After discussion with ICT colleagues we now feel the information below better states the position on default quota bands and, with the examples below, also clarifies how the costs associated with changing bands will work. In response to questions, ICT is NOT at considering any further default quota limit changes at the present time. Due to the increasing complexity of managing Home Directory Quota Allowances, ICT will be introducing a simplified bands of disk quotas, based on a flat rate of £2.50 per GB, as follows: Quota Band (GB) Additional Annual Cost from Base 4GB for UGs and Service Accounts Additional Annual Cost from Base 8GB for Research / Taught PGs and Staff 4 Default – No Charge N/A 8 £10.00 Default – No Charge 12 £20.00 £10.00 16 £30.00 £20.00 20 £40.00 £30.00 *A one off fee of £10.00 will also be made to administer the change of each Quota Band request* *Departments may make a case for the quota for individual student to be increased, in these cases no additional charge will be made.* The table above reflects that the original default quota amount remains free of charge when a move to another band is made and it is only the amount over and above the default amount which will be charged (currently at £2.50 / GB). For example: A staff move from 8GB to 12GB would cost (12 - 8) x £2.50 = £10.00 per year whereas a UG move (without Dept support) from 4GB to 16GB would cost (16 – 4) x £2.50 = £30.00 per year plus in both cases a one-off Band Increase fee of £10.00 As noted previously these new quota bands and charges will come into effect from November 1^st 2013 and will be reflected in the published ICT SLA document shortly. Departmental Computing meeting

OS X Mavericks and wireless networks

There's a bug in OS X Mavericks which is preventing it from connecting easily to wireless networks using Cisco hardware (which is what we use at Imperial) If you upgrade, you are likely to find that you cannot connect to our wireless network. You can get round this: 1. Click the Wifi icon on the menu bar, and select 'Join Other Network' 2. In the 'Find and Join a Wi-Fi network' window type in Imperial-WPA and in the security drop down select WPA2 Enterprise 3. Type in the your Imperial College username and password in the relevant fields and click 'Join' It will almost certainly lose the connection whenever the machine goes to sleep or is rebooted so you will have to go through the process each time you use the machine. We (and many others!) have logged a fault with Apple - I'm hoping that they will fix it fairly quickly - but if you've not upgraded then I'd suggest waiting a little while for the fix. Steve

This work was postponed from its original date of September 20th as this was felt to be too close for comfort to the start of the new Academic Year. We do however now need to progress this work so could I please ask you to ensure that this message gets sent to research groups as they may be using the ICADS1 domain controller for authentication and will need to make a change to prevent future disruption to their work. Thanks Chris ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ICT has been running a project to upgrade our domain controllers (which are responsible for authentication) from Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2012. We are now near the end of this and are looking to remove one of our domain controllers called ICADS1, this is a server that has been around for a long time, and we are aware that some people might be using this in their authentication configuration. Please can you publicise and communicate that our preferred alternative authentication address is the following; ICADSLDAP.ic.ac.uk This is a load balanced address that means which means that once this is configured, it will not need to be changed in the future and it will improve performance as you will not suffer any interruption to your system if an individual server goes down. If you find that this does not work, then please let us know and we will provide you with an alternative solution. We plan on powering down ICADS1 at 10am on Wednesday October 30th, to help identify any systems that are using this, if this causes you any issues, then please contact the ICT Service Desk and we will work with you to quickly resolve this.
