Community Membership of the Departmental Computing Committee

Dear Community Leaders, I hope that most of you are aware that we have a computing committee in physics that discuss all aspects of computing and how they relate to the Department. These include all aspects of research, teaching, infrastructure etc etc. We are in the process of drawing up ToRs - this committee has existed longer than I have been in college and any existing ToR are long lost to history (and were probably written on punch cards). As part of this we discussed how the new communities should be represented on this committee. In the past we had at least one representative from each research group. I say "at least one" as it is more important to have the right people than to be exclusive. Our initial suggestion was that there should be at least two from each community. Given that the communities have just formed you may not be aware of the members from your community. The current reps are: Light: Mark Neil, Kyle Major Matter: Jenny Nelson, Andy Thomas Particles: David Colling, Dan Whitehouse, Simon Fayer, Ray Beuselink Universe: Andrew Jaffe, Tim Evans Space, plasma, climate: Rich Bantges, Stuart Mangles We also have Ruth Mclauchlan who is the link between the accelerator beams and medicine. There are others with different roles (such as those teaching computing intensive courses etc). Some people are more active than others but overall the group works pretty well. So my questions to you as Community Leaders are: - Do you think that a minimum of two per community is reasonable? - Are you happy with the reps from your community (e.g. would you like to add somebody with particular expertise)? - Any other feedback that you would wish to give? Sorting out unified build issues

Hi Jason, We had a departmental computing meeting today and it appears that there are quite a few people with minor niggles concerining the unified teaching build. One or two of these are urgent and the others less so, however, if we can iron them all out now we wont be in a situatio where we are scrabbling around in September. Also we thought that it would be more productive to have a meeting than to have lots of individual tickets open. So can I ask your availability next week (or the one after)? We can then optimise this with other people's availability. Best, david

Dear All, Following the discussion at the end of today's meeting, the current representatives from the old groups, by community are: Light: Mark Neil, Kyle Major Matter: Jenny Nelson, Andy Thomas Particles: David Colling, Dan Whitehouse, Simon Fayer, Ray Beuselink Universe: Andrew Jaffe, Tim Evans Space, plasma, climate: Rich Bantges, Stuart Mangles We also Ruth Mclauchlan who is the link between the accelerator beams and medicine. Admittedly, some of these people are more active than others. Also we have individuals with roles not connected to a community but who obviously come from those communities. Is it worth contacting the Heads and Research Heads of these communities to see if these are still the right people? Best, david

Tomorrow's meeting

Dear All, We have Blackett 532 booked and I would be grateful if somebody with an outlook account could book a teams slot in the physics computing committee team (Alex Richards - would you be able to do this?). Also Lida, I was not able to find the minutes of the last meeting in that team. There is a folder there but no minutes, which is odd as I am sure that I have seen some minutes. Please could you check? I was especially looking for the actions from the last meeting. It was suggested last time that we add a structure to our meetings, which is not a bad idea. I have seen no extra items for the agenda tomorrow so here it is: Update from ICT ================ - RCS status and plans. - General ICT plans and status. - Cyber security (managed devices etc). - Engagement with National programmes. - Any other ICT related Matters. Teaching ========= - How is the unified build working out? Any issues? Other Matters ============== - ToR for this committee (see attached). Reminder and questions for Computing Meeting on Friday

Dear All, First, I would like to welcome James Owen (taken over from Paul D. for Comp. Physics) and Patrick Dunne (leader of the new ML course), to whom there being a meeting on Friday may well be a surprise. Also, I have also add Jonathan as DHoD for infrastructure as he has expressed interest in our activities (and made useful contributions to a previous meeting). We have a meeting this Friday 12:00 -> 13:00. I have booked Blackett 532 for this meeting and Teams coords will follow for those who will be remote. The questions that I have for you are: - Who from ICT will be available for this meeting? I want to cover quite a few things from different (but overlapping) aspects of ICT. These include an update from the RCS, involvement in national initiatives, update on managed devices, experience with a common teaching build for PCs etc. - (For all) Do people have items for the agenda? We already have quite a lot to discuss but if you have more to add then please send me items and I will group them. There was an action on me to prepare some ToR for this committee. As those of you who go to FoNS computing will know that I am pretty rubbish at producing these but I will produce a draft. Because of the away day tomorrow, I will circulate the agenda and draft ToR on Thursday afternoon. Any comments/questions would be welcome. Best, david

Happy New Year to you all! We have a Faculty Computing Meeting next week. Normally, I like to organise a Physics Computing Meeting before the FRCC so that one can feed into the other.
