Dear FILM-users, A big thank you to the 70 people (18% of FILM users) who completed our survey back in February 2020! I realized that I never shared the results. I have attached the complete report, but want to highlight some results: 77% of our users rated the training as "extremely good" and 75% rated the facility overall as "extremely good", many thanks for your trust, we will continue to do our best. The question if our microscopes are up to date was answered with 'Definitely yes' by 36% and 'Probably yes' by 50% while 14% did not think so. Light-Sheet microscopy was very high on the list of new techniques and we have addressed this now with the new LS1 microscope at South Kensington and further grant applications for super-resolution microscopy and intra-vital imaging at Hammersmith are submitted. To acquire new microscopes and replace the existing ones, grant applications are very important and we rely on PIs and departments to support these. Many thanks for your contributions! Dear Microscopists, We will keep our microscope charges constant during these challenging times, at least for now. They are calculated according to full economic costing guidelines to recover costs without making a profit. However due to a change in the way we pay for our MP laser maintenance, we can pass on cost savings and reduce the re-charges for MP laser usage from £18 to £10/hour. The staff time, which we would e.g. charge when we do imaging for users, increases from £29 to £37 as the Wellcome funding for David's position ended. FILM will review the re-charges regularly during the year, so there might be future changes and I will keep you informed. [FILM-Users 00959] New Light-Sheet Microscope in FILM

Dear Microscopists, I am excited to announce that we now have a light-sheet microscope in our line-up of instruments in FILM! Our new Leica Stellaris 5 DLS (Digital Light Sheet) microscope and was funded by the BBSRC 19 Alert call, proposal 'A digital light-sheet microscope for the analysis of biological processes under almost natural conditions' thanks to lead applicant Periklis Pantazis from Bioengineering. The microscope is located at South Kensington. This microscope is ideal for volumetric imaging of medium sized samples and does this very gently with minimum phototoxicity. It allows 3D-imaging of e.g. zebrafish or spheroids/organoids over time. Furthermore photo-manipulation by confocal microscopy is possible using the same instrument. FILM-users, Please note that the College is closed over Easter 01/04 - 06/04 and re-opens on 07/04/2021. There will be no assistance from FILM staff during this time, except in an emergency. The "Access to College Buildings Out of Hours Policy" (attached) applies, so you would need written approval by the Head of Department to access the building. The update will happen from Monday 08/03 and there should be no change for everyone who has used the facility since June 2020 (after the closure). Dear Microscopists, Our microscopes are getting very busy again, but we still have to operate under COVID restrictions. Only one microscope can be used at a time in rooms 409, 527 and 530 (SAF building) and we have 30 minutes gaps between the sessions. This affects bookings on the microscopes at SAF. To mitigate the effect, especially for the widefield microscopes, we are implementing some changes: * The good old CF2 confocal microscope in room 527 was rarely used and has now left the facility to start a new live in a teaching lab, it is not part of the FILM facility anymore. This will bring our costs down and hopefully allow to keep charges at current levels even when FILM income deceases during the pandemic. Recent users have been informed, please contact FILM staff if you need an alternative. * THE WF3 microscope will now move into the free space in room 527, potentially in about 3 weeks' time. We will inform users about the new location when this will happen. The other microscope in this room is not so busy, so that this will allow more usable booking time on both, the WF1 and WF3. * The replacement of the CF3 upright confocal microscope with a used Zeiss LSM 780 system will now be postponed due budget constraints. We currently have only 2 staff (including myself) running the facility, so please be patient if it takes a bit longer for us to respond to your questions or requests.
