Hello all, Happy Halloween! MONDAY SESSIONS Tomorrow at 12:00am we will send out sign up sheets for tomorrow’s (Monday 1st Nov) sessions. We are in a new, smaller venue for the mondays; the Meeting Rooms 3&4. These are located in Beit, 1st floor, just beyond the Activity Spaces. The most direct route there would be entering the building through the door located to the right of the Union bar and going up that staircase. If you go through the main entrance to the lift area you’ll have to go through the Activity Spaces where there may be people from other societies. Since the room is smaller, we have to reduce numbers again to 12 people per hour. We’re not thrilled by this and are looking into getting another day in the week for training. Wednesdays will still be 16 people and in Activity Space 1. BJA MEMBERSHIP Getting Imperial Athletes is enough to be a member of our club for uni purposes, but to practice judo on a long term basis, say once you’ve done 2 or 3 sessions, you will definitely need a license from the BJA. This will provide insurance in the case of injuries and allow you to enter events and competitions, as well train in other clubs to compensate for the limited time we have at uni. The BJA runs a Student Voucher Scheme, providing university students beginning the sport with a 1-year membership, a judo uniform, and one grading for £30 (absolute bargain). This isn’t just for complete beginners, if you did judo as a kid that’s fine too, as long as you didn’t have a licence in the past two years. We realise that without the uniforms we haven’t been able to give a full taste of judo yet but hopefully it’s a good enough sampling that you’ll know soon that you want to continue. Reflections on today’s session

Hello all, Today’s (wednesday 27th) session went more than swimmingly. You all showed good spirit. I said in the email that I was only expecting a focus on groundwork but we were pleasantly surprised by the mats’ adhesion to the Activity Space floor and so we were able to get in some good standing randori as well. The number was also perfect for the space we had so we’ll be continuing that number for future signup sheets. A quick reminder that if today wasn’t your first session, please make sure you paid using the shop item on our page on the Union website. We do have names so we will know. We’re also not being greedy, we just need to keep the club affloat. For future sessions, we’ve been given the approval to store new roll-out mats. What this means is a much quicker set up time (it would entail moving 5 slightly heavy rolls plus a few rectangular mats to fill borders, instead of the 36 individual mats we had to move today) and no separation whatsoever (the rolls have velcro). So that’s promising for standing work in the future. That said, anything can happen from one day to the next. Fingers crossed, things continue as well as they’re looking at the moment. Anyone who came to our first Monday session will remember that we were double booked with boxing, leading to a venue fiasco. That fiasco has continued, we lost the room, but the Union have very helpfully managed to get us a replacement venue for Mondays to come: Meeting Rooms 1&2. If I remember correctly these are located just beyond Activity Space 2. Once we have roll out mats it will be no issue setting out mats in this venue, but if we train on Monday we will still have to use the conventional mats, and it will be a bit of a hassle to get them to the venue. We’ll keep you updated on that. Finally, the beginners for the most part still had to deal with no-gi techniques and wrestling. From a self-defense and all-round fighter point of view this isn’t too bad. However, the unique selling point and source of interesting tactics in judo is the ability to grab each other’s jackets. We’re still in the process of acquiring gis to lend for each session. They’ll hopefully be here soon. Till next time, Nicolas

Hello all, SIGN UP SHEETS WILL BE SENT AT 20:00 TODAY (TUESDAY 26TH) Our next training session will be held tomorrow, Wednesday 27th. It still remains to be seen if we can find a solution but the session will probably be groundwork focused. We’re working on that problem. CLOTHING Our gis still haven’t arrived (administrative delays), so once again if you’re coming to the beginner session, just come in clothing comfortable for wrestling, and if you’re coming to the advanced/intermediate session we’re expecting you to have your own gi. ATTENDANCE/NUMBERS Crowding was an issue for our first session so this time we’re reducing numbers down from 20 to 16. We’re still finding the sweet spot. We will be sending out the signup sheet by email at 20:00 today (Tuesday 26th) for the two sessions tomorrow (Wednesday 27th). Each session will have a limited number of 16 each. Don’t worry if you don’t make it! You can join at any time. One session will be for beginners, one will be for intermediate/advanced people. Beginner session Wednesday 16:00-17:00 Activity Space 1 Intermediate/Advanced session Wednesday 17:00-18:00 Activity Space 1 Please arrive up to 10 minutes early to the session. The earlier we can set out mats and get changed, the more of the allotted hour can be used for judo. If you get lost or suddenly can’t come email us or send a dm to our instagram. FEES If this is no longer your first session we will be charging you £3 a session. The shop item will be released on https://www.imperialcollegeunion.org/activities/a-to-z/judo at 20:00. No session today - reflections on monday’s session

Hello all, It was a pleasure to have those of you who managed to sign up on monday. A shame we lost a bit of time to dealing with the boxing-double-booking fiasco, Murphy’s law in full effect! It was a bit crowded so we may reduce planned numbers a bit for next session - TBC. In any case, try to refrain from coming to sessions unannounced or bringing a friend, simply because at the moment mat space is premium. It was also annoying we were limited to only groundwork - we’re working on fixing that for future sessions, it just involves a bit of coordination between societies and the Union. That said, if you’re a beginner it’s a safe introduction to very useful techniques and if you’re more experienced it’s a very intense session of rolling with our coach showing you some pretty efficient submissions. We will eventually work in standing work too though. The aim will also be to have gis ready to lend for next session - we’ll let you know how that goes. Just a quick reminder in case you weren’t aware: There is no training session today (wednesday 20th) or monday 25th. Our coach isn’t available but will hopefully be back for Wednesday 27th. Besides, a graduation event today has taken our booked room. You’ll hear from us, but don’t hesitate to contact us. Regards, Nicolas

Hello all, Our first two sessions have now been fully booked! Don’t worry if you didn’t land a place; once we’re in the swing of things more time will be available. The next two session days (wed 20th and mon 25th) will unfortunately be off for non-club/uni related reasons, but then we’ll be back emailing sign-up sheets for mondays and wednesdays every week.
