Happy New Year to you all! We have a Faculty Computing Meeting next week. Normally, I like to organise a Physics Computing Meeting before the FRCC so that one can feed into the other. However, this may not be practical at such short notice so we may end up having this as a briefing session after the FRCC I have created a doodle poll for our meeting (with two possible dates before the FRCC and others after): https://doodle.com/meeting/participate/id/aOJ73gGe Please can you fill it in by 11am on Monday (just incase Monday is somehow the most popular). At the moment the only items that I have for the agenda are: - Update from ICT/RCS - including new cyber-security committee - I have added Tom Willson in case he is able to come along and would like to comment on this. - Gathering information about zscalar issues (something that I have somewhat neglected since early December) - Discussions of new ToR draft (I will circulate these early next week) - AoB Is there anything else that anybody would like to add to the agenda? VPN removal delayed until spring

Hi All, Some of you have heard this but some have not. The removal of the VPN service has been moved from next week to sometime in the spring. Please disseminate this knowledge widely. I have had people from several departments contacting me with various concerns about the demise of the VPN, especially around access to computer controlled sensitive equipment. Clearly we now have more time to make sure that everything is in a good state when the service is finally removed. Best, david

Meeting on Wednesday

Hi All, (cc'ing Riccardo and Jonathan in case they are interested). At short notice, it is not really surprising that there was no really good day. The only day that seems feasible at all is Wednesday (maybe those who can not make it can send deputies?). I have booked 532 - teams coords to come. As well as the usual update from ICT, the two things that I want us to discuss are: 1. what structure do we want in now that we have moved to communities 2. how we can collaborate more in this area. 1. might lead to a discussion about whether or not we want to write down terms of references. This committee has existed since the dawn of time - well long before I came to Imperial and any terms of reference that we might once have had have been long lost. We are in the process of updating the FRCC ToR and that has been only been going for a few years. Any other items of business are welcome obviously. Best, david

FRCC tomorrow

Dear All, As you know, I usually have our Physics meeting the week before the FoNS FRCC - I have failed to arrange this time as the FRCC is tomorrow. So if you can please send me any concerns that you want addressed or positive suggestions then I can bring these up at the meeting and report back. I then suggest that we meet one lunchtime next week (I will set up a doodle this afternoon). The two "unusual" items on the agenda of the FRCC are: - Communicating computing matters in the different departments. - How might we work more collectively - collaborations (big data, ML etc) and how can we build a coherent view of what we want collectively. Which I think would be valid discussions in our departmental meetings as well - if you have any ideas on these then please let me know. Best, david

Origin License

Dear All, Our origin license is up for renewal. I know that we discussed this at a previous meeting but I am afraid to say that my notes were not good for that meeting. It is my recollection that people were still using Origin and that we should renew. Does this match with other people's recollections? Sorry for my poor note taking. Best, david
