We've come to the final, special edition of the The Kaya & Toast Times by the 38th Executive Committee! Thank you all for your support over the course of the past year - we could not have done it without you. In this special edition, we will conclude our term by introducing the 39th Executive Committee and looking back at the work we've done for this past year. Each of us in the 38th would also like to say a few words to the people who've helped us along the way; do bear with us for our long posts! (Note: it is recommended that you read this issue on a desktop to preserve the formatting.) A big thank you to everyone for your support in the past year. We wish the 39th all the best for their term and do continue to support the events that they conduct! For the last time, Yuyang Cen The CEO of IKEA was just elected Prime Minister in Sweden. He should have his cabinet together by the end of the weekend. Content 1. The 39th Executive Committee 2. Words from the President, Mein Yeak 3. Words from the Vice-President, Chern Heng 4. We wish them a great term ahead and hope that the society continues to support them fully! 2. Words from the President, Mein Yeak To my dear ICSS members, I have said most of what I wanted to during our Easter by-election and all our other events. So I shall keep this short. Thank you again for supporting my 38th ExCo and I throughout our year in office. Looking back, we have had much to be proud of. We brought Sojourn online successfully, started the Imperial Career Exchange, and kept Major Event going for yet another year. Most importantly, we’ve helped ease our freshers into life at Imperial, in what has been a most challenging and daunting time to start university. Although the key positions in the 39th ExCo have been filled, the fact remains that we have yet to find a Sports Officer, Liaison Officer, and MEO. I apologise for not being able to do so, and I promise my ExCo and I will assist the 39th in finding another three members to complete their committee. I urge everyone to give their fullest support to our new 39th committee members. They have bravely stepped up to the task of leading ICSS. The sun is peeking over the horizon, and we are all looking forward to our events restarting again for the new academic year. [https://mcusercontent.com/d91a1cb130f12317830464586/images/3105fed5-82bb-4bb...] Finally, to Chern Heng, Yuyang, Leanne, Gillian, Merrill, Julian, Churn Hym and Richard, we have reached the end of the journey which started from our very first Sunday meeting (six hours long but still shorter than the 37th!). As I said at the end of our by-election, I feel I have been a conductor of a talented orchestra. With your unwavering commitment to ICSS, I have found every one of our meetings enjoyable and productive, and my time working together with you meaningful. By the way, we have yet to take an official ExCo photo together so come October, let’s have a good dinner at OC 😊 (my treat!). Your sincerely, Mein Yeak 3. Words from the Vice-President, Chern Heng Taking up this role, I had a lot of excitement [https://mcusercontent.com/d91a1cb130f12317830464586/images/cda98957-84b9-464...] about what I can do, what we can achieve in the coming year. Although as most of you know, I was not able to achieve what I initially set out to do as the VP, and that is a great disappointment to me. But as I step down, I have set a new goal, that I will be doing my part to bring Ski Trip to ICSS in 2021. Thank you ICSS for all your support that you have given to the 38th in these tough times. I am very grateful for all the people who supported our events, be it in attendance or planning, as we had to be creative and change up all our events to fit an online modality. It took some time adjusting, but I hope the events were meaningful to all that attended them. To my 38th committee, I am very proud of what you guys have done with this situation just thrown to us so suddenly. When we were running for our roles and giving our speeches in early 2020, nobody could ever expect the year that was ahead of us. But I have seen many of you step up to the challenge and pushed to make the best of what we had. And to Mein Yeak, thank you for being an outstanding President, and I really appreciate how much you care for the ExCo. Thank you for leading by example, my most vivid memory of our meetings will be your face (don’t make it weird), as your camera will be on no matter the circumstance. To Xian Fong, thank you for taking the time to reply to my long messages on planning Ski Trip, and thank you for offering to help again for Ski Trip 2021! To my batchmates and seniors, thank you so much for coming to our events constantly to support it. It feels heartwarming to see that people are still returning to ICSS even though we no longer have free food to offer, and it is good to see new and familiar faces doing well at home this past year. To the 39th committee, thank you guys for stepping up and continuing our ICSS traditions even though you have not experienced most of it properly. I believe that you will be able to start afresh, see ICSS from a new perspective and bring a home away from home. Signing out, Chern Heng 4. Words from the Secretary, Yuyang 'I laughed, I cried a number of times, I sweat, I danced, I got a shot, I ate, and I had many epiphanies' - Gwyneth Paltrow Hey everyone! It is your ✨Sexytary✨ - oops I meant Secretary ;) It has been more than a year since I frantically wrote my first newsletter on my flight back to Singapore, and now it is time for me to pen my last issue. The past year has been a different year, to say the least. Unlike Yixuan, who had the opportunity to send the KnT issues from all corners of the globe, I was only able to edit and send out my issues from all corners of my house: my bed, my study table, my kitchen, etc. Nevertheless, I had a lot of fun writing each issue to bring you all the latest updates about our events and other stuff. As with tradition, I will now like to thank the following groups of people (in no order of importance). To my housemates, Kang Wei, Siting, and Si Yu: [https://mcusercontent.com/d91a1cb130f12317830464586/images/a72aa492-c047-470...] I still find it hilarious that we have actually never stayed in our house together, and the closest we ever got to staying together was when we played Mario Kart in my hall room until 3am during the holidays LOL. Still, I am grateful for the support that you all have given me in the past year and thank you for listening to my sob stories, although I sometimes feel that I am third-wheeling (or fifth-wheeling?) whenever we call. Hopefully we will be able to cook bad dishes everyday and eat ice cream every night under one roof soon (without wrecking the kitchen hopefully!) To my Chem Eng batchmates, thank you for always supporting the ICSS events. Our (almost) weekly meetups seems to be the only semblance of a normal school life in these crazy times, and thank you for answering my questions about studies (because I don't go for lectures). Let us work hard and survive this together!! [https://mcusercontent.com/d91a1cb130f12317830464586/images/a3efd041-51c5-4842-ae98-8b0b6701e250.jpg]To my Mums & Dads' mom, Doraleen, and the kids, Ruiyue, Kennedy, Cassius, and Eugene, thank you for your constant support. I had a lot of fun going out with you all, and it heartens me to see you all enjoy our events (at least on the surface). Let us go out for a meal again when we are all reunited, and I hope that you all will continue to support the incoming batch (except Eugene who is graduating). All the best for your exams! To my Acad Reps 20/21: Thank you for volunteering/being volunteered (delete wherever applicable) for being the Acad Reps for your batch and for supporting PDT. Thank you for alleviating the worries and concerns of your freshers (if any), and when it is alright for us to meet again, I will bring y'all out for an appreciation dinner 😇. To the 38th: Thank you for always tolerating my nonsense and my frequent 'Do you want to hear a story?' during the meetings. I know that you all want to say no, but to be honest, I do not really care about what you think. I hope that you all still enjoyed listening to them. Many thanks to Mein Yeak for being a great leader and for always being optimistic when the team was feeling down, to Chern Heng for being encouraging yet frank, to Merrill for being the voice of reason and for handling the math (I think my brain shut down during the latest round of calculations), to Gillian for always listening to me rant about EVERYTHING and humouring my bad stories, to Leanne for always coming up with wonderful ideas, to Julian for always publicising our events whenever we needed to, to Richard for being realistic and offering us a different point of view, and to Churn Hym for bearing with my complaints and for helping me with school. [https://mcusercontent.com/d91a1cb130f12317830464586/images/6df0587d-8ea6-4d3...] To Black OG 20/21, thank you for being a part of Sojourn! If not for you, we would not have been the best OG ;) To my predecessor Yixuan: Thank you for showing me the ropes when I first started out, and for allowing me to bother you with questions long after you have stepped down. To the 37th, thank you for always giving us advice and assistance whenever we needed them! Hopefully school has been treating you well, and all the best for your studies! To my successor Hanqian and the incoming 39th, thank you for stepping up to lead ICSS. These are very trying times, but do not hesitate to approach the 38th if you need any help. You all can do it! And lastly, to each and every single on of you, thank you for staying by my side all this while and not unsubscribing as I spammed your emails once (or sometimes thrice) every fortnight. I hope that you have enjoyed reading the newsletter as much as I have enjoyed penning them. Words cannot express how thankful I am for your support and for showing up to our events despite them being much simpler than the ones planned by past ExCos, so I shall just stop here. I hope that you all will support the incoming Executive Committee, just like how you supported the 38th (if applicable). Now that I am done with KnT, I will have more time to work on my personal project, the ☕ ICSS Tea and Juice* 🥤, which contains the latest, piping hot gossip ;) That is all from me. Take care, and hopefully, we can all return to campus next academic year, be it for school or for the graduation ceremony. Your forever-tired ex-Secretary, Yuyang *Terms and conditions apply. Credit goes to Churn Hym and Gillian for the name. 5. Words from the Treasurer, Merrill Hey everyone! It’s been my pleasure serving you as the[https://mcusercontent.com/d91a1cb130f12317830464586/images/6137ca6d-4110-4a4...] 38th ExCo treasurer. I hope you have enjoyed the events that we have planned throughout the year as we did our best with the unprecedented situation. We will be sure to guide the new ExCo, to ensure the staple ICSS events will continue to be a platform for all Singaporeans to bond and live out their best international university experience. As always, I am up for beer if you are. 6. Words from the Events Officer, Gillian Ant (And)… It’s a wrap! Thank you to everyone who has been on this journey with me. Be it attending our events, giving advice, or lending a listening ear, I am truly grateful to all of you for being my pillar of support. A big shoutout to the whole of Team Sojourn! :”) Honestly I am so proud of how Sojourn turned out and it is because of every single one of you who have put in so much effort (and brain power) to make this a huge success. For an online orientation, it was really super duper f-ant-astic! To the 38th: it definitely hasn’t been easy staring at our screens for hours each week churning out ‘creative content’, but hey we still did it! We sure have had our highs and lows but we make a great team and I enjoyed our (non-ExCo) conversations. It’s funny and sad at the same time @ how we’ve only actually met together once last September so let’s have a funsie outing when Leanne and I are back in Singapore, and at a more central location please. To Leanne, my only other gal pal in ExCo and working buddy, thank you for the past year and let’s not die too badly in the coming 3 weeks… To more chinatown trips! :-D To the 39th: my brave warriors, thank you for stepping up! All the best for the coming year and don’t worry, you’ll have lots of support from your seniors and batchmates so don’t hesitate to ask for help. Fingers crossed that we will be able to throw water at each other at Sentosa, watch musicals and queue for free food again! Once again, a big thank you to YOU for supporting us in our events and for giving me the opportunity to serve you all. I hope to be able to see you guys around in Summer or in the next academic year! :) Why do ants not get sick? Because they are full of antibodies. Haha! Ok I promise this is the ant of my ant jokes. All the best and jiayous for your finals! Your ant-icipating-summer-break ex-EO, Gillian 7. Words from the Events Officer, Leanne Being in ExCo for the past year has been much more of a roller coaster ride than I could have ever imagined. It has been a difficult year and it was a shame that physical events could not have been organised more often :( But through the hardships, there are a lot of things I am thankful for. To my fellow ExCo members, thank you for always listening to what I have to say and for offering to help when things got rough. To my yellow OG members, thank you for keeping in touch and for doing your best during Sojourn :) To everyone who attended our events despite it being in less than ideal conditions, thank you so much. I'm really glad I got to meet all of you. Lastly, to my partner-in-crime Gillian, thank you for everything and I'm glad I got to know you much better over the past year :') To the next EOs: I'm sure you'll do an amazing job and always remember that I'm just a text away if you need any help! All the best :)) I'm excited to see what events will be planned for the next year and I hope to see everyone more during future (in-person!) events. It's been an honour to organise events for everyone in these hard times :) Leanne 8. Words from the Liaison Officer, Julian Hey ya’ll! Thank you for taking some time out of your day to read the posts I make. It means a lot to me that so much of the work I do helps you find opportunities in the future. From Govtech to Shopee and even UKSSC events, I hope that ICSS has opened up some doors for you in future. I know the next LO will do a better job than I did and be sure to watch out for even more amazing posts from ICSS! Once again, thank you all for giving me this opportunity to help bridge the gap between ICSS and events organisers outside of our school. There’ll be many more opportunities to utilise in the future with the 39th so treat them nicely and watch out for the LO posts. ORD LO! Yours faithfully, Julian (38th LO) 9. Words from the Sports Officer, Richard Hey everyone, I know that the previous year have not been a great time for sports but I just want to express my gratitude to those who supported our ICSS events in general. Especially thankful to those who found the time to attend our limited sessions in Singapore and London(before the lockdown) as well as those who gave me words of encouragement and advice about Sports and the BoardGames Online initiative. I would also like to thank my Sports Reps who despite the restrictions and low numbers tried their best to organise sessions. As restrictions are lifting in both Singapore and London, I hope to see you all at Play@ICSS sessions in the coming year! 38th Sports Officer, Richard 10. Words from the Major Event Officer, Churn Hym Hello all, This year had been an unprecedented year for many including SingCoc and ME in particular. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the entire Covid-19 situation, Singsoc had managed to continue to plan a slew of events both online and offline to keep our members engaged. All this would not be possible without the continued support from members. More specifically on ME, it was regrettable that a physical musical as per previous years was not able to be organised this year. However, I still like to thank members and fellow committee members for making ME21 a success and I seek your continued support for the 39th ExCo Committee and that we would be able to see a physical ME come back to live!
