Updates

Hi all, here's bringing to you the End-of-Spring-Term Special Issue!

With a record 3 Kaya and Toasts sent out within 50 hours, we hope that you are enjoying the spam as much as you are enjoying the newfound freedom. :D

Remember "Watch this space"? Well, "this space" has now finally EVOLVED into the unveiling of the ICSS FRIENDS, a league of extraordinary people who support the society throughout the year. Wanna know more? Read the full article below!

Please note that the Logo Design Competition is now for the design of the 30th Anniversary logo and not the official ICSS logo, and that the location of the DPM talk is yet to be confirmed. Also, the wonky SFP links should be fixed by now. If it is still down, you can either drop me a mail at
gabriel.quek11@imperial.ac.uk, or smack my head if you see me in school.

Finally, note that the server for the official exco emails is currently down. Hence, for all email referrals in this issue, we will be temporarily using our imperial emails until further notice. For those who have already sent emails to the official accounts, if you have not received an acknowledgement from us, please send it to our personal ones. Thanks.

Your smack-resistant secretary,
Gabriel

1. FRIENDS!

Dearest friends,

It is finally the end of the spring term and the holidays are upon us! At last, we have no more projects and deadlines! We are free, for the next 5 weeks at least. Nonetheless, we would like to present to you… FRIENDS of ICSS! Now you might ask, what are FRIENDS of ICSS? The FRIENDS of ICSS are people who feel the passion to contribute to ICSS in whatever ways they can. Here’s how you can consider contributing to ICSS!

F – Freshers!

These are the people who provide the first level of contact with the freshers and will most likely be in the best position to form strong bonds with the next batch of freshers. If you feel that this is the role for you, then read on!

Orientation Group Mentor:

Have you ever looked back at your past years in Imperial College London and wanted to change something about it? Wished somebody was there to tell you the do’s and the dont’s of college life? Now is your chance to right that wrong! We’re looking for seniors (Year 2 and above!) to come back in SOJOURN and make that difference. It’ll be a hands-free, don’t-sweat-it role in Orientation where you get to run with the freshers and relive the good ol’e days. At the same time having an OG to care for in the year to come, someone they can look up to and maybe one day call you Pa or Ma. :D

Orientation Group Leader:

Do you have an ardent interest in leading the new batch of freshers? Do you wish to have your very own mini family in ICSS? Enjoy getting sweaty and dirty on the lovely island just beside Singapore? Then you’ve come to the right place!

As an OGL, you will have your very own OG to look after and care for! J You will need to guide them along and answer any questions they are going to spam you with. The freshers will be your responsibility throughout the year so we’ll require your endless supply of enthusiasm, care and love. Be prepared to organise outings periodically to maintain the bonds formed between the freshers. So what are you waiting for? Be there or be square!

Secret Fresher (Apply as OGL):

Remember the feeling of apprehension when you first met your OG at Sojourn, wondering what you got yourself into with those geeky, bespectacled batchmates and seniors? Want to help dispel such anxieties among new Freshers and make them feel right at home within their OGs.

While essentially an OGL, Secret Freshers will play an added vital role during the initial period of Sojourn in helping Freshers integrate into their OGs. If you can be absolutely at ease mingling and chatting with new people, exuding warmth and making them feel welcome with your every word and gesture, it is time for you to put your charm to fantastic use!

R – Representatives

Academic Representatives:

Have the thirst for academic knowledge? Do you mug in the Central Library for hours on end, learning the fine intricacies of Quantum Theory of the Known Universe? Most importantly do you wish to share this knowledge with your beloved freshers? The Academic Rep must have the passion for teaching, to divulge wisdom of how to complete the past year papers before the end of Spring Break. You will nurture and grow the new intake of Singaporeans to become the smartest nationality in Imperial College London. Teach less, learn more.

I – (Faces of) ICSS

The Faces:

Are you confident and composed? Do you exude an aura of charisma and charm? If so, we want you to be part of the ICSS Faces!

The ICSS Faces will take on the role of resident emcees, and represent ICSS on stage whenever the need arises. This is a prestigious role that will allow you to be the ‘icons’ of ICSS, whom people instantly identify with. If you have a passion for the stage and a desire to interact and entertain, ICSS Faces is for you!

The Voices:

As the servant leaders of ICSS, we are keen on obtaining feedback on all matters of ICSS, regardless of importance. To further this aim, we introduce to you the ICSS Voices!

The ICSS Voices act as spokespersons for ICSS, providing real-time and from-the-ground feedback such that we as the Exco can better make decisions for the society. This role requires a strong commitment to better ICSS as a society and willingness to listen to and represent ICSS members. If you are outspoken and want to have an impact on the society’s decisions, join the ICSS Voices and contribute today!

E – Everybody

If you find that none of the listed roles suit you, then this is the role for you! For you; Everybody! As you may notice, Everybody is at the center of FRIENDS of ICSS. Everybody is what makes the society tick and without Everybody, there would not even be a society to speak of. So who is Everybody, and how can you contribute as part of Everybody? It’s simple! If you do not like any of the roles listed but would still like to contribute to ICSS, then come down and support us with your presence! Everybody has a huge role to play in ICSS and this is definitely the most important group in the society. Remember, Everybody is at the HEART of the ICSS! :D

N – Ninja

Are you a stealthy, sneaky stalker? Do you crawl in the shadows of the night, watching your hapless victims? Well, we’re not really looking for that but we do need NINJAs. What is a Ninja? You are the elite of the FRIENDS team, the first one in, last one out of the team. You love working in the darkness, out of sight of the public eye. YOU ARE THE LOGISTICS TEAM. Secrecy is your middle name as you move behind the scenes, aiding your fellow Man in carrying out the ICSS activities. The Ninja is a noble warrior, capable of working both as a team and an individual to face the unending odds and emerge triumphant in times of adversity.

D – Design

Looking for an avenue to express your inner artist amidst the black-and-white drear of report writing? Trying to pick up a useful skill oft-ignored in a science-y university? Look no further! Sign up to be part of the SingSoc (design team)! No experience or unique skills are required, just a willingness to commit and a love for the arts. All are welcome.

Responsibilities will be catered to your preferences, whether you like photography, video design or drawing. The level of commitment will also be entirely up to you. People will be staffed according to their ability and willingness to commit.

S- Sports Representatives

Are you passionate about sports? Do you want to lead your team to glory in Warwick Summer Games and Nottingham Games?

Look no more! Sports Representative is the role for you!

Sports Representatives will work closely with the Sports Officer in organising the sporting activities of ICSS as well as leading the charge for WSG and Notts glory!

2. Seniors' Farewell Party 2012

Hi fellow Singsoc mates!

It’s that time of the year when some of us are about to graduate and start an exciting new phase of their lives! To bid them farewell, Singsoc is organising Seniors’ Farewell Party 2012!

SFP is an annual party organised to provide an avenue for graduating seniors to gather for an evening of fun as a family, and reminisce about their time in Imperial. It takes the form of a potluck dinner with fringe activities, where members from all years come together and spend the night playing games and catching up :D

To this end, we are looking for two bold, charming individuals to represent Singsoc in wishing the graduating seniors all the best in their future endeavours by volunteering their services as emcees for that special evening. If you think you have what it takes, email Ting Wei at twl109@ic.ac.uk to sign up now!

To seniors graduating this year, whether you are a 3rd or 4th year, completing your post grad studies, or a 6th year medic even, you are ALL invited to the party organised just for YOU. To best accomodate your busy schedules, please fill up the following Google doc with your dates of unavailability, for the months of May and June:

docs.google.com/a/ic-singsoc.net/spreadsheet/ccc

Stay tuned for further details!

3. 30th Anniversary Logo Design

In the face of ICSS’s 30th Anniversary, we are calling out to the avid designer in you to come up with a logo to celebrate ICSS's 30th Anniversary. This 30th Anniversary Logo will be used in conjunction with the official ICSS logo and will be featured in this year's activities and memorabilia.

Some guidelines for designing the logo are as follows:

  1. Should embody the 30th Anniversary spirit.
  2. Should be distinguishable from but complement the official ICSS logo.
  3. Should not contain any objectionable content.

The process is as follows:

  1. Participants will submit their designs to xing.loy11@imperial.ac.uk by 18th May 2012.
  2. Shortlisted designs will be voted for by the society.
  3. The design with the most votes will win!

To reward you for your effort, the winning entrant will also receive a £30 Marks and Spencers' voucher!

We look forward to your participation!

4. Take a Break, Have a Kit-Kat

Spring Break is approaching and I am sure everyone will be using this well-deserved break to enjoy themselves and soak in the sun… oh wait I forgot that we are in Imperial here. The ugly truth is that most of you will either be found buried under your books in your rooms or be seen pitching tents in the Central Library and before you know it you’ll be wondering where your vacation disappeared to!

To give the mugger in us a break, we will be organising a Free-for-All Sports Session and Picnic @ Hyde Park. In particular, we will be having a Frisbee Tutorial for all those aspiring to throw a wicked forehand. If you’re not keen on having a go at Frisbee, we will also be holding other sporting activities such as Football, Captain’s Ball and Touch-Rugby.

If you are not so keen on sports at all, feel free to come down to soak in the sun and have a picnic with your friends or OG!

Please indicate your preference in the below link if you have not already done so. The date of this event will be confirmed in the next week or two once we have collated sufficient response.

5. Hall Write-Ups and Sotong Guide

Remember that time one year ago when you were young, lost and generally blur? It’s now your chance to help those who are now equally young, lost and blur as you were!

For the Sotong Guide, we are collecting anything you would like incoming freshers to know. Anything at all, from which lady is the most “kiam siap” at the QTR (with pictorial description) to the place where you can find the cheapest branded Royal Umbrella Thai Rice.

To help freshers decide on their halls, we will also be collecting the hall write-ups. Love the daily 50 minute scenic walk to school? Hate the way your armchair takes up precious real estate in your room? Love the very happening parties occurring outside your room late at night? Hate the lack of a nearby Marks and Spencers to satisfy your cookie cravings? We hope that each hall (Eastside, Southside, Garden and Weeks, Holbein and Willis Jackson, Bernard Sunley, Southwell, Fisher, Beit, Pembridge, Orient and Wilson) will be able to send a write-up to us to provide your unique, individual and Singaporean perspective on things.

Please email us any write-ups, or mini-write-ups on small things you wish to share at xing.loy11@imperial.ac.uk

6. Dialogue with DPM Teo Chee Hean

Dear brothers and sisters,

Our alumni, the Imperial College Alumni Association of Singapore (ICAAS), will be organising a dialogue with DPM Teo this coming Summer holiday. At present, details are still being ironed out, but here's what we have so far!

Date: 25 July, 2012
Time: 6.30pm
Location: TBC

Cost: Estimated 10 pounds (payment likely to be made while in the UK, before return to Singapore)

The event will also be held in conjunction with a series of celebrations for our Society's 30th Anniversary! More details will be revealed at later time. The last time that the ICSS-ICAAS had a dialogue with DPM Teo was 15 years ago, where he launched our old Society logo during the event. So this is definitely a chance not to be missed!

As part of a short survey in relation to this event, kindly fill in this form here.

Thank you, and stay tuned for more details!
