Committee changes

Hello all, Some competition details first. Please put your name down if you’re interested in BUCS. The sooner we can plan travel and accommodation the better. Then for some Club administration details. Soon coming up are the committee elections for next year. We feel the current committee positions aren’t fit for purpose and need some tweaking in preparation for you lot to take over. I am including the proposed committee roles and their job descriptions below for you to be aware of them before we send them for Union approval. Please make known any objections. We really do encourage everyone to apply for a role when election season starts. I’ll be posting more informative content on the various responsibilities. Additionally we’ll be creating a ‘Committee guide’ document with tips and instructions for the next committee. Some of you may have gotten an impression of a hectic committee this year, but I assure you that’s just coming out of the full lockdown last year and suffering that break in club activities. We’re preparing it to be smoother sailing for years to come. I’d also like to point out that taking on one of these positions is excellent material for your CVs, and great preparation for post-grad life. All of the positions are important and each involves a different skillset and attitude. Proposed Committee roles Chair/President Job description: Ensuring the club is run according to the constitution and the Union’s code of conduct. Representing the club. Guiding the club’s evolution and growth. Dealing with venue bookings. Chairing committee and general meetings. Assisting and communicating with the instructor. Attending sessions to track the club status and encourage members. CV relevance: Leadership Financial and legal administration People skills Treasurer Job description: Budgeting for the club’s activities. Coordinating session and instructor fees. Requesting grant allocations. CV relevance: Finance Accounting Spreadsheeting/record keeping skills Secretary Job description: Maintaining club records and history. Preserving knowledge for future committees. Taking minutes at committee and general meetings. CV relevance: Record keeping Meetings and team experience Media and Communications Officer Job description: In charge of the club email account. Keeping members up to date with club changes and activities. Maintaining the club Instagram account. Promoting the club online, through the Felix, and other means. Planning fresher fair presence. CV relevance: People skills Email/letter writing Social media strategizing Promotional activity Competition Captain (two positions to be filled, main and vice) Job description: Searching for external events and competitions for the club to enter. Accompanying members travelling to competitions. Rebuilding the club’s team capacity. Monitoring the rank composition of the membership. Encouraging members to enter competitions, and answering their queries. CV relevance: Competitive spirit Strategy Event/travel planning Team work Equipment Manager (someone in charge of making sure gis and mats are available and up to standard) Job description: Maintaining the club’s inventory or used equipment, specifically the mats and gis. Coordinating the lending of gis to new members and having them washed. Organising the cleaning of the mats. Requesting replacements of unusable equipment. Proposing purchases of new equipment. BUCS

Hello all, I’ve added a section for BUCS to the competition interest sheet: https://imperiallondon-my.sharepoint.com/:x:/g/personal/nfg18_ic_ac_uk/EZx-… BUCS is basically the biggest event of the year. It’s the organisation that oversees higher education sport for the United Kingdom and they hold a Judo event every year. This year it’ll be at the University of Wolverhampton (Walsall) campus, which is also where the British Judo Association is based, so extra special. Anyway, the entry deadline isn’t till the 15th of February (the competition is 26th-27th Feb) but we want to start getting an idea of who might be going. Not just out of interest but also because we need to sort out our membership system with Imperial Athletes, and that’s closely related to BUCS. We want to make the system is good as possible for you. Hello all, Happy New Year! In the theme of starting afresh, please let me know if you are on this mailing list and don’t want to be. I know there are still many names from past members and I don’t think the link to remove yourself works. Let me know and I can remove you. Sessions We will confirm the date we start sessions back up when we’re sure of it, hopefully as soon as possible. In the meantime, Glenn’s Budokwai morning sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays 7:00-8:00am will be starting this Wednesday 5th of January. This will be of interest to anyone who wanted to grade last year, couldn’t, and still wants to ahead of the entry deadlines listed below. Let me know. Calendar There are two competitions that can be entered this month: Kent Kyu Grade Open January 23rd (Sunday) Deadline for entry: January 16th (Sunday) Note: this one has only kyu grades, no black belts https://www.britishjudo.org.uk/event/kent-kyu-grade-open-2022/ University of Warwick Invitational Tournament January 29th (Saturday) Deadline for entry: January 14th (Friday) https://www.warwicksu.com/venues-events/events/4030/22003/ If you go to the BJA events page you’ll see that the Scottish Open is also this month. However, this event was, according to the JudoScotland facebook page, cancelled due to COVID regulations. The Warwick tournament will have a pretty big university presence since they directly invite other uni clubs. It’s a very well organised club, so the event will be a great experience. Both the events can be entered by all Kyu grades from 6th to 1st, and I think even ungraded but licensed white belts can enter the Warwick one. Travel and Whatsapp Chat Both of these events are close enough to London that you could travel the morning of but you could also travel the night before and stay at a hotel. As we did for the Sheffield competition last month, we have a whatsapp chat for anyone competing so that joint travel/accommodation can be coordinated.
