you in London!
Thanks,
Hong Yi
