Hi,

If you plan on using the Fourier expansion in the third direction (2.5D), than yes you can start with a 2D solution and than use expansion. This is good if your problem is periodic in that direction.

If you are thinking about a full 3D case you might experiment with interpolation (see manual). I was unsuccessful with this approach, but have not really tried.
