Dear All, You will recall that during our Physics Computing Committee meeting on the 14th that there were a significant number of teaching related issue. We decided to have a separate meeting with more people from ICT rather than just poor Ellen on whom lots of actions were landing. Ellen has suggested that the correct people from ICT are Leigh Davenport and Neil Hanham as well as Ellen herself. I have created a doodle poll for all concerned. As we tend to have computing meetings at lunchtime I have stuck to lunchtimes for this meeting. If that is not workable I will broaden but lets try this first. Anybody will be welcome at this meeting but I think that we need at least the 3 people from ICT, Luke, the heads of first and second year computing and anybody who uses computing in their courses. FW: H Drive Migration Follow Up

Dear Physics Dept Computing Reps, If you are interested in being involved in a discussion with ICT surrounding the migration of the H: drive to One Drive, then please see the invitation to the "follow up meeting" below. The initial meeting was held on Teams a couple of weeks ago and provided a background to the proposal. I think there are some very important implications, most notably for the teaching labs, and potentially others that rely on the H: drive. The process is at the stage where there is a good opportunity to provide guidance and influence to the process. If you have any specific questions about the process, timescales, etc. but are unable to attend the meeting, then I would advise that you contact Ingrid directly, or let me know your specific concerns and I will try to convey these on your behalf. Meeting about teaching computing issues

Hi All, This is really an action on Ellen. As she has so many I thought that I would try to help. We agreed that we would have a meeting with the appropriate ICT people to sort out the issues in this area. If Ellen can tell me who they are I will set up a doodle poll for them and people on this list. I am doing outreach all next week and so it may be the week after (although I can probably duck oput for a lunchtime meeting). So Ellen, please can you send a list? Best, david

HI All, Attached is the agenda for tomorrow's meeting (sorry for the late notice). I have included Leigh on this email in case he wants to feed into the first item (which I assume will come from Ellen) - I do appreciate that I hadn't included him earlier so don't expect him to attend (unless he is free and wants to). About half the people said that they wanted to attend remotely therefore I have booked the small HEP meeting room, Blackett 532, which would be rather cosy if everybody was in person but does have reasonable video conferencing. It is a busy agenda so let's keep things moving tomorrow. Best, david

Short notice - physics computing meeting

Dear All, There is a FoNS Research Computing Committee meeting the afternoon a week today. I try to have a Physics Computing Committee meeting the week before so that we can propagate any items up to the FRCC. We traditionally meet at lunchtime so I have set up a doodle poll at: https://doodle.com/meeting/participate/id/bY6WXWKd Please can you fill it in asap so that we can set a date - my apologies for the very short notice - I will try to give more notice next time which will be early October. I will try to book a physical room as well as being virtual - so mixed mode. Please ask the members of your research groups for items that they would like to bring to this group. I have found out that at least one member of the research community, who is a large computing user, didn't know that our committee exists. We really rely on the representatives of the research groups to make these connections. We are quite an informal group and so if a group wants more than one representative then that is fine and some already do. So please send me agenda items. The agenda items that I want to cover (in no particular order at he moment) include: - Usual update from ICT - may be also an update from Leigh on how the service desk is (hopefully) improving. - Teaching machine set up (including support for Linux in a OneDrive only universe) - ICT supported laptops. - Publishing research data - results from the recent survey and what will help physics most. - RSE support from the department. What would be best structure for physics. I have spoken to quite a few of you about this recently and there are few variations as to how this might work. - Back in the day we used to have a round up from each group -is there any point bringing this back? I suspect not but would be interested in other people's opinions. Please send suggestions for other items. Best, david
