All, At the recent meeting there were comments about the projection, particularly in relation to LT1. I have spoken to and met with the ICT AV team and they are aware that the image is not as good as some might like. The AV team would like to stress that this is not due to the age of the projector ... The projector is regularly serviced and maintained and is actually in an "as new" condition. The bulb is also running with less than 200 hours of usage recorded as they are regularly changed. Notwithstanding the above there is a perceived and known issue with the image projection and the AV team are keen to assist the Physics department to resolve this if possible. There are a number of potential solutions and the most appropriate one will depend on what funds the department may have and what the actual needs are ... The most expensive option would be to replace the unit and all the internal workings for an HD projection system (but we would advise that there will be little change from £25,000). The problem with moving to HD is that the whole lectern internals and switch gear would need to be replaced. Moving to HD may not actually solve the issue anyway as the HD image would not necessarily be any clearer given the size of the image required and the size of the lecture theatre. A second option may be to replace the projector with a more powerful unit (again there could be some costs involved depending on the overall fitting and requirements). A third option might be to add a second projector to project the image a second time over the top of the first image already being projected - this has the effect of doubling the light intensity and thus making the image brighter. Given that these options are quite diverse, the AV team are proposing that they meet with interested parties to discuss in greater detail the options and requirements and then to hold a "preview" of several options to give those involved an idea of the potential outcomes. I am happy to assist in co-ordinating the meetings and getting the demonstrations set up - please could those who wish to have input declare their interest by 4th May. I have copied Kenny Weir, Associate Head of Department, to this reply as I know that he will have some say in any funding decisions and thought that he should be included at an early stage in the discussions.
