Hi everyone! It's been two weeks since AGM and here's formally presenting to you... the 31st ICSS Exco! It is indeed an honour to have been elected by you to be the next Exco, and we promise to continue the legacy that the past batches of ICSS Exco have left us and to serve the society to the best of our abilities. In this week's issue of Kaya and Toast, do look out for an address by our dear President Hong Rui, as well as a short introduction by each of the Exco members! Next, there's a match report of the UKSSC Captain's Ball match against King's College last Sunday. Also, our Major Event Officer kindly requests for you to approach him for ideas for Major Event 2014. As for our friends and affliates, LSESU would like to promote their event: Dine-in-the-Dark. Do also keep a look-out for the several scholarship and internship opportunities, as well as the respective deadlines. Enjoy! Your (new) faithful secretary, Siming ----------------------------------------------------------------- Contents ----------------------------------------------------------------- 1. President's Address ----------------------------------------------------------------- Dear brothers and sisters of our ICSS family, Whenever I talk to my friends from other colleges, I often realize how much our Singsoc has done for us. For that, I feel immensely grateful. It is both a great honour and also a daunting prospect to be appointed as the President of possibly the most established and outstanding Singaporean Society in the UK. Faced with this overwhelming task, I am glad that I am not alone. Thank you 30th ICSS Exco for all that you have done. Your hard work has provided us with so many opportunities and wonderful experiences, and these shared memories and strong friendships will be deeply rooted in our hearts for a long time to come. Thank you seniors for your guidance and inspiration. Since the days of Sojourn, your efforts have helped us integrate effortlessly into the life and community here. Your silent acts have bonded us and made us closer together, and seeing you go out of your way to do these for us inspires us to do the same for others as well. And thank you every single one of you. At the very heart of the society lies our members, and without you, Singsoc would not have been this home we have come to know today. Your participation heartens us, your support empowers us, and your happiness motivates us. It is you, our fellow siblings in this home, who provide the constant drive and meaning for us to serve. As an Exco alone, our efforts are limited, but together as one family, our possibilities become endless. ICSS has come a long way, and we are where we are today because of our past Exco members, seniors, and my fellow batch mates. You guys have been an immense source of support which we cherish greatly and will come to depend on in the year ahead. Once again, I thank you for choosing us, for trusting us and for believing in us. Thank you for granting us this honour, and we look forward to serving you as the 31st Exco of ICSS. Chew Hong Rui President of 31st ICSS Exco ----------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Introducing... the 31st Exco! ----------------------------------------------------------------- **President – Chew Hong Rui** * View image: * <http://files.groupspaces.com/icss/files/695636/0oJsaLG1aQZVlRiBzDN9/hngrui.png?view&size=xsw> Hong Rui is a complex person with a dual personality. When confined within the walls of urbanization, he is a man of few words and tends to put on a cool and serious front. He is also a deep thinker who loves brain-teasing activities such as playing chess, Scrabble or solving puzzles like nonograms and Rubik's cubes. Outdoors, Hong Rui is a totally changed person. He behaves like a hyper-active kid, constantly skipping around and climbing up every vertical structure he sees. An avid rock/ice climber (depending on the season), Hong Rui deeply enjoys the process of mountaineering as he feels an unparalleled sense of achievement and calmness when he stands atop a mountain and looks into the horizon. Hong Rui loves making music too. When he is not daydreaming in lectures, he will be diligently writing notes on his sheets. Musical notes that is. He plays the cello, and secretly hopes that one day he can climb a mountain with his cello and play music from the peaks like *The Piano Guys.* With Hong Rui's passion for Singsoc and expertise in climbing, you can count on him to bring the society on to greater heights. Here's promising everyone a fulfilling and exciting year ahead! **Vice-President – Gabriel Wee** * View image: * <http://files.groupspaces.com/icss/files/695637/6K9fRitaB_yEQyAFenlm/gab.png?view&size=xsw> Do not be fooled by the army boots and tough look. Gabriel, as you may come to know, is a gentle and kindred spirit. He spends most of his time in the kitchen experimenting with gastronomic abominations in an attempt to recreate edible food inspired by all the mouth-watering delights posted online or simply a rumbling stomach. Gabriel has a knack for adventure that beckons him to the great outdoors. After getting addicted to the exhilarating joy of snowboarding during the Imperial ski trip, he regularly spends hours watching snowboarding videos and thinking about the next ski trip to come. As for other secrets he hides, get to know him to find out. Feel free to invite him out somewhere, anywhere, be it just a chat, meal or just simply join him at his usual hang out spot in Hyde Park for a fun game of touch rugby on Saturdays. Be prepared to enjoy the adventure of a year planned for you. Well, time flies while you are having fun, and so would the year ahead before you know it. **Secretary – Chan Siming** * View image: * <http://files.groupspaces.com/icss/files/695638/m0HKFDvAVIwM8d4whNJg/siming.png?view&size=xsw> Siming has few talents and few hobbies. One of her favourite pastimes is sleeping, and the other – eating. She loves sleeping. A lot. She can sleep for 15 hours straight if given the opportunity to. Sadly, life often does not provide her with the luxury of time and she finds herself having to crawl out of bed every morning (provided that the power of her very comfortable bed does not overcome her). She loves eating, but she can’t cook at all. What’s a typical lunch for Siming? Pasta, meatballs, broccoli… all dumped into the same pot. With some pasta sauce poured over them thereafter. To her, as long as it can be eaten, anything is fine! Siming absolutely loves dancing, especially contemporary. In general, Siming is a very normal, easy-going person who is definitely neither sarcastic nor condescending to her close friends. Not sarcastic at all! **Treasurer – Tan Wei Jie** * View image: * <http://files.groupspaces.com/icss/files/695640/jLKouIhPQuwxuKVAZb7b/weijie.png?view&size=xsw> Wei Jie enjoys exploring different places to experience what’s out there. Apart from his countless weekend out-of-town escapades in Albion (see foursquare <https://foursquare.com/tanwj>), he can be spotted running or inline skating down London’s undulating streets somewhere <http://www.royalparks.org.uk/parks/hyde-park>. When he’s not too busy with work, he would let his creative juices run wild. With his imaginative flair, he spends part of his free time on graphic design, web development, or building castles in the air a game of solitaire. Wei Jie strongly believes that his stamp and banknote collection should deserve some extra care. Speaking of collecting money, please lend him your greatest support when you sign up for the next event this year – make sure he doesn’t need to greet you with ‘Have you paid your share?’ **Events Officer (Major Event) – Ho Chuan Khim** * View image: * <http://files.groupspaces.com/icss/files/695641/SAQbz0MhHIUqoBPQd276/chuankhim.png?view&size=xsw> A car drives past, with its windows wound down, and music blasting.. and there goes Chuan Khim, moving to the music coming from inside the car. And he continues to dance, or hum the tune, seconds after... And you think to yourself, what bad singing and dancing he has.. Despite what you hear about his singing, Chuan Khim is actually quite good in singing! And dancing too, of course. Do not be fooled by his cold exterior (not talking about the weather here) and poor quality of voice, Chuan Khim's interest in music and dance brings his tunes to a whole new level. Because of his passion for dance and interest in music, it's not difficult to spot him (other than the above instance), as he plays his favourite tunes everywhere he goes, and shamelessly dances to them too... Aight, that's about all there is to him. Be there at Major Event 2014 to enjoy his singing and dancing okay? Hey!! Don't go! Its really good! No no I'm not kidding, it's really going to be fun and enjoyable! **Events Officer 1 – Lim Yu Zheng** * View image: * <http://files.groupspaces.com/icss/files/695642/eyhYLQdae7fiZM8wSe9_/yuzheng.png?view&size=xsw> Yu Zheng, or otherwise affectionately known by his friends as "Liam", is 1 of your 2 your friendly Events officers and he has quite a varied range of interests! He enjoys cooking a lot, and especially loves to cook for his friends. He is pretty proud of his horfun. He is quite health conscious as well, and he always wonders why his friends find that so funny. Yu Zheng enjoys playing a wide range of sports, such as basketball, frisbee and squash, as well as a newfound interest, snowboarding! He envisions himself being able to do ollies, 720 spin jumps, and somersaults (altogether, that is) on the piste in the near future. In his free time, Yu Zheng enjoys playing the guitar too. He embraces new experiences such as bungee jumping, skydiving, diving etc. These are all on his bucket list and he intends to conquer them all as soon as possible! Last of all, if you wish to know the story behind the name Liam, do approach your friendly Events Officer himself and he'd be more than happy to tell you all about it. **Events Officer 2 – Koh Yi Sheng** * View image: * <http://files.groupspaces.com/icss/files/695643/_rHcibdIT2yazulzywhS/yisheng.png?view&size=xsw> Don’t be surprised if you hear some sort of a thumping on the ground. If it’s peppered with a rhythmic clackety-clack of nails on the table, you can be certain that Yi Sheng is responsible for all that sound. He can usually be found head-banging to pounding rock. His passion for cooking has transformed the kitchen into his regular playground. Whipping up the most mouth-watering of all dishes, his roast pork has attracted people from all around. And if the weather is good, he bakes lots of cakes – usually round (I wonder why). Yi Sheng also owns a Steam library bigger than his book library, which is profoundly tragic considering how many have been left to collect virtual dust. Someday he will be back in the battleground. Someday after UKBound, that is. **Sports Officer – Wong Jen Yi** * View image: * <http://files.groupspaces.com/icss/files/695645/h42G6h6tIyO_Im0sZA9Z/jenyi.png?view&size=xsw> Jen Yi has a long history in sports, sailing, canoeing, windsurfing and table foosball -- unfortunately nothing very normal. That being said, she enjoys (which is not the same as being good at) most ball games (except handball). When not in school, she is either trying to beat the computer or trying to beat the deadlines. She enjoys eating, but only if someone else is cooking, and reads nearly everything (except for those certain types of magazines). She is looking forward to making sports (and games) more fun and accessible to everyone in SingSoc for learning, bonding and losing weight. She is an elusive creature, sighted only around 9am and 12pm in school, and even then only at a distance. Any suggestions, comments, feedback and (god forbid) complaints should instead be directed to the email: sportsofficer@ic-singsoc.net **Liaisons Officer – Chen Yiliang** * View image: * <http://files.groupspaces.com/icss/files/695647/tT2v_U0OC19p1j9aSGLJ/yiliang.png?view&size=xsw> Yiliang swears that being in Imperial College makes him neither a geek nor weird. He just doesn’t really understand why people hate doing tutorials! He finds it a daily necessity, something to keep him going. And nope, he’s not weird. Yiliang plays the bass (aka it’s a bass, not a guitar) and he often dreams of playing live on stage wearing a skeleton jumpsuit. He loves music and a daily dosage of music is once again essential for his well-being. And oh, Yiliang is your Liaison Officer! He thinks that he is well suited for the role. Extremely well suited. He finds a combination of his love for tutorials and music to being the killer combination of a good Liaison Officer. He promises to serve all of you well and to his utmost ability. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 3. UKSSC Captain's Ball - ICSS vs KCLMSS (10th Mar 13) ----------------------------------------------------------------- * View image: * <http://files.groupspaces.com/icss/files/695579/0DjbNBF9O9FoYPjj_Ja9/captains+ball.jpg?view&size=a600> Last Sunday, 10th March, the ICSS Captain’s Ball team faced the KCLMSS Captain’s Ball team in an intense match that had to be seen to be believed.
