FYI: Dear all, We currently have a vacancy for a super-resolution microscopist to work at the Octopus facility in the Research Complex at Harwell: This is an open-ended "link scientist" role within the CLF's Octopus facility, which develops and operates advanced optical microscopes for the academic and industrial user community. The facility offers state-of-the-art techniques including super-resolution methods (e.g. STED, STORM), single-molecule localization and tracking, FLIM/PLIM, light-sheet microscopy, and optical trapping. Developments ongoing or planned include super-resolution microscopy under cryogenic conditions, 3D 4Pi microscopy, iPALM, and correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM). Octopus scientists are world leaders in advanced optical microscopy instrumentation and techniques, working closely with facility users to ensure the delivery of a high quality collaborative science programme. Main responsibilities are: Supporting facility users with advanced microscopy techniques and data acquisition. You will be supported by the Octopus team who provide assistance in other areas, e.g. sample preparation and data analysis Developing new microscopy techniques and instrumentation, particularly focused on 3D super-resolution microscopy, correlative methods, and complex workflows. Dear All Increasingly we are finding the objectives on the microscopes are being left in a poor condition. The dry objectives are often left contaminated with either Immersion oil or buffers. If you think you may have allowed oil or buffers on to the dry objectives can you please try and wipe it off with the provided lens paper and then please send us a message so the we can check that all is ok. If you are using oil objectives, please do not switch back to the dry objectives until you have either removed your sample and/or cleaned the oil off. Please remember to clean the oil objectives at the end of your session if you have used them. Also please check the stage insert and clean off any oil, buffer or other contaminants that may have been left by you sample. Dear FILM-users, We had the demo of a localization-based super-resolution microscope from Abbelight at King's last year and have been contacting people interested in this afterwards regarding a possible grant application. I just wanted see if there is additional interest which we might have missed. We are still looking for a committed lead-applicant with a matching research interest and can provide help writing the grant. This is about a microscope for single molecule based PALM/STORM super-resolution microscopy. It offers higher laser power, better resolution (20 nm x 20 nm x 35 nm), a larger field of view (compared to our existing Zeiss Elyra system) and better 3D capabilities. Please see the website for details https://www.abbelight.com/solutions/abbelight-instruments/#SAFe360 This instrument will be as demanding in sample preparation as our Elyra system and only works well with specific bright fluorophores, very high labelling density, special buffer conditions and it takes time to figure these out for an individual sample.
