Dear all, Leica has a new imaging technology called Thunder: https://www.leica-microsystems.com/products/thunder-imaging-systems/ This is a widefield microscope capable of real-time deconvolution during image acquisition. They are keen to test this on real samples, and are willing to bring in a system on the 5th and 6th of March for a demo. Please contact me if you have suitable samples to be tested, this could be cells or tissue sections etc. to be imaged in 3D, see the website for inspiration. The Thunder technology should remove the out of focus blur as we do currently with the Huygens software, but you would see it directly when acquiring the images. FOM is a great microscopy conference and it is in London this year!!! Announcing FOM2019: FOCUS ON MICROSCOPY 2019 London, April 14-17, 2019 incorporating: 31st International Conference on Confocal Microscopy 32nd International Conference on 3D Image Processing in Microscopy Dear Colleagues, Tuesday, January 22, 2019: deadline abstract submission for FOM2019. The London conference is nearing. Please submit your abstract by this date. Abstracts for oral and poster presentations can be submitted through the conference website: http://www.FocusOnMicroscopy.org where also hotel information is available. Due to technical problems the opening of the registration on the webite has been delayed but we expect it to be available by mid January. Note: abstracts can be submitted without previous registration. After the successful FOM2018 conference held in Singapore last year, it is a pleasure to announce FOM2019: the next in a series of unique interdisciplinary meetings on advanced and multi-dimensional light microscopy and image processing. I thank you in advance for your help and wish you a very happy and fruitful year 2019 Best wishes Daniel Choquet Available post-doctoral position in synaptic plasticity funded by ERC We are seeking to recruit post-doctoral fellows expert in slice electrophysiology and imaging to study innovative aspects of synaptic plasticity. We have developed unique tools to monitor and modify AMPA receptor trafficking in vivo and would like now to apply them to study synaptic function with electrophysiological, molecular and imaging approaches. These approaches will be combined with behavioral assessment of memory function to understand the link between synaptic plasticity and memory storage, consolidation and retrieval. We have developed innovative tools to control with light the accumulation or disappearance of AMPAR from synapses during LTP and LTD. In this project, we will use these optogenetic tools to analyze the role of synaptic plasticity in information processing by the brain. Altogether, this project will shine new light on the molecular mechanism of synaptic plasticity and will be linked to behavioral studies of cognitive functions using the same tools. The position will be financed by an ERC grant from D. Choquet for up to five years. For this position, we are seeking highly motivated individuals, with a proven track record of success, if possible immediately after their PhD, and in any case no more than four years after their PhD. The projects will be conducted in a stimulating and highly interdisciplinary and international environment in a newly established research building, a part of the Bordeaux neurocampus project (Bordeaux, France). Dear FILM-users, We had to make a few changes to our usage regulations, you will be presented to the new documents when you log into PPMS, the main changes to the regulations are: In order to prevent Masters and BSc students to book microscopes outside 07:00 - 19:00 , we had to change the peak hours, which are now from 07:00 - 19:00. An update on the lone working policy is also included. Due to high demand on the confocal microscopes, we have to restrict the maximum hours which can be booked per day: Widefield microscopes: Booking during peak hours (7-19h) is restricted to a maximum of 12h/day; there is a weekly booking limit of 16h during peak time per user, so as to allow others to gain access to the instrument. The booking restriction is lifted if the microscope is not booked 24h beforehand. Confocal microscopes: Booking during peak hours (7-19h) is restricted to a maximum of 6h/day; there is a weekly booking limit of 12h during peak time per user, so as to allow others to gain access to the instrument. The booking restriction is lifted if the microscope is not booked 24h beforehand. Please contact facility staff if you need to book for longer times. I also updated the health & safety document with the lone working regulations. If any staff in your areas require access to carry out work during the College Christmas closure please ensure that they complete an application and send it to me by Friday the 14th of December at the latest. This is to ensure there is time for Prof Chilvers to sign the applications and for them to be processed by Security. Please remember to clearly indicate in the application why this work must happen during a College closure period. Applications will not be approved for emergency access only. In the case of emergencies e.g. freezer failures, Security should be contacted on 020 7589 1000 and they will be able to let you into College buildings. Is someone able to help Robyn? Please contact them directly: I have transfected suspension HEK cells with a positive control plasmid containing the LacZ reporter gene. I wondered if you knew of any resources available to stain the cells with X-gal or anyone performing beta-galactosidase assays that may be willing for me to try it out on my small number of samples prior to investing in my own reagents? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
