President: Zhang Yufeng [https://mcusercontent.com/d91a1cb130f12317830464586/images/d79a2327-a6fb-e7a...] Being a college student at an overseas university is not easy. Having to deal with the pandemic and the ever-changing social restrictions just makes the situation worse. But I believe that with careful planning and a bit of optimism, these few years will still be memorable for us. The 38th ExCo has done a wonderful job in planning events that were able to bring us together despite our distance. They have shown us that despite the pandemic, there are still opportunities for us to make new friends and foster close bonds. It will not be easy to fill their shoes but we will do our best. A good friend of mine once said that I should ājust do what makes me happyā. I hope everyone in SingSoc can follow that simple piece of advice. There are going to be moments while you are in the UK that are going to get you down. It could be the stress from the pending deadline of a major project, or the homesickness from missing your loved ones back in Singapore. But I do hope that you are able to find some activity that will give you the motivation to keep going. And if it is something that SingSoc can help you with, please do not hesitate to reach out to any members of the ExCo. I would like to once again thank everyone for putting their faith in the 39th. I hope to live up to those expectations by planning events that you will want and you will enjoy, so as to make SingSoc a home away from home. These next few months will not be easy, but I am certain we will all be able to get through them. š Stay safe and stay healthy. 2. Vice-President & Acting Liaison Officer: Tan Yee Lin [https://mcusercontent.com/d91a1cb130f12317830464586/images/fe1f91b3-9349-071...] It has been a difficult year for all of us, transitioning to remote studies, handling the isolation brought about by the prolonged lockdown restrictions and being away from friends and family. Slowly but surely, weāre beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel thanks to scientific breakthroughs in COVID-19 vaccination. As we usher in the new normal, we hope that ICSS will be your pillar of support, providing you with memorable experiences that would define your time in Imperial. The 38th Executive Committee has done an outstanding job adapting what used to be in-person activities into the virtual space. As a fresher, I recall being slightly anxious about how I would adapt to university life without even having a single face-to-face interaction with my fellow cohort mates or personal tutors. Having the opportunity to bond with other fellow Singaporeans in Imperial through events such as Sojourn as well as Mums and Dads really eased this transition for me. I still remember fondly about the mind blowing puzzles during Sojourn, the hilarious IG memes by the OGLs (Yellow OG all the way!), and above all, that feeling of shock and betrayal sinking in when it was revealed that the people around me were actually secret freshers that left me pacing around the room for ages (you know who you areā¦). So hereās a shout out to the 38th ExCo for delivering an amazing job for the past year! It wouldn't be easy to fill their shoes, but weāll give it our best shot for the year to come. Though most of us in ExCo have yet to set foot on London soil, weāll work closely with the previous batches of seniors to reinstate in-person events where possible, such as the ski trip. While we would love to continue holding all our mass events just like before, the ever changing and unpredictable COVID-19 situation globally has made it a huge challenge to forecast the suitability of our plans. Above all, the safety of our members is of utmost priority, hence we will closely monitor the evolving situation when assessing the possibility of bringing back various events. Nonetheless, weāll do our best to fill the year with exciting old and new activities for you. During these turbulent times, we understand that the constantly changing restriction rules, quarantine regulations and vaccination guidelines can be a mess to keep up with. Hence, do follow our social media channels (Facebook and Instagram) and keep a lookout on your Facebook cohort group pages for the latest updates about the COVID-19 situation both in the UK and in Singapore. Please drop us a message if you have any feedback or comments throughout the year! Weāll be more than happy to hear from you! :) Stay safe and all the best for your studies! Yee Lin 3. Secretary & Acting Major Event Officer: Zhang Hanqian [https://mcusercontent.com/d91a1cb130f12317830464586/images/344e5ef1-4a38-431...] Running for ExCo a month ago, nothing couldāve prepared me for āThe Real Dealā. Thanks for attending the Easter By-Elections. I know you wondered which role Iād choose. 1. With respect to votersā wishes, and 2. In line with āoperational requirementsā: Iām now your āSecretaryā. Until a successorās chosen, Iām also your acting āMajor Event Officerā. I campaigned for my two current roles on this platform: 1. To maintain continuity and help ICSS through COVID-19 2. To continue K&T as a concise and accurate newsletter: * Working with the Liaison Officer to communicate info * Keeping members informed of volatile updates 3. A remotely held Pre-Departure Trip (PDT) 4. To foster intra-ExCo communication 5. To keep the spirit of Major Event alive: * ME 2022, by everyone, for everyone 6. To be your listening ear: * This is why Iām welcoming feedback to serve you better To those who voted for me (and who didnāt): Weāre honoured to have your trust placed in us. We wonāt be able to achieve all promises, but weāll always do our best for you. Special thanks to Yuyang, Julian, Richard, and Churn Hym. 4. Treasurer & Acting Sports Officer: Diva Selina [https://mcusercontent.com/d91a1cb130f12317830464586/images/d8235900-10fe-af2...] Summer Term already? Who would have guessed another academic year will soon be over. Ā· For those who just ended their exams, cheers to that š Ā· To the rest of us who have several papers to go, keepā”ļø fuelling the motivationā”ļø as we are reaching the end of the road!! First and foremost, thanks for the trust and support. I am grateful to be part of the 39th. Remember that we, the 39th, hear you and we change for the better. Drop the ExCo a message or email (singapore@imperial.ac.uk) if you have fresh ideas on what ICSS could provide to everyone. Should we: - Host a job prospect podcast? šš - Sell ICSS Merchandise (e.g. bag pins, mug, tote)? šÆ - Start a āHow to be a chef in 5 secondsā series where we share your trusty recipes? š - More to come ... Letās pray that we can all meet in London and enjoy the soothing sub-tropical climate. Last but not least, Iām down if anyone fancies going to live gigs and musicals. Wherever you are, I hope you and your loved ones are healthy and safe. Best wishes, Diva 5. Events Officer: Huang Ruiyue [https://mcusercontent.com/d91a1cb130f12317830464586/images/1e1d2755-ecd9-7c3...] Hii I'm Ruiyue, a first year civil engineering student and one of your newly elected Events Officers. First and foremost, thank you for all your support! It's a great honour to be part of the 39th Executive Committee and I look forward to planning more fun and enjoyable activities for you this year. The situation we're in right now is unprecedented. Though we would love to bring back all the signature events SingSoc has had in the past, many in-person activities have to be cancelled, postponed or carried out virtually to adhere to the new regulations and ensure the safety of our members. However, we are also introducing new events that are hopefully as exciting, but we're going to need a lot of feedback from you to know if we're heading in the right direction. So please fill in the interest form sent out yesterday and don't hesitate to approach any of the ExCo members if you have any feedback or suggestions you'll like us to hear. Lastly, all the best to those whose exams aren't over yet (we can do it!). Please stay safe wherever you are and let's hope we can all meet in London very soon:) Best regards, Ruiyue 6. Events Officer: Lim Xin Rong [https://mcusercontent.com/d91a1cb130f12317830464586/images/acde675f-50d3-fd6...] Hey people! Iām Xin Rong, your Events Officer. Thanks for all your support up till now. This is just a short and sweet summary of my life: I canāt remember what I was doing till primary school, then I was mostly messing about in secondary school and high school, and lastly what I did in army stays in army. And so, here I am now, a fresher studying aerospace engineering. What I enjoyed most about school was the friends, and that hasnāt changed a bit now. Besides that, it gives me great joy to push the buttons of teachers and test the system in ways I can think of. Outside of study, I play football a lot, and am also a bit of a thrill-seeker. I hope to be able apply some of my experience into SingSoc, bringing more thrill and surprises in the coming academic year. Instead of just burying your heads in Panopto all the time, I think university should also be about having fun, meeting new people, and enjoying the benefits of being 18+. So, Iām really looking forward to hosting more events for all of you and hope to see you someday, somewhere. Cheers mates!! āŗ A wise man once said: donāt dwell too much on the past, donāt daydream too much about the unknown future. Just embrace everything and live in the moment, because what you do in the present is the only thing you have control of in this world. The rest is fate... 7.
