1. President's Message on ICSS Membership

If you have already purchased ICSS membership, you may wish to skip the following message.

Dear all,

I will like to bring your attention to the purchasing of our Society membership. If you do not already know, our Society membership comes at a mere cost of £5. As a member, you will be entitled to many benefits and privileges. Just to give you a flavour of some of the benefits:

  • Entitlement to Members-only events (eg. Imperial Ski Trip)
  • Priority in registration for events over non-members
  • Subsidies for events (eg. Chinese New Year dinner, Bicester Trip)
  • Discount card to many popular restaurants and cafes
  • Opportunity to vote and have a say at OGMs and AGMs
  • And much more!

Hence, the sooner you sign up for membership, the faster you will gain access to all these lovely benefits, all at a very small cost!

If the above reason isn’t compelling enough for you, as a paying member for the Society membership, you will be assisting the entire Society in fulfilling a membership count quota required by the Union. Once our numbers are met, we will be awarded grants, bolstering the finances of the Society. This will then lead to events becoming cheaper and better! Much effort has been placed into every single event we organize. Being crippled by finances will mean all the effort will go to waste. So do help us to help you!

Signing up only requires a Debit/Credit card under your name, and a few minutes of your time. Instructions are:

  1. Go to www.imperialcollegeunion.org.
  2. Go under 'Clubs & Societies' and find 'Singapore' under A-Z clubs & societies list.
  3. Click "Shop" on the tab at the left hand side.
  4. Buy the membership for 5 pounds and we'll take care of the rest!

To all those who have already signed up for membership, I will like to say a big thank you! I warmly welcome you as a member of the Imperial College Singapore Society. To the rest, please do not deliberate any further and get your membership today!

Yours truly,
Wenjun

3. Let the ICSS Fiesta begin! (18 - 31 Oct 2010)

The long-awaited ICSS Fiesta now begins and will end on 31 Oct 2010!

Come together as current/ex- members of your halls to prepare a feast to kick off the Autumn term. But before you devour all the scrumptious dishes you have prepared, be sure to take the whackiest photos of the food / your group with the food / your group preparing the food and submit them for our ICSS Fiesta Food Photography competition!

This event is very special and we will be subsidising a part of your food expenses, so your participation in the Photography competition is essential or we will not be able to process your subsidies. Hence, submit legitimate photos for the various categories to our dear Liaison Officer, liaisonsofficer@ic-singsoc.net. The prizes for the ICSS Fiesta will be given out during our Ordinary General Meeting on 3 Nov 2010.

We wish you ALL THE BEST! :)

Seniors who require contact information with the Freshers who have just shifted into your ex-hall can still email Yu Leng at secretary@ic-singsoc.net for it.

  • Fiesta period: 18 to 31 October 2010
  • Deadline for competition: 31 October 2010
  • Competition Categories: Whackiest Photo, Best Caption, Most Halloweenish
  • Subsidies (*): 5-10 people - 5 pounds, 10-20 people - 10 pounds, 20 and above - 20 pounds

(*) The subsidy is a lump sum not a per pax subsidy. The subsidy will also depend on the headcount of the number of people in the photos submitted for the competition.

4. Ordinary General Meeting (3 Nov 2010)

ICSS will be holding its Ordinary General Meeting (OGM) on 3 Nov 2010.

All ICSS members are cordially invited to join us to get formally acquainted with the ICSS calendar till date and beyond. You are also welcome to offer suggestions for future events at this meeting.

The OGM will be followed by a movie screening of "UP!" with light bites and drinks provided, so come snuggle up with your fellow Singaporeans on this Wednesday afternoon!

The winners of our ICSS Fiesta will be made duly crowned with lovely prizes at our OGM too, so do keep this afternoon free and we hope to see many of you present!

5. ICSS Bicester Village Trip (6 Nov 2010)

Hello SingSoc Members!

Start saving your money because the ICSS Bicester Village shopping trip is here! These are the finalized details so far:

When: 6th November 2010 (Saturday)
Cost: £10 (Members)*, £12 (Non-Members)
Seats Available: 49

Please do note that your seat will be confirmed on a first come first serve basis! Also, ICSS members get priority over the seats so if you’re not an ICSS member yet, do sign up for membership on the Union Website to get a priority place on the coach! Here is how you can register:

1) ICSS members can start to register from now by e-mailing icss.events@gmail.com. Only ICSS members can book a place on the coach from now until 30th October. However, if you’re an ICSS member and you would like to bring along a friend who’s not from Imperial, you are allowed to book one extra seat for a friend. However, that friend has to pay the non-member price of £12.

2) After 30th October, registration will be open to non-members, so if there happens to be any seats left on the coach, anyone can email to the address above to book your seats. If the coach is already full, I will put you on the reserve list and should anyone back out, you might be able to go on this shopping trip!

If you have any questions, please feel free to direct them to me at icss.events@gmail.com and I will be happy to assist!

*The £10 cost that ICSS members pay is to cover the cost price of hiring the coach.

Cheers,
Sid

11. Message from the UKSSC regarding the UKSSC AGM

Fellow student leaders and friends,

I hope everyone is settling well for a new school year. I write regarding the subject, which my committee members and I have been receiving quite a fair bit of questions on. We had initially decided to launch our official website (which would contain the relevant information) on 16 Oct, but I thought it might be better to address the common questions personally first.

This informational email is, unfortunately, rather lengthy, so please bear with me.

1) Write-up of The UKSSC

Attached is a write-up of The UKSSC. I hope you will find it most useful as to the what and how of the dealings of The UKSSC.

2) The UKSSC Constitution

The second attached document is the Constitution of The UKSSC, which I had promised to deliver during my election speech last year. It contains 29 Articles of Association and the Election By-Laws. Most relevant to the AGM would be Articles 5, 6, 17, 18 and the Election By-Laws. Please do take the time to read through them because they will tell you everything you need to know about the upcoming elections. Detailed descriptions of the the job scope of each office is provided.

Though all the important details can be found in the Constitution, I have highlighted the more relevant ones in the topics below, for your reading pleasure.

3) Ratification of the Constitution

In order to imbue in the Constitution the authority to govern The UKSSC, we would like to ratify the document formally during the AGM. The process will be as such - the title of each Article will be read out, and you, representing your Partner Society, will be asked to demonstrate your agreement with the terms of the Article by way of raising your hand. Once we have repeated the process for all 29 Articles and the Election By-Laws, I will officially proclaim the Constitution ratified, and would request all of you to sign, on behalf of your society, on the Constitution. This will be the official hardcopy original of The UKSSC Constitution.

The ratification of our Constitution is a monumental moment for The UKSSC. Thus, to make it a meaningful event, please take your time to browse through the full Constitution, and should you have any objections to the terms, do contact me.

4) Eligibility of candidates

All Singaporean tertiary students are eligible to run for office. However, certain positions, like that of President and the Vice Presidents, require candidates to be, at most, in their penultimate year of study. Similarly, certain offices require candidates to reside in the relevant regions ie. Vice President (The South & Greater London) need necessarily be a person who resides in the region of either The South or Greater London, as classified accordingly by The UKSSC.

Candidates are required to be physically present at the AGM.

No subsidy in transport costs will be provided for candidates.

5) Important dates to note

30 Oct - Registration for candidacy opens

6 Nov - Sending of confirmation of attendance, with all the details of your transport booking as listed above

13 Nov - Candidates to register with The UKSSC their candidacy (with completed registration form and manifesto)

20 Nov - The UKSSC AGM and Elections at the Singapore High Commission in London (11am to 5pm - lunch is provided)

20/21 Nov - Handing Over Session*

Candidates are required to commit 20 and 21 Nov (until late noon) for a series of handing over sessions.

Yours sincerely,
Ng Shiyang
President
The UKSSC
