I can confirm the following for you ...

 

 

The fortran Compiler license had expired but we are in the process of renewing - Faculty are picking up the tab for a three year license.

 

Origin is licensed until January 2017 - has been a three year deal.  This will need to be renegotiated with the supplier but should continue as far as I am aware.

This was forwarded to me by a couple of peoplelast week and this. The reason that it is urgentish is because I have been busy doing other things (holiday and conferences) so my apologies.

 

I would like to get a list from this group as quickly as possible (ideally today) and then send that list to the staff lists for any additions, ideally over the weekend.

 

I would like somebody from ICT to correct me but my understanding is that we have site/faulty/departmental licenses for:

Maple

Matlab

Labview

Origin

Intel Compilers

NAG Libraries

(some varient of) SPICE?

(what else)

 

What other things do we need/would benefit from?

In the FOSC meetings, we have discussed the cost of purchasing scientific software licences and the concern has been raised that many staff in different Departments may be purchasing individual licences in parallel for software such as data fitting, image processing, visualisation, graphic design, mathematics etc. Wil Bennet has asked us to provide a list of software packages that we need and we will try to identify those for which we currently purchase  individual licenses that could perhaps be provided more cheaply through consolidated purchase across FoNS or the College. Please could you send me a list of the software that you think is used by more than a few people in your Departments and indicate whether or not you think it is already provided as a site licence for College or Department?

We have or have had site licenses for some of these packages but I am not sure of the current situation.  In some cases site licences are restricted to specific Departments or Faculties. If you can help us generate a list of the software tools that we need to use as a community in our research, we can explore opportunities for further consolidated purchasing of licences. Please highlight any obvious candidates for a site licence where we do not currently have one.
