1. Message from the ICSS 29th Exco President
“If I have seen further it is only by standing on the shoulders of giants.” -Isaac Newton The first response that I would expect would probably be "Wa... act cheem one, use quote sia." To be honest, being an Imperial science geek (and proud of it!) and true-blue sua koo Singaporean, I thought such a quote came from a Spiderman movie. Looks like I'm actually quite far off. Then again, as I put my pen to paper (or rather my fingertips to keyboard) to craft this 'self-declaration', I found that those were the words which sprang to mind; words which described my present sentiments. It is both a great honour, and at times a frightening prospect, to have been appointed the President of possibly the most established, most professional and most outstanding overseas Singaporean society in the UK. With such an overwhelming task, it is easy to be swamped by the workload that comes in on a day-to-day basis, and even harder to rise above and look ahead. However, it is only with the efforts of many, which allow the few of us who make up the current Exco to be able to see beyond the present hustle and bustle, and to set the course for our Society. To you, the unsung heroes of ICSS, the silent 'giants' whom we have come to and will continue to depend upon in the year ahead, thank you. Thank you, for choosing us, for trusting us, and for placing us upon your shoulders to help everyone look a little farther in the distance, and see the way forward on this journey that we all share. We look forward to serving you as the 29th Exco of the ICSS! Joshua Goh |

2. Introducing… the ICSS 29th Exco!
Joshua (President) 1. Joshua sings. A lot. Especially while preparing dinner, as his cooking group can testify to. It's not uncommon to hear him belting out the classics while making pasta, or humming a tune from Bruno Mars while chopping garlic. Some of his favourite artistes include Nickelback, Jay Chou and Taylor Swift. 2. Joshua runs. Well, not a lot, unfortunately not as much as he eats or sings, otherwise he'd look pretty different from his current physique. Then again, there's something about the quiet calm of the park, the steady rhythm of footfalls upon the tarmac that soothes his soul when hitting the running trail. Eileen is one who is easily excited by small things in life, such as finding her favourite malted milk biscuits on offer or taking (what she thinks is) an artistic photo. Contrary to popular belief, eating is NOT the only thing she does in her free time. She also sleeps a lot, or at least think about sleeping a lot because she believes that more sleep will make her grow taller! :) "The average woman would rather have beauty than brains, because the average man can see a lot better than he can think." Luckily, Shun Ying (or Principal Luar, as she's likely to be known in about twenty years' time) has both beauty and brains. She's currently studying first year Biochemistry and spends most of her free time walking to and from Wilson House. Shun Ying loves dancing and is a huge fan of the Korean culture. She secretly harbors dreams of starring in a Korean movie, where all she does is dance and eat. Shun Ying knows the SNSD Gee dance by heart, and is most willing to teach anybody who pays in Assa vouchers. Being in a constant state of euphoria, Joel can often be spotted spending most of his time prancing around and giggling in the JCR. In his spare time, he fantasizes about flying with the pigeons across Hyde Park from Wilson House. Widely recognized as tall, dark and handsome (or so he thinks), Joel’s Aeronautical Engineering friends often view him as the poster boy of their course. Look out for his multi-faceted talents in the year to come!
YiJing is a huge fan of chocolates and rabbits; she can’t survive without chocolate for more than a day and as for rabbits, just check out her email address. She believes that when there is a will there will be a way, and she really loves the family feeling that ICSS has given her.
"Friendship is like pissing in your pants; everyone can see it, but only you can feel the warmth it brings." Before anyone asks, Huang Hong hasn't pissed in his pants since he was three, but imagines that it would feel pretty warm. He has time to carry out such thought exercises because first year Mechanical Engineering isn't counted, and the walk back to Bernard Sunley House provides much time for introspection and penance. Once home, he practices his dance moves and singing voice in the shower, which is, unfortunately, a little too cramped for the latter. He would, one day, like to go big-game hunting to try and bag something to mount over his fireplace (when he does get a fireplace).
From his past experiences as a competitive athlete, gymnastics coach, and part-time PE teacher, it shouldn’t be hard to guess how into sports Yuxiang was. Well, he still is, despite not as physically active since a “career-ending” injury. Nonetheless, he’s back into the sporting scene as your friendly and enthusiastic Sports Officer! Don’t doubt his passion for any sports, as he’s always keen to try nearly any sports regardless of how unusual it may be! Yong Wen believes he is what some would call a “computer expert” if they were nicer, or a geek if they feel nasty. An avid gamer and badminton player, he could be seen enthusiastically and passionately discussing topics of his interests. He is here to serve the great lads and lasses of Singapore! |

3. Thorpe Park Trip (RSVP by 20th March 2011)
Message from Fong: To prevent us from blowing a fuse by studying too hard, I was thinking of making a trip to Thorpe Park. A relaxing day spent on the roller coasters should be enough to shake off any exam blues (at least temporarily). I'm looking for more people to join us, because more people means bigger discounts and easier transport arrangements, and come on, who doesn't love discounts? Here are the details: Date: 14th April 2011 (Thurs) Time: 0830 - 1830 hours Venue: Thorpe Park Price: 36 pounds The price currently stands at 36 pounds, 24 for the entry ticket and 12 for the transport to and from Thorpe Park. The more people we get, the lower the price this will be, so help me spread the word and get as many of your friends as possible to join us! Please contact our dear events officer, Qin Zheng at eventsofficer2@ic-singsoc.net, if you'd like to sign up for this excursion. Places are limited and given out on a first-come-first-served basis, though, so be quick! All details will be confirmed by Sunday, 20th March. For those who don't know what Thorpe Park is all about, here're some details about the best rides: Stealth Stealth is the fastest-accelerating roller coaster in Europe, bringing you from a standstill to 80 miles per hour in a piddling 1.8 seconds. For all you engineers out there who deal with the metric system, that's an acceleration of 19.8 meters per second squared. Much harder than it first seems to keep a zen expression on your face when you blast off, even on your subsequent (consecutive) rides. Colossus If you think you can hold your stomach contents down or you're just a glutton for punishment, Colossus may be the ride for you. With a gut-churning 10 loops over it's length, we'll not be giving out any prizes to those who go on it after gorging on the park's hotdogs. All the same, much respect if you do it. X:\ No Way Out One of those who gets really scared after seeing the loop-the-loops and heart-stopping drops? No worries, because this may be the ride for you! In X:\ No Way Out, you go backwards. In absolute darkness. So there's none of that debilitating, knee-buckling anticipation-fear. Saw: The Ride If you've ever wondered what it's like to be at the mercy of Jigsaw himself, you can get a taste at Saw: The Ride. Even the queue up to the ride is scary, so you know you'll be getting your money's worth of adrenaline rush. Holding the world record for the steepest free-fall drop, it'll be a challenge not to smell the fear in the air as you make your way around this ride. For those who just really, really like scaring themselves, a Saw museum is just next door. Challenge accepted? |
