1. ICSS Major Event 2012: Solemates (18 Feb 2012)

Imperial College Singapore Society proudly presents Major Event 2012 - Solemates.


Solemates is a story about a boy named Umber. Orphaned at a young age, he was taken in by the Ella family. At first, things were bright: he had three square meals a day, a roof over his head and a place to call home. But as Umber grows up, the Ella family starts to make use of him. He washes the dishes, does the laundry and even helps the twins with their homework. Bullied and mistreated, Umber longs for a better life.

One day as the Ella family is going grocery shopping, Umber learns about the Queen’s Ball. Men from all the land are flocking to win Princess Cindy’s heart and Umber sees this as his chance. He waits eagerly for the day to come.

On the morning of the Queen’s Ball, his twin stepbrothers, Mozza and Salmon, inform Umber that Pa has grounded him. Distraught, Umber wallows in despair as his is stuck in his room in the basement.

Will he ever get to meet Princess Cindy? Will they ever live happily ever after? Only one way to find out.

2. UKSSC Captain's Ball League updates: 14-10 win to Imperial!

Here's a message from our Sports Officer Yuxiang:

Dear all,

 

I bring good news from the UKSSC Captain Ball Tournament's arena at Wilson House yesterday.

It was ICSS's first match, and the first of the series as well. With a very strong strength of 14 players, Team ICSS faced off the team from LSE. As a spectator, I was treated to a fantastic perfroamance with our team fully dominating and sweeping the points in the first quarter. The scoring streak continued in the second quarter, but the tide turned against us as we lost several points due to carelessness in the third, resulting in our lead to be reduced to just 1 point before the final set. In the last quarter however, our team regained composure and put up some great counter-attacking plays, bringing the final score to a 14-10 win to Imperial!!

I would like to thank and congratulate the team which is led by team captain Ashley Ng, and his vice-captain Esther Chan, on this great start to the tournament. At the same time, we'll be playing against UCL at 4pm next Wednesday at Wilson House. Please drop by to support our athletes!

3. Imperial As One Student Forum: Marketing Yourself Creatively for Jobs in the UK (8 Feb 2012)

The Human Resources Division and Imperial College Union have organised a Student Forum on Marketing Yourself Creatively. Our targeted audience this year are particularly students, especially undergraduates in their final years, PhDs and Postdocs - anyone who is interested in what it takes for that next steps!

Not only will you hear from leading academics, alumni and speakers from industry giving an insight into their own professional experiences in 'marketing themselves' throughout their career, you will also have the opportunity to ask questions to a distinguished panel. A reception would follow the formal session, giving further networking opportunities.

If you are graduating in 2012 or currently in your penultimate year, Singapore Airlines would like to invite you to apply for the Administrative Officer (AO) Programme. AOs are part of the top 10% of the workforce in Singapore Airlines. You may join the scheme as a Generalist or Specialist.

As a Generalist AO, you may be posted to various divisions such as Corporate Planning, Human Resources, Product & Services, Marketing, International Relations, among others. Regardless of where you may be posted, you will be in the thick of the airline industry, working with teams on business projects, analysing, reviewing, planning, innovating and implementing policies. You can look forward to job rotation, which will allow you to experience the diverse functional job areas and the unique business of Singapore Airlines.

You may join us as a Specialist AO if you have professional qualifications or skills, performing the duties of an Accountant, Internal Auditor, Legal Counsel, or Technical Services Engineer.

5. EDB - looking for fresh graduates and interns!

6. Message from the British Council

As part of the British Council’s series of Policy Dialogues, we are organising a symposium on Integrating International Students on 1 and 2 Feb 2012.  This is an event for participants to share research findings, examples of best practice and also practical tips on how their organisations go about the task of integrating the international student body with the local one.  For more details of the event, please visit our website . 

You can imagine that for a topic as such, we would love to hear from the students.  As such, we have come up with a simple survey to get a sense of students’ sentiments.  We want to hear from the students if they think enough is being done, or what other suggestions they may have, etc.
