1. OSC World Summit

On the frosty and frigid evening of 6 December 2011, representatives from the International Societies under the Union's Overseas Societies Committee arm gathered in the Union Dining Hall for a celebration of women in our College's international community. Amanda Chin, our lovely Ms Imperial 2010, was decked out in a resplendent cheongsam and flew our nation's flag high as she delivered a presentation on our country's culture to a panel of distinguished judges and Union representatives. She garnered special mention for our Society, being the only representative who spoke about National Service. Not only did she recognise the many sacrifices the men make during the two years, but also the women in their lives who pulled them through the NS journey. The panel was also impressed with Amanda's presentation on Elizabeth Choy, as she spoke fervently of how the nation's heroine was an inspiration and a role model for her.

Amanda (front row, fourth from right), together with the rest of the representatives from different countries.

On behalf of the entire ICSS, thank you Amanda for putting Singapore on the world map here in Imperial College, and congratulations for a job well done!

Love,

ICSS 29th Exco

2. ICSS Christmas party: It's this Saturday!

Ho, ho, ho!

It's time, once again, for the Imperial College Singapore Society Christmas Party!

Date: 10 Dec 2011 (Sat)
Time: 1900 - 2200 h

Venue: EEE Building Room 509 A/B

We've got a whole list of activities and games lined up for you, so come on down!

1. Pin the Face Xco Edition

2. Whatever-You-Don't-Like Pong

3. Blindfolded Pinata Bash

4. Santa's Musical Chairs

5. Don't Forget The Lyrics X'mas Edition

6. 我猜, 我猜, 我猜电影!

7. Potluck dinner
Our ICSS Christmas party is a potluck dinner, so cook up your best dish and share the joy!

In addition, the first 30 SingSoc members who come for the event will get a free Polaroid picture taken with Santa and his reindeer! Or without, if you prefer.

Iron Chef Competition

The ICSS Iron Chef Competition will also be held at the party, so here's another chance to show off your culinary skills! The title (and hat) of Iron Chef will be awarded based on popular vote, and everyone will get a vote, so get your friends to come down and support your dish!

Just in case you guys were wondering what the iron chef competition is about, it is most essentially just a simple potluck dinner! No need to sweat the details on how to enter the competition or how it will be run!

All you have to do, is just cook up your dish (at home) that you would like to share with your friends and other members of the ICSS family, bring to the potluck party and that is all there is to it! As long as you turn up with your dish when the party commences at 1800h, your dish will be part of the competition. Take up the challenge if you are game, or just simply bring your food for others to enjoy!

Guidelines:

  1. Not more than 3-4 pounds per person for which the portion of food is provided should be spent on the dish.
  2. If the current Iron Chef Imperial does not provide a dish at the subsequent potluck event (i.e., wishes to retire or has lots of coursework), the title automatically goes to the person with the highest votes.
  3. All forms of food and cooking will make the chef eligible for the title of Iron Chef Imperial. This includes roasting, toasting, baking, braising, steaming, broiling, blanching, boiling, , double boiling, poaching, pressure cooking,  grilling, steeping, frying, stir frying, deep frying, pan frying and smoking. No-bake cheesecakes are also allowed.
  4. Take-away and subsequent decanting of food from Oriental Canteen or any other established eatery/restaurant is not allowed. Violators will be mocked for the rest of their college and subsequent life.
  5. Hiring/persuading/blackmailing of celebrity chefs such as Gordon Ramsay and Thomas Keller is frowned upon. Not as bad if they are persuaded to buy ICSS membership.
  6. Sabotage* character assassination and smear and slander campaigns are strictly not allowed. Violators will be made to either do the macarena in the Queen’s Lawn Café during lunchtime (at full volume, with accompanying soundtrack) or do the intended target’s dishes for a month.

Gift Exchange

Christmas is all about giving, so this year we'll be having a Christmas GIft Exchange! Just bring a gift to the party, and you'll get one at the end of the night! The budget for each gift is between 3 and 5 pounds,  so don't go crazy and buy an iPod nano.

Make-A-Wish

We in the exco have made your happiness our priority, and we're going to make this manifest during the Christmas Party by having, for this night only, a Grant-A-Wish Foundation! Because Christmas is a time for miracles :) Simply write your wish down on a piece of paper, fold it up and drop it in the special Wish-A-Wish box. At the end of the night, we will choose three wishes and grant them!

So come dressed for the occasion, in red and green and Christmassy scenes, and there might also be mistletoe!

3. ICSS Chinese New Year dinner (22 Jan 2012)

恭喜发财,万事如意!

Every Lunar New Year, the 'nian' comes to steal your tutorials and eat your calculators. Or something like that. My knowledge of Chinese traditions is spotty at best.

But one thing we can't miss is the 团圆饭! And that's why the Imperial College Singapore Society is organising a Chinese New Year Reunion Dinner just for you!

Date: 22nd January, Sunday
Venue: To Be Confirmed

Brush up on your four-letter Chinese phrases, bring your oranges, break out your fireworks, and wear your qipaos and cheongsams! It's time for Chinese New Year!

Who wants to go for a 15-day holiday?
