1. ICSS Sports Reminder (26 March 2011)

Frisbee – 26 March 2011 (Sat) @ Hyde Park from 0900 to 1100

Just a reminder about our ICSS sports event which would be held this Saturday, 26 March, in Imperial’s very own ‘backyard’ - Hyde Park! It would be a Frisbee session so for those who are fans of the game, looking for a chance to work out, or simply anyone who is interested in playing recreationally… please do drop by! Some additional things to note:

1. The time of the event has been shifted forward to 9am;

2. A facebook event has been created (http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/event.php?eid=211220405558065), so please remember to RSVP.
(Apologies if the event can't be accessed. There seems to be some problem with the event page every now and then, so just RSVP whenever possible.);

3. The exact location of the playing ground would be the spot where the Freshers' Picnic was held, i.e. near the Horse statue. For those who are attending, please meet straight there at 9am.

Any queries please contact me at 07598797770 or at sportsofficer@ic-singsoc.net.
See you there!

Cheers,
Yuxiang

2. Seniors' Farewell Party (7 May 2011)

After several years’ worth of trudging to school, submitting coursework  and camping overnight in the library, another batch of Imperial College Singaporeans is about to graduate. In a few years’ time, it’ll be our turn, but for now, it’s the 2011 Seniors’ Farewell Party!

There’ll be games, prizes and food, so to all seniors graduating in the year 2011, come on down for one last chance to meet your juniors, who’ll be following in your footsteps (and your advice).

This will also be the inaugural Iron Chef Imperial event, so stay tuned to the weekly Kaya & Toast for more news!

Please RSVP at the Facebook events page: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=161198647270255

Iron Chef Imperial

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, elephants and camels; being an Imperial College student means cooking and living among lots of guys. Although no prizes will be given out for the latter condition, the 29th Exco would like to introduce the title of… Iron Chef Imperial!

(Author’s note: pause for applause)

As the year progresses, we’ve all noticed a definite upward trend in the food against time graph, except for a few anomalous data points. In order to recognize this valuable time spent not studying, the title of Iron Chef Imperial will be, at every major potluck event, handed to whoever gets the most votes from the guest judges. He (or she, as the case may be) will receive bragging rights and a brand spanking new chef’s hat with the ICSS logo.

The Evelyn Gardens halls are currently taking on all-comers in the culinary arts, and judging by their recent warm-up cookout held in Bernard Sunley House, the Wilsonites and Princes’ Gardens are in for a tough fight. Are you chef enough?

Guidelines:

  1. Not more than 3-4 pounds per person for which the portion of food is provided should be spent on the dish.
  2. If the current Iron Chef Imperial does not provide a dish at the subsequent potluck event (i.e., wishes to retire or has lots of coursework), the title automatically goes to the person with the highest votes.
  3. All forms of food and cooking will make the chef eligible for the title of Iron Chef Imperial. This includes roasting, toasting, baking, braising, steaming, broiling, blanching, boiling, , double boiling, poaching, pressure cooking,  grilling, steeping, frying, stir frying, deep frying, pan frying and smoking. No-bake cheesecakes are also allowed.
  4. Take-away and subsequent decanting of food from Oriental Canteen or any other established eatery/restaurant is not allowed. Violators will be mocked for the rest of their college and subsequent life.
  5. Hiring/persuading/blackmailing of celebrity chefs such as Gordon Ramsay and Thomas Keller is frowned upon. Not as bad if they are persuaded to buy ICSS membership.
  6. Sabotage* character assassination and smear and slander campaigns are strictly not allowed. Violators will be made to either do the macarena in the Queen’s Lawn Café during lunchtime (at full volume, with accompanying soundtrack) or do the intended target’s dishes for a month.

* Sabotage also includes “Sorry, it just totally, completely slipped out of my hands by accident.”

3. The Incredibles are recruiting!

We are very happy to announce the formation of The Incredibles, a new group dedicated to helping freshers and seniors alike throughout the year. The Incredibles will be comprised of the OGLs, gamemasters, Special Forces, academic representatives, media masters and sports representatives, all crucial roles that need talented and keen individuals; just like you!

Because we’d like to find out more about you and your talents, we will be holding meet and greet sessions on 30th April and 14th May.

Simply click on the following link, fill out the form, and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible with more details about where and when to meet us. Each meeting will be about ten minutes long, and all you’ll need to bring along is honesty and yourself! Sign up now!

OGL
As an OGL, you will take on the mantle of big brother (or sister, we’re not gender-biased here), friend, cheerleader, mentor, and clown; sometimes all at once. It’s not the easiest job in the world, but do it right and you’ll bask in the undying worship of two dozen freshers. I love the smell of adoration in the morning.

Gamemasters
“Cometh the time, cometh the man.” Be a gamemaster, and it’ll be also a case of cometh the fun. We need enthusiastic people with lots of fun game ideas, both during Sojourn 2011 and throughout the year. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, will be to shout loudly, have a quick eye for cheaters, and even quicker reflexes to dodge any retaliatory measures.

Special Forces

Can you wake suddenly, think instantly and react immediately? Do you know a shortcut from Tottenham Court Road to Takashimaya? Have a class 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 driving license? In the Special Forces, not only is it about getting things done, it’s about getting things done swiftly, stealthily, and with no witnesses.

Sports Representatives

If you think you can take on all-comers in a sport (air hockey also counts), look no further, because being a sports representative could be where you’ll find your calling. No matter hardcore, casual or just a downright kinky player, these representatives will be the leaders in their various sporting arenas. Javelin Catching is, unfortunately, as yet unrecognized as an official sport.

Academic Representatives

For those who’ve memorized  how much each piece of coursework contributes to your final grade, this just might be the job for you. The freshers and juniors will always be looking for advice on how to deal with schoolwork, so if you secretly dream of being Uncle Physics, your dreams are just a click away.

Media Masters
If you know the difference between an f2.0 and an f1.5 lens, we want you! If you know which way the video camera should be pointing and what the big red button does, we also want you! ICSS is always in need of photographers, videographers and editors. Whether you be aspiring, professional or just think you can hold a tripod really steady, hesitate no more and join us!
