Tomorrow 11am - Special meeting of Physics Computing Committee

Dear All, A few people have asked for a special meeting of the Physics Departmental Computing Committee to discuss the ICT reforms. Also I believe that there is a FoNS HoDs meeting first thing on Tuesday and so if we are to give any feedback to this grouping we need to put it together tomorrow. Some points: 1. Whatever our personal feeling are about friends potentially loosing their jobs in ICT (and I suspect that I have more friends in ICT than most of you) this is not the business of this committee. The sole business of this committee is how this will effect physics - our teaching and our research (and our admin). 2. There are significant members of our committee who are in ICT. These people may well be conflicted and so I am happy for them not to come/to attend but only listen/participate fully as they feel comfortable. 3. I suspect that this will be a small meeting as most people will not have an opinion, but I want it to be as open as possible so feel free to invite other people who have opinions (both in favour and against). I have invited Paul French as Vice Dean for Research who will be joining us half way through and Matt Harvey who many of you know as head of ICT HPC and Research Computing efforts. Please invite anybody you see fit. 4. Please try to let me know if you and/or others plan to join (or not join) so that we can start in a non-ragid way. Finally, for reasons not worth going into here I cannot schedule teams meetings so unless somebody volunteers to set up a teams meeting for this I will use my CERN account toi schedule a zoom meeting first thing in the morning. As communicated back in February, we are still working to reduce the overall data storage footprint on the Box service in order to avoid a significant increase renewal costs (circa £1.5m). We are looking to reduce the storage by around 600Tb by the end of July. Our approach will be to contact the users with the highest storage levels on the service and we will work with them to move the data to the Research data store, providing as much support as possible in the actual move across and administratively. I’ve attached the paper circulated back in March for context (the totals have already started to come down) but if you have any more questions specifically, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Some of the items that have occurred to me are: - News and plans from ICT - Software stack for the teaching machines - Web pages (out of date and only in the staff information) - what would we like - The responses to the survey were interesting[1] but I still think that a round table where people say what their group does (in computing terms) and what is important to them would be useful. Computing Committee , survey and meeting

Dear All, Thank you for agreeing to be part of the newly reformed Physics Departmental Computing Committee. I hope that this will be very useful group over the next few years. I think that we need to get an idea of what our computing needs are now and in the immediate future. I have set up a google form to try to gather this information. It is far from perfect and will not fit any individual group perfectly but please do your best to work with this imperfect construction. I will try to turn the returns into a living document. Urgent Feedback needed (by 1pm today)

Dear All, This afternoon, I am giving evidence to the HPC review that college is performing. The terms of reference are attached. I had misunderstood this process until reading these which only arrived while I was (mostly) on holiday last week. The terms of reference are quite short and clear. If you would like to have input then please send me comments by ~1pm so that I can absorb them in time for the meeting. My apologies for the very late notice, as I said, I was on holiday last week.
