Dear all, Attached is the bible of student radio - Kier and George's guide to presenting! Training Do not be afraid to as for a bit of help on your new shows! The committee and the many experienced radio hosts are willing to sit in on your show; to make sure you are comfortable with the basics and to offer some further tips if you want them. Reply to me and I will arrange for a sit-in. Publicity If you haven't updated your show homepage on the Members area, give it a go. Your description is put in Felix each week. Also, you can make a banner for the website homepage (dimensions 1024x300) or contact me if you want a banner but don't have mad Photoshop skills. Studio sound engineering course is here! :)

Hey all, For those who didn't know, we have a fantastic professional-level recording studio down in the West Basement of Beit Quad, just next to the radio broadcast studio. I'm going to be running a few lessons teaching you the basics of how to record and mix anything from a podcast through to a symphony orchestra, big band or death metal group... There'll likely be a couple sessions this term to allow you to use the studio safely, and some masterclasses teaching good practice and techniques at the end of term or next term. Max

Allo allo, The SRA Awards happened on Thursday night! The IC Radio delegation had a great time; next year the aim is to have some of you nominated. Since 2000 we've had 11 nominations, 4 of which have won awards. TRAINING The training sessions still happen every Wednesday at 12:00. Don't think you are only allowed to come to one! If you feel a bit uncomfortable in the studio, or have any questions on broadcasting your show, come along and Kier will sort you out with some top tips. As ever, reply to myself if you wish for a seasoned pro to sit in on your show. Have a listen to these quality productions, or join the hosts in the studio! If you want yours to be featured you'll need to: (a) *Submit your playlist* so we can tell folks what you played (b) Schedule your next show so people know when to listen to it! Remember that you appear nice and prominently on the radio front page when you submit your playlist so it's a good way to get people listening in. *Training tomorrow at 12:00 *for those who want it, if you're still using your laptop through the mixer I recommend it. Hey all, I'm pleased to announce that our high-quality stream is now running at 192kbps, rather than 128kbps as it's been for the past few years - so now you're recorded, and streaming, in higher quality than ever before! If you experience any problems with this or anything else, please do tell me :) As a result, it's even more important that you take care of the quality of music you're playing during your shows. If you're not playing from CD, *make sure that your files are 320kbps MP3 or higher* (the act of transcoding files reduces the quality, so the difference is definitely audible!) And please, *please try not to use the 'iPod cable', and really try and avoid playing music from your laptops or iPods or phones* or whatever. The cable is there (and deliberately short) just for DJs playing occasional sound effects, or in an emergency if something breaks. We have broadcast-grade CD players, minidisc players, and a fantastic touch-screen panel system, Rivendell, which you can easily upload your own music to, set up entire shows and playlists and jingles to transition automatically on a playlist, or set up panels of jingles and songs you can just press with your finger. It's got a high-quality sound card, and if you upload good-quality files to it, it'll sound amazing (and it'll soon display the 'now playing' song on the website, and log your playlists for you!). And you don't have to use a mouse, or worry about volume on your laptop, or Facebook making a sound, or whatever. If you have any questions about how to set up your own panels and shows on Rivendell, or how to use the CD players and fader-start, Keir ( programming(a)icradio.com) will be more than happy to help. :-) And whatever you do, please don't rip anything from YouTube - you're playing something which has probably been converted from analogue to CD, ripped to MP3, transcoded for YouTube, re-transcoded to another MP3 when you rip it, played through the desk, then re-transcoded to another MP3 to broadcast - understandably, it sounds awful... Hello! Even more new shows started this week; people are learning quickly and the enthusiasm is impressive. Well done! TRAINING To help you on your way, some kind and loving committee members have dedicated one hour of their time to run extra training sessions. These will run into their own shows so you are welcome to sit and watch/join in. George: Show on Monday 14:00. Training on Tuesday 13:00. Eamonn: Monday 18:15-19:00 training followed by his show at 19:00. Ronan: Tuesday 19:00-20:00 training followed by his show at 20:00. Even if you can only stay for a bit or arrive late, it will be worth it. Normal Training on a Wednesday continues, 12:00 outside the West Basement of Beit Quad. BAR NIGHT & SRA AWARDS It's not often the presenters get to mingle with each other, so make sure you pop into the Union on Monday evening for a little banter. FIRST BAR NIGHT and SRA AWARDS!

Hey all, Hope you're all enjoying this year of ICRADIO so far! I've got a couple of social events to tell you about, in order to help everyone get to know each other and feel a bit more involved with the society: Bar Night So, there will be an ICRADIO bar night on Monday 4th November at 6:30pm in the Union Bar. This is hopefully going to become a regular occurrence and will be a great opportunity for radio-ites to meet up and the society as a whole to get to know each other, rather than everybody just doing their own radio show without getting to see the rest of the people involved in the station! Come along, it'll be a laugh! Student Radio Awards So the Student Radio Awards are coming up on Thursday 7th November at indigO2. Unfortunately icradio hasn't been nominated for anything this year, but this event is a great opportunity to meet and party with like minded radio people and consists of the awards ceremony itself as well as an after party. BEWARE: Studio Door Broken

Just to warn everyone: the studio door handle on the inside is broken. Do not shut the door while you're in there, or you will be trapped. I've propped open the door with a fire extinguisher for now and reported it to security. Don't get trapped, Keir
