Updates

1. Solemates... It's this Saturday!

Dear brothers and sisters,

"Do you not know the great news? Have you not opened your ears? Haven't you heard, help spread the word, the greatest event held in years!"

SOLEMATES - ICSS Major Event 2012

The time for preparation is almost over - the time to perform has come. To all members of the Cast & Crew, it's been extremely heartening to see the effort and sacrifice that you've put in over the past months. Keep it up, and be prepared for a standing ovation on Saturday!

Also, it's the last push to get tickets! For anyone who's still on the fence, pick up your tickets from any of the Cast & Crew now! Alternatively, you can also order your tickets online at
http://j.mp/solemate-icss. Your ticket will also get you a bottle of Tiger Beer and kacang puteh, so don't hesitate any longer!

If you'd like to take a behind-the-scenes look at what our Cast & Crew have been up to over the past few weeks, feel free to enjoy this video

Finally, please mark the 29th of February on your calendar, and make a date with the ICSS for our AGM! As mentioned, meals will be provided for all present, so remember to indicate your interest on the GoogleDoc in the article below. To all potential candidates, do send in your manifestos early, as they will be uploaded as soon as they have been received.

As Michael Jackson would say - this is it! It's the final lap, the last burst of fire, before D-Day on the 18th of February. Let's make it count and show support in anyway we can, regardless of whether we're in the cast and crew, or a member of the audience.

See you this Saturday to have a 'ball' of a time!

Much love,
Joshua

P.S In case you're wondering where the italicised quotes are taken from, grab a Solemates ticket and all will be made clear on the 18th of Feb :)

2. ICSS Major Event 2012 - Solemates (18 Feb 2012)

Imperial College Singapore Society proudly presents Major Event 2012 - Solemates.

Solemates is a story about a boy meeting a girl, although not in your usual fashion. Orphaned at a young age, Umber was taken in by the Ella family. At first, things were looking great: three square meals a day, a roof over his head, and a place to call home. What more could a homeless street urchin want?

But as time went on, the Ella family started to make use of Umber... He was made to wash dishes, do laundry, and even help the Ella twins with their homework! Bullied and mistreated, Umber yearns for a better life.

One day, as the Ella family does their grocery shopping (with Umber in tow as their personal porter), Umber learns about the Queen's Ball. Men from all across the land are flocking to win the beautiful Princess Cindy's heart, and Umber sees this as his chance for happiness! He waits eagerly for the day to come.

On the morning of the Queen's Ball, his twin stepbrothers, Mozza Ella and Salmon Ella, inform Umber that Pa has grounded him. Despondent and disheartened, Umber wallows in despair, stuck in his room in the basement (close to rock bottom).

Will he get to meet Princess Cindy? Is there a chance of a happily ever after, even in today's cynical world?

There's only one way to find out!

Date: 18 Feb, 2012 (Sat)
Doors open at 1900 h.

Tickets are £10 each.

3. ICSS Spring Trip to Portsmouth (25 Feb 2012)

"Dear Exco,

Solemates is over. What next?"

...This is what you'll be asking in a few days' time, when our Major Event really is over.

Fret not, because we in the Exco are known for our long-term planning ability! (Some of us, at least)

If you feel like you're in a rut because of schoolwork, labs, Major Event rehearsals (or you're just too plain lazy to plan your own trip), we've got the perfect cure for you. On the 25th of February, the Imperial College Singapore Society will be organizing a trip to Portsmouth, which, unsurprisingly, is home to a port.

"But, Exco!" we hear you cry out. "What's there to do in Portsmouth?"

Never fear! We've got you covered. Portsmouth is home to a fantastic shopping district, with prices better than Westfield, High Street, and definitely Oxford Street. If retail therapy's not your thing, why not try the huge variety of seafood available all across Portsmouth? Because, as you know, Portsmouth has a port. With fish. There'll be fish and chips, mussels, fish and chips, oysters, fish and chips, clams, fish and chips, fresh, whole fish, fish and chips, crabs, fish and chips, lobsters, fish and chips, and scallops galore. Don't forget to try the fish and chips!

Priority will be given to cast and crew members of Major Event 2012, Solemates, to reward them for all the time spent on rehearsals for Major Event, until Sunday, when it will then be based on a first-come-first-served basis.

It will cost 10 pounds for members, and 15 pounds for non-members. This price includes a round trip to Portsmouth, ad we'll be leaving school at 8.30 am, and returning by 8.30 pm.

5. KCLMSS Musical Production 2012: "Uniform: A Fable of Distinctions" (8/9 March 2012)

From the people who brought you Merdeka: The Rock Musical, Beauty World, Love Song For No One and In Pursuit, this year, King’s College London Malaysian & Singaporean Society 2011/12 Proudly Presents...

Uniform: A Fable of Distinctions

Synopsis:
This witty musical comedy examines relationships, ideals, and the search for independence through the lens of class separation.

On the brink of adulthood, two best friends anticipate their coming of age. Lay Kim, a typical Hokkien Chinese girl, has set aside her moving-away plans to take care of her parents' failing food stall. Liz, the English-educated daughter of a well-to-do restaurant chain owner, has decided that she wants individuality apart from her family and peers.

Along with their respective brothers providing humorous perspective, the girls reflect on their formative years to find answers to their problems. Lay Kim begins sifting through past conflicts that affect her sibling and her friendships, while Liz desperately looks for ways to achieve her apparently superfluous goal. As they go along their individual journeys, the girls begin to question the strength of their friendship against the strength of their own personal desires.
