1. Words from the 38th Major Event Officer
Hello people! I’m *Churn Hym*, your new Major Event Officer. Its my
pleasure to be able to serve you as the up and coming MEO and I will make
sure that I will not let you down in my role. I will work closely with the
38th ExCo to produce an ME of similar standard, if not better, than
previous years. So stay tuned for what’s to come in ME 2021.
----
With that, the 38th Executive Committee is now complete! We hope to have
your support in the coming year, and we will continue to do our best to
make ICSS a warm and welcoming place for everyone :)
Lots of love,
The 38th Executive Committee
2. Team Sojourn
Hey all! Bored of Tiktok videos and #ChloeTingChallenge? Don’t worry,
Sojourn applications are opennNN! Come sign up to meet this year’s freshers
and expand our SingSoc family!
*Game Masters*: Design fun games (both online and physical), and carry them
out during Sojourn.
*Media & Publications*: Design and publicise Sojourn on Singsoc media
platforms, and take photographs during Sojourn.
*Ninjas (Logistics):* Getting and transporting logistics before and during
Sojourn.
**Note: Ninjas may not be applicable in online Sojourn. In that case, you
will be an OGL and may be asked to help in other areas.*
*Secret Freshers:* Blend in among the freshers, bond all of them together
and baffle them when you reveal yourself. Make sure you don’t get caught!
*Orientation Group Head:* Bring the entire OG together and forge new bonds
that will tide them over their next few years in Imperial.
**Note: All Game Masters, Media & Publications members and Ninjas will be
OGLs.*
**TENTATIVE**
*Sojourn Dates: 21st - 23rd August 2020* (If we can hold a physical Sojourn)
*Sojourn Dry Run Dates: 31st July - 1st August 2020* (If we can hold a
physical Sojourn)
Due to the COVID situation, the format of Sojourn 2020 will most likely be
either 1) fully online or 2) a small meet-up with just our own OGs if the
situation improves. Of course, the option of the full physical Sojourn that
we all experienced *(it may still happen) is *not completely ruled out. We
might have to change certain things (such as changing some roles), but if
we do we’ll be sure to inform you as early as possible.
We will be holding *Meet & Greet* sessions from *30th May to 7th June *on
Skype to get to know you better and chat with you. It will be a really
chill session so just be yourself :) You may choose to sign up together in
a group (maximum of 3 per group) or on your own. Do indicate your interest
and availability for a short Skype session via this form here (
https://tinyurl.com/TeamSojourn2020) by *27 May 2020.*
Hope to see you soon and all the best for your exams!!
>From your struggling-in-anatomy EOs,

4. K&T Reviews - Exams Edition
Hey everyone! It is your favourite review - Moo Vee Fan! *applause* Today,
I will be reviewing *Panopto*, an online video platform that my friend
recommended. Apparently it is very popular among students? Anyway, let's
dive right in!
Wow, the videos sure are... interesting! Not too sure why students like
them so much though...
*Pros*:
- I can sleep in instead of going to class.
*Cons*:
- I don't really understand what the presenters are talking about.
- No subtitles.
That's all for today! Stay tuned for the next issue of K&T reviews :)
LOL (Lots of love),

*President*
Hi everyone! I’m *Mein Yeak* and I’m honoured to be your President for the
38th Executive Committee. I am happy to report that your ExCo is working
smoothly despite the trying circumstances of our time. We are watching
intently how the coronavirus situation is evolving. Though there may be
changes to how our events are run this year, I promise you that we will
protect what SingSoc has come to be through the good work of our
predecessors: a happy place to make new friends and amazing memories
together. We will tide through this together and keep SingSoc’s flag
unfurled!
*Vice-President*
Hello everyone, I am *Chern Heng*, your new Vice-President. It is an honour
being elected into this role, and I will do my best to continue supporting

our initiatives!

medic HAHA. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to organise events for
you; I will make sure to do my best to make them as memorable and fun as
possible :) if you have any interesting ideas for events, please don’t
hesitate to drop Gillian or I a message or email! See you soon, hopefully
at SFP/Sojourn depending on the COVID situation :))
*Sports Officer*
Hey guys, I'm *Richard*, your new Sports Officer. I’m really grateful for
the opportunity to be able to serve SingSoc this term and will do my best
to make your time in Imperial fulfilling and memorable. My main goal this
year is to work on expanding Play@ICSS to make it more inclusive and
welcoming by including a wider spectrum of activities and encouraging
greater participation. Thank you for your continuous support and I look
forward to bringing members of ICSS together through sports and games!
2. Update on Future SingSoc Events
Due to the current situation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and government
regulations, we unfortunately have decided to *cancel* Kit-Kat, our annual
picnic held in the last week of the Easter Holidays. In addition, all
SingSoc events in London and Singapore will be put on hold due to the
lockdown/circuit breaker currently implemented by both governing
authorities. In the meantime, do let us know if you require any support.
Remember to take care of yourselves, and keep your eyes peeled for future
updates regarding our activities!
Lots of love,
The 38th Executive Committee
3. Nominations for Major Events Officer
Hey everyone!
After this year’s Leadership Elections, the role of the *Major Event
Officer (MEO)* was left vacant.
For just one night every year, ICSS puts up a musical – a production 9
months in the making – to showcase to the Imperial community our own
Singapore culture. From the scripts written to the dances choreographed to
the music composed, these are all original works by our members. Major
Event is a chance for members to get to meet other Singaporeans, and for
them to forge lasting friendships. As the MEO, *YOU *will get to oversee
this from the start to the end.
As such, we will be reopening nominations for MEO together with the
Imperial College Union By-Elections. Due to the COVID-19 situation, the
hustings would be held online on Zoom, on *17th April* at *2000 (SGT) /
1300 (BST)*.
Members who are interested in running for the position of Major Events
Officer may begin to nominate themselves. Please take note of the timeline
below.
Nominations open: *3rd April*
Nominations close: *16th April, 0100 (SGT) / 15th April, 1800 (BST)*
Manifesto deadline (ICSS): *16th April, 1900 (SGT) / 1200 (BST)*
Manifesto deadline (Union): *17th April, 1900 (SGT) / 1200 (BST)*
Candidates revealed + Manifesto published: *17th April, 2000 (SGT) / 1300

Thank you!
Your excited-for-elections Secretary,
Yuyang
4. Major Event 2021: Call for Creative Team
'O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?’
Hey everyone! Has SHN unleashed the inner writer in you? I am still as
uncreative, thanks for asking. BUT, if you have been inspired by the dramas
or books that you’ve been watching or reading during this period, then this
opportunity is for you! Rather than complaining about life, why not come up
with an idea for *Major Event 2021*? *YOUR *ideas, *YOUR *story, *YOUR *choice
of genre – all we ask is that you integrate some aspects of Singaporean
culture for us to showcase to the Imperial community and that you give some
scope for our talented singers, dancers, and musicians to shine on stage as
well! Please email your submissions to majoreventofficer(a)ic-singsoc.net. We
are looking forward to seeing them!
Words not your thing? Well, worry not – there are other exciting
opportunities waiting for you. We are also looking for *Dance, Chorale,
Music, and Cast Directors* to fill up the creative team. Head over to

5. K&T Reviews
Getting bored from staying at home all day? Fret not! It is I, Moo Vee Fan,
bringing you a review of my (current) favourite drama.
*Itaewon Class* features the story of underdog Park Saeroyi as he pursues
his dreams of becoming the top spot in Korea's food industry. Unlike your
typical rom-com K-drama, Itaewon Class does not shy away from
discussing controversial topics, which is a breath of fresh air. With an
amazing plot and an even more amazing cast, this is one show you don't want
to miss out on!
A word of caution though - this show is highly addictive, so you best be
prepared! I spent the last 2 days sitting in bed watching it.
My-eyes-don't-work-anymore,
Yuyang Moo Vee Fan
6. More Kaya on Your Toast
Craving something cold and sweet in this intense and sweltering heat?
Use *SUNDAE1

(excluding delivery fee) when you order McDelivery. Hurry - the offer
expires on 16th April!

Digest
Hello everyone!
We've come to the final, special edition of the *The Kaya & Toast Times* by
the *37th Executive Committee*! It has been an incredible term for all of
us in the 37th, and we could not have done it without your support.
Our usual procedures for handover have been severely delayed as a result of
COVID-19 and everyone having to head back to Singapore abruptly. Rather
aptly, this final issue of KnT is severely delayed as well.
In this special edition, we will conclude our term by introducing the *38th
Executive Committee* and looking back at the work we've done for this past
year. Each of us in the 37th would also like to *say a few words* to the
people who've helped us along the way; do bear with us for our long posts!
(Note: it is recommended that you read this issue on a desktop to preserve
the formatting.)
A big thank you to everyone for your support in the past year. Against the
exceptional circumstances in the coming months, we wish the 38th all the
best for their term and do continue to support the events that
they conduct!
For the last time,
Fu Yixuan
*Our time serving this past one year, Really, it has been quite a cheer.
Dissolved the 37th might have been, COVID-19 didn't let us ORD. Looks like
it's finally time to be a retiree Onward to finishing our degrees! *

2. Words from the President, Zhi Hang
Dear ICSS,
As the 37th officially ends our term and hands over to the next committee,
it’s a surreal, yet bittersweet feeling that one year has passed...just
like that. I can still vividly remember the time where I just got elected
exactly a year ago; time passes by quicker every year doesn’t it?
Anyway, I just have some final words to say, some thanks to give, and show
some love to the people around me.
I am firstly *super super grateful* & proud for everything that we have
achieved thus far. I’m just purely amazed at how creative we can be and how
we have unlocked our potential throughout our journey.
I said at the very start of our term, the role of President is the biggest
thing I’ll be trying. ICSS is such a big & reputable society, I told myself
that taking over this from capable past leaders such as Bong or Jacelyn
will surely be an uphill task. Right now after all that has happened, I can
proudly say that it *is *the biggest thing I’ve done thus far.
Now that we’ve finished the journey, running for ExCo was probably the
scariest, yet the bravest and most rewarding decision I’ve made in Uni thus
far. I’ve learnt so much over the past year, about myself, about everyone
and about the society. It heartens me to see that ICSS is still thriving
and I sincerely thank everyone for their contributions, no matter big or
small, that makes this society the place to be for our fellow Singaporeans.
I have a lot of people to be thankful for throughout the process...let me
first start with the 37th:
*To the 37th:* Thank you for embarking in this journey together with me. No
words can describe how I feel at ease working with you guys and I’m so glad
we managed to achieve so much as a team throughout the past year. From
admin to events to ME, I would like to congratulate everyone for doing such
a great job together. I know it has not been an easy journey for all of us,
but I’m glad that we managed to pull through! I honestly had fun throughout
and I hope you’ve enjoyed working in ExCo too!
To *Xian Fong*, thank you for being the most firm (yet quirky) pair of
hands in the ExCo. I am really impressed by your organisational skills
since the very start and how you are always one step ahead of everyone and
offering fresh, logical perspectives. Thank you for keeping everyone in
check. You are really one of the most valuable members in this team and we
can always rely on you whenever we need things to be organised properly.
Really great job in organising an unforgettable experience on the ski
slopes last year (I literally didn’t have to worry about anything much
HAHA)!
To *Jianing*, thanks for guarding our money so well throughout. My
favourite question throughout the term would probably be “Jianing, got
money?” HAHAHA! But in all seriousness though, managing money (and the
Union) is really not easy; a certain level of detail & dedication must be
put in and I’m glad you’re so responsible about it. People also don’t
realise it but you’re also one of the most cheerful people in ExCo!
To *Lydia*, thank you for being the creative member in ExCo. Things may not
have been the most smooth-sailing for you, but I really appreciate your
creative and logical input in ExCo matters. Thank you for also organising
fantastic musicals that are enjoyed by everyone; I think Waitress has the
highest number of tickets we sold so far right? Also, thank you for
consistently working on the dance team throughout ME, I can really see your
commitment and interest in leading the freshers!
To *Qi Hua*, thank you for being the “can do” guy in ExCo. From what I have
seen you always give creative ideas & execute them really well. I find it
admirable that you’re finding some fun in your job (ignore the pain of
organising them) and I’m really grateful that you’re part of this team.
Without you I highly doubt our events would be as enjoyable as it would be.
Your positive character helps so much in shaping the attitude of those
around you and I can always rely on you when I need a particular opinion
about something.
To *Jin Kai*, thank you for being a *very, very* reliable team member of
the 37th. From all the design stuff, FB posts, maintaining the publicity
channels, doing the sotong guide, taking photos, laughing over your
dad jokes, having to support Man Utd through tough times… I swear you
really peaked when doing the ME posters. Will miss your constant dozing off
in meetings! Sorry that I’m quite demanding at times, but I always had
trust that you’ll do your job well and you truly did!
To *Wei Heng*, my roommate & Aero buddy, thank you for being a
quiet-during-meeting, but when it comes to organising, you can come out
all-guns-blazing. I’m sincerely impressed at the level of organisation and
effort you put into your events. I’m particularly proud that ICSS has done
so well in the Sports scene this year; never ever had I imagined of being
WSG Overall Champions or having 100+ people for Hyde Park Picnic. Your
initiatives have certainly served Singsoc for the better so great job on
that! Thanks for also carrying my sorry ass in the Aero course…
To *Meenatchi*, I just want to say you’ve done a great job for ME! It has
really not been easy to work on this project for so long; I can sense the
number of hours you put in just to get everything in shape. Thank you for
keeping all the teams and ExCo in check just to make ME a success. I’m also
really proud that you’ve been more involved in ExCo over the summer period
and I really appreciate your inputs in ExCo matters!
To *Yixuan*, *heck I don’t even call you Yixuan anymore*. But yes, I thank
you as an ExCo member because you helped to settle PDT & secretariat
matters (minutes, K&T, etc.) Thank you for being so consistent and logical
towards ExCo, and for always reminding us to submit K&T (including this one
oops…)
But most importantly, thank you for being my pillar of support during tough
times; I can’t emphasise how much I have to be thankful for your
encouragement, as well as the constant reminders to vet my minutes & even
pestering me to eat at the right times. You also help to comfort me when
things don’t go smoothly and offer me the best advice to keep myself out of
unnecessary worries. I’m just so glad to have you by my side every time :>
There are also quite a few people that I want to thank:
My *Aero-gang*: Thank you guys for helping to support me during my studies;
I’m lagging so far behind so let's get our shit together hahahaha. I guess
I need to make up for lost time to hang out with you guys; sadly our
Italy/Scotland plans got derailed 😢 Always a great & fun bunch of people
to hang out with ☺️
[Joshua if you’re reading this pls join us more often :( ]
My *fellow 68B inhabitants*: Thank you to Esther, Jaynell & Wei Heng for
caring about my well-being, always poking me about ICSS stuff lol. It's
great to see all of us being so involved in ME this year and I hope you
enjoyed yourselves! I also really hope that I could spend more with you
guys more and let’s spend the remaining time in 68B fruitfully - although
sadly what a premature end to it :(
*ME Music Team 2020*: Thank you for so accommodating and being such a fun
bunch! I don’t even have any clue what to expect when I first joined.
Little did I realise that I got to make new friends in the music team. All
of you guys are really talented and I’m just in awe of what you guys do and
contribute to ICSS and ME’s success! Special shoutout to *Sean, Howard,
Jiayi & Merrill *for being the kindest souls and offering us the necessary
help!
To everyone in ICSS, a *BIG THANK YOU*! This journey would not have been as
memorable & remarkable without your involvement in it. I sincerely would
not have asked for a better outcome and I’m so glad Singsoc is still the
place to be for Singaporeans. For the freshers, I hope that you have
enjoyed your year with us and managed to find something you like and made
lasting friendships! For the seniors, thank you for supporting us with your
presence throughout and constantly believing in our cause! We sincerely
hope that everyone can continue to support the 38th as they rise up to this
challenge!
To the *38th*, all the best in your ICSS journey! I am very confident in
you guys in achieving something greater. The circumstances may not be the
same for now, but I have faith that you guys will overcome all sorts of
adversities! Never give up on your ideals, beliefs and goals and I’m sure
you’ll do a great job in serving ICSS! We’re all here to support you and
don’t hesitate to ask for our opinions on certain issues!
For the last time...“CAN WE DO IT???”
Your time-to-study president,
Zhi Hang
P.S. I will still manage the LIVE COVID-19 document until the situation
gets better. Stay safe and healthy! 😉
3. Words from the Vice-President, Xian Fong
I remember that at the start of my term, I was talking about being the
sambal to your nasi lemak. I hope that I have helped spice things up a
little within ICSS by trying to continuously push our boundaries. But all
the hard work by the Exco wouldn’t have been successful without the help of
many people.
To *everyone in ICSS* and to all who have come joined us in our events,
thank you once again for showing such unwavering support for us in coming
for our activities. I think we’ve tried to do things a little different,
stepped into new areas and let our creativity run wild a little, but you
guys have been so welcoming and enthusiastic. The cliché goes that the
strength of the committee is shown by the support of the members. And yes,
the support you have shown us is really heartening to see and gives us so
much motivation to do more for our ICSS community.
To my *batchmates*, thank you for putting your faith in me, and us as a
committee, to represent you in leading ICSS this past year. You guys have
been a springboard for our ideas, and you’ve always been so helpful when we
needed help. There were only 9 of us, and with your help, we had so many
more brains and hands and legs to do everything.
To the *Ski Trip 2019 participants*, you guys have been simply fantastic.
We mounted a large-scale mission of 178 people on a trip to somewhere among
the French peaks for a week. Looking back, it feels so surreal that it
actually happened. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves, because I sure did,
and hope to see you again next year!
To the *ME Props team*, thank you for being the team that did all the real
construction behind the scenes. You guys did really amazing work and it was
just impressive how everything came together for a good show on the final
day. You are an underappreciated and underestimated bunch, and I thank you
for your selflessness and hard work in making ME2020 happen. I’m sorry I
couldn’t be there more often, and I hope I have helped a bit by bringing
food to props sessions. To Kang Wei and Siting, you guys did good! We
managed to pull off a project that was so big it started out messy and
confusing but ended up being spectacular onstage. There were definitely
times when morale was so low but thank you for pulling through and
delivering!
To the *37th*, thank you guys for the immense work you have done over the
past year. I can say that we dared to step up to the challenge in improving
things and bringing new things to ICSS. We’ve had a lot of arguments and
intense long-drawn discussions, but after every one of these insane
meetings we step out as closer friends. We’ve survived it all! To my dear
president Zhi Hang, you have been an extremely disciplined person in
bringing the direction we’ve set for ICSS into fruition. The two of us had
clashing goals and styles and we’ve had a lot of friction between us at the
start, but we’ve managed to run things pretty okay and we’ve definitely
come out closer than ever.
As I step down as the 37th VP, I think I have found the answer to the
timeless question – “what does the VP do?” I now believe that the VP is a
strong pillar for the internal workings of the committee, and while the
President can be caught up with the liaison and communication with members
and other organisations – the outward face of ICSS – the VP is the
inward-looking person, continuously challenging ideas and pushing
boundaries in what we can bring to our members. To *Chern Heng*, I believe
you can fill these shoes as well, and be the meticulous and disciplined
person you are to bring ICSS to greater heights.
Now it is time to pass the baton to the next committee, and I believe the
38th can continue to push these limits and make ICSS ever more exciting!
All the best!
Your spicy-like-sambal VP,
Xian Fong
4. Words from the Secretary, Yixuan
Coincidentally, the 36th sent out their special edition KnT in Issue
06/2019 and here we are, the 37th, sharing our parting words in Issue
06/2020. What a year it has been!
*“Secretary after PDT then basically ORD already”* that’s what I was told
exactly a year ago. So firstly, Jia Wei, that was a LIE. Joining the 37th
Exco has been, surprisingly, the most demanding commitment I’ve ever taken
on (considering how mech eng already exists in my life), yet it has been
the most fulfilling, for lack of a better word.
I’ve edited and sent out KnT issues from all corners of the globe: London,
Edinburgh, Poland, Singapore, China, Morocco. It honestly feels weird that
from now on, I’m going to travel without having to worry about churning out
KnT on a Monday night from my Airbnb/hotel (is this what freedom feels
like???).
Being able to successfully conclude my term without losing my mind would
not have been possible without the support of the following people that I
would like to thank:
To my *housemates*, thank you for being the best support system I could
ever ask for, 10841km away from home. Eugene and Justin, thank you for
still coming to Singsoc events (partially because you’re obligated to when
2 (3?) of your housemates are in exco) and for lending me assistance
whenever I get overwhelmed (the ticket counter during ME o h m y g o d). To
Qi Hua, thank you for being company when we went home together after exco
meetings, though the exco talk at home makes me want to cry sometimes
because where’s the 公私分明 man. I have seen for myself how juggling mech eng
and EO commitments has taken its toll on you, and I have mad respect to you
for your dedication and for pulling through. Sorry for always chasing you
for KnT writeups when we’re at home. It’s been a joy listening to you
singing ME songs in the shower, but maybe work on getting the lyrics right.
Now you can finally stop kidnapping my boyfriend to pitch your spring term
initiatives to.
To *mech eng*: batchmates, seniors, juniors alike, especially those that
have claimed BOSS space as their home more than their actual homes, thank
you for always being there. (No, really, why are there ALWAYS Singaporeans
studying there). I may be suffering but at least I’m suffering with you
guys. To Eugene, thanks for dealing with my freak outs and cramming the
entire ME1 materials syllabus into one phone call with me. To seniors,
especially Andy, thank you for uploading your lab reports and data
processing on the drive. I would not have survived all the spring term
coursework if not the mech eng google drive. Now that I’m done with
singsoc, it’s truly time to get my shit together for mech eng LOL.
To *Acad Reps 19/20*: Thank you for coming to PDT, organising academeets
efficiently and altogether being a support system for the freshers in their
transition to life in your respective courses. I’m sure I speak for all of
them when I say that you’ve played a part in alleviating any worries they
had about starting uni. Did I mention that y’all have a huge appetite???
It’s frankly impressive how we racked up that bill at the acad rep
appreciation dinner.
To *Music team*: It has been a major pleasure being your TA in the last few
months, and I will always be in awe at the sheer amount of talent that
exists among you guys. Thank you for taking me in as a confused and noob
fresher last year, letting me fumble around on the drums. Most of all,
thank you for letting me experience the joy of music with y’all, something
that someone from a CO background like me (and a 25kg instrument) and no
proper western music training cannot really do here in London. And please
join music team again next year?
The biggest *THANK YOU* goes to my *fellow members of the 37th* for making
this journey the most memorable one. Some of you have really gone way above
and beyond what is expected of your role and spoilt market for future
batches of Exco. (Yes, Jin Kai, we’re all looking at you.) I have learnt so
much from working with you all and seeing the work ethic displayed by you
guys. From our first two meetings that were *SIX FULL HOURS* long, to
evening meetings at SMU basement over summer after most of us are already
exhausted from our internships, to fighting Union fires, to our last
meeting that was 5.5 hours long, I can say with confidence that we are all
truly dedicated to this society and want nothing but the best for ICSS.
Despite every complaint I make about y’all thinking too much into every
single decision and spending hours debating over whatsapp, I continue to
have mad respect for you all. It’s certainly not easy juggling the Imperial
workload while committing so much to ICSS and seeing you guys do it while
making it look so easy made me believe that I could do it too, when the
going got tough. There is truly no other group of people that I would want
to serve ICSS and do saikang with.
To my predecessor *Jia Wei*, thank you for showing me the ropes when I
first started out, and for always laughing at me for experiencing the shag
exco life. It’s time to finally join you on the other side. To my
successor *Yuyang
*and to the *incoming 38th*, thank you for stepping up in leading ICSS for
the next year. You guys have a daunting task ahead, made even tougher now
with the uncertainty over whether the events you plan for can even be
executed. But I believe I can speak on behalf of the 37th when we say that
we are always here to support you every step of the way!
To *YOU*, reading the KnT issues I send out, whether just this special
edition or every single issue: Thank you for dealing with my ramblings at
the start of every issue (and the really dumb funny jokes that I totally
did not steal from the internet). It has been an honour being given the
permission to spam the mailboxes of hundreds of people with one click of
the button, 27 times. Thank you for looking past the formatting errors I
hope you will continue to read KnT and show your support to Yuyang and the
future secretaries of ICSS.
I counted down to 18 March 2020 eagerly because while Exco has become my
baby and I am so truly grateful for this role, it was also time for the
baton to be handed down to the next batch. Imagine how tilted I was when
COVID-19 decided to mess up my handover plans and the 37th and 38th ended
up having to work together in crisis management and support. Now, with
almost all members safely back in Singapore and serving out their SHNs and
QOs, the time has really come to let go and move on.
To all the times I said “ORD LO” but then had to quietly sit myself down to
write meeting minutes or send out KnT (i.e. after PDT, Sojourn, ME, AGM), I
can’t believe I am really saying this for real when I say for the last time,
*ORD LO! *
Your genuinely-kaya-toast-loving secretary,
Yixuan
5. Words from the Treasurer, Jianing
Hello SingSoc!!
Thank you for the support you have given to the 37th, whether by
participating in our yearly events like Sojourn or trying out our new
initiatives like OpenJio! Everything would not have been possible without
the big Singsoc family, and I hope that you guys will to continue support
the incoming 38th!
To the *37th*:
Thank you for being such a lively bunch of people! I like how we grew so
much closer during the term and are more than just having a working
relationship. Thanks for all the laughter, fun and midnight meetings 🙃 You
guys are more than what I could ever ask for!!
To *Sean*, thank you for always replying my messages so promptly whenever I
needed help! ORD LO!
To *Merrill*, thank you for stepping up as the next Treasurer! I’m sure you
will do a great job! If you have any questions do feel free to drop me a
message.
To the *38th Committee*, all the best for the upcoming year! There is a lot
of room for you guys to explore and experiment with new ideas, so be daring
and try out new things whenever possible! We are always here to help if you
guys encounter any problems!
To the *props and backstage team*, thank you guys for taking the time off
to come down for prop sessions and playing your part in Major Event 2020!
We all appreciate your hard work. Major Event definitely would not have
been possible without you amazing people! Thank you Siting and Kang Wei for
taking charge of the team, it must have been stressful sometimes but hope
that you guys found it meaningful seeing how your hard work has paid off.
To my *housemates*, thank you so much for supporting us and always taking
the time to come down and support our events! Nicole, thank you for always
staying late to wait for me and helping us with the saikang! Xin Kai,
thanks for cooking whenever I get home late! Chen Sui, thanks for joining
us in Singsoc!
Your cha-ching-cha-ching treasurer,
Jianing
6. Words from the Events Officer, Qi Hua
It was a year ago. A year ago, that I read through the previous EXCO’s
posts about ORD-ing and about how much Singsoc had given to them during
their term. I remember feeling afraid of the things to come, afraid yet
strangely excited. Everything from then to now seems like a blur. Now, I
stand thinking of what to say for an ORD post of my own.
While preparing for the AGM slides, I remember having to think about
initiatives that we had attempted but never came to fruition. Sadness and
dissatisfaction were just some of the emotions that streaked through my
heart, opening scars of disappointment that I had long buried. I remember
starting off my term with planning a trip to Thorpe Park. A spectacular
failure. This rocked me to the core and made me doubt my own capabilities.
The Senior’s Farewell Party honestly scared the shit out of me, I feared
that I would mess this up and ruin what possibly was the graduating
seniors’ last event. 31st May came and I remember my awe as the seniors
streamed in and suddenly… things didn’t seem so bad anymore. I did another
slide that served to remember the events that we had gone through together
as a family. From Kit Kat all the way up to Major Event, memories of each
event snapped into my mind. To the people who have shown me their
unwavering care and support, this post is for you.
To the *seniors*, thank you. If I have seen further, it is by standing on
the shoulders of giants. Whatever that was made possible in our time here
as the 37th was made possible only by the hard work and dedication that was
invested by you guys. I had a mere glimpse into the amount of passion that
you invested into making SingSoc the family that it is today. You have no
idea just how grateful I am seeing you guys come for the events. When I see
seniors interacting with the juniors, I see friendships that transcend age
and academic year being forged, I become that much happier knowing that
perhaps, to a certain extent, the work we have done here as the 37th has
helped in bringing this family together.
To the *juniors*, it has been an immense joy for me to have been able to
meet so many of you and have the privilege to call you my friends. Thank
you for the support and participation from you guys for every single event.
Without you, the events would never have been possible in the first place.
To the cast, thank you for brightening up my Wednesdays and Fridays. Being
at a point close to burning out, I wanted you guys to know that you were a
key factor that reignited my passion for SingSoc. It drove me to devote
more time and energy for ME. You have no idea how excited it made me to be
able to work alongside you as a fellow cast member (albeit a small role).
To all the *Mech Eng juniors*, the frequent Union trips started to become a
much-appreciated respite to my week. I guess that being from the same 98
batch, hanging out with you guys really started to feel natural and any
senior-junior boundaries fell away quite quickly. Maybe, I should’ve been
here a year later :P (Also… Union twice a week?)
To the *incoming committee*, I can’t promise you that the road ahead of you
will be smooth. One thing I can promise however, is that you will find out
so much more about yourself and the people that you will have the
opportunity to work with. The 37th will always be here should you need any
help or guidance. I am excited to see what you guys will do as the 38th.
Don’t ever be afraid of doing something no one has done before. I have full
faith that you guys are going to do great!
*Endless roads, endless fun, endless laughs.* From travelling across Europe
to travelling up and down the stairs of our house, you guys have really
seen me through my ups and downs. To be honest, I had my reservations
living in a house with everyone being from the same course. This however
turned out better than whatever I could imagine. Thank you for the many
hours we have spent being the PUBG dream team (you guys have improved a
lot, really am proud of y’all). Thank you for all the times for sitting
there letting me bounce ideas off you. Thank you for being there when I
went through a rough patch and being there to cheer me on with a batch of
curly fries. From my semi-aggressive tendencies to my incessant singing
that can be heard through the thin walls, thank you for bearing with me.
You guys have taught me so much about myself and what it means to be real
to me. I would be very different were it not for you guys. Here’s to more
trips around Europe and the many more chicken dinners to come.
*“In closing, in a year, I hope that the 37th EXCO will be able to look
back and agree that we have grown closer together. An EXCO that did not
function just only within their specified job scopes but as an EXCO that
truly worked together as one.”*
~ Me, in my election speech, 2019
(Feels good to be carried once in a while)
To the *37th*, this year has truly had its ups and downs. When I think of
EXCO, I think of our 6-hour meetings, our run-ins with Union most of all
the friendships (and relationships) that were fostered during our term. We
weren’t the perfect EXCO, but I believed that everyone of us managed to
maximize what we did with what we had, and I think that is enough. Looking
back at the hope I had one year ago, I can comfortably say that we have
grown closer together overall. Many of you stepped forward to help when I
needed it most and that is something I will forever be grateful for. As we
move forward from here, I hope that we will be able to lend our juniors our
help whenever they need it.
Signing off,
Your loving EO, Qi Hua
7. Words from the Events Officer, Lydia
*It’s almost surreal that this long year has come to an end.*
*To SingSoc:*
Hey everyone, it’s me again :) For the first time, I’m not here to announce
an upcoming event, but to conclude my term as (one of) the 37th Events’
Officer. What a journey it has been, from the tearful goodbyes of SFP, till
the CNY reunion dinner. Many things have changed in the past year for all
of us, but I hope that ICSS has remained your one constant, as it has to me.
I would like to thank all of you for giving me this opportunity to plan
your events, and for supporting our exco over the past year. I definitely
have not been perfect, but at times that I struggle with putting
decorations up in time, or making it back to my post at the event, I see
friends coming to help as if it was the most natural thing ever, and I feel
truly grateful for all of you. At every gathering or party that we
organised, we have had help from all of you, be it in setting the furniture
back to its original position, cleaning up the rubbish left behind,
carrying heavy items around or other duties that we struggled with by
ourselves. You all make me feel lucky to have this community that supports
one another.
Thank you all for being the most wonderful friends, I feel honoured to have
been given the opportunity to serve as your Events’ Officer. I hope that
you will lend the 38th ICSS Exco the same amount of support that you have
given us.
*To 38th Exco candidates:*
I know that for many of you, it wasn’t an easy decision, and that you have
all thought long and hard about this amidst preparation for ME before
coming to this resolution. No matter the outcome, I am very proud of every
one of you who plucked up the courage to step up and run for the elections.
I hope that you have learnt more about yourself during this process, and
that you will be proud of yourself for having done this as well. To those
of you who have been (or will be) elected as part of the 38th Exco, the
upcoming journey will be hectic and full of curveballs, but it is up to you
to shape your path. If you ever find yourself needing a listening ear, I
will be here to pick up any distress calls. However, I sincerely hope that
you find friends in each other, and that the experience will prove to be a
fruitful one. Gillian and Leanne, all the best!”
*To ME Dance team:*
Thank you all for being such a wonderful team. I don’t think there are
words that can quite describe how proud I was of each of you when I watched
your performance from the audience seat that night. You have all improved
so much since the first few practices, and become almost unrecognisable
with all those sick moves and A++ acting as calefares. I feel very lucky to
be working with such a hardworking team. You guys are definitely better
than anything I could have asked for. At the risk of sounding too sappy, I
must confess to missing our weekly Tuesday practice sessions. I truly hope
that whatever you decide to try for in the future, you will have just as
much success with it.
*To Jaynell, my dance director:*
You’ve been a wonderful person to work with. Thank you for your patience
throughout the ME journey. I truly respect your work ethics, and dedication
to the team. I have been amazed by the wild ideas you have for the dance
items, and your ability to see the overall picture. I think I’ve already
said many sappy things to you, so I’m going to end this short paragraph by
saying that I sincerely hope that we will get to work together again
someday ^^
*To Jenny and Sky, my senior EOs:*
Thank you both for being an abundance of advice and guidance throughout my
term. You have both been inspirations to me.
*To Qi Hua, my working partner:*
I think it is safe to say that neither of us were exactly prepared for
everything that the year had in store for us. However, thank you for always
having my back. This definitely hadn’t been an easy term, especially when
both of us have course works due right around the time of an upcoming
event. In the end, I’m just glad that we made it through. All in all, I say
that this has been a good year. Good job to us :)
*To 37th Exco:*
You guys are really the best committee ever. I don’t think I can finish
listing all the moments that made me feel glad to have all of you. Many
thanks to *Zhi Hang* for all the times you gave us the affirmation we
needed in times of self-doubt, to *Xian Fong* for being the voice of reason
that offers a different view that we needed at times, to *Jianing *for
handling the tricky numbers and many transactions so well that we never had
to know exactly what you’re doing in your “Finance” folder, to *Yixuan *for
the quirky and amusing Kaya and Toast Times (and accepting my late
submissions), to *Jin Kai* for being an amazing Liaison Officer,
publicising all our events in amazing ways beyond our expectations, to *Wei
Heng* for helming the Christmas Party cooking superbly, and to *Meenatchi *for
saving my skin in our courseworks and bearing with my complaints.
We’ve had our share of problems, but I do think that we’ve done remarkably
well in coping with them together. I can’t quite believe that our year
together is over. Although 6h meetings are still a little too overwhelming,
you guys will no doubt be what I miss most.
Your events-loving-37th-events-officer,
Lydia
8. Words from the Liaison Officer, Jin Kai
"Lu Jin Kai posted in Imperial College Singapore Society Freshers 19/20."
Thanks everyone for giving me the opportunity to flood your Facebook
notifications and to take photogenic pictures of you at our events. Serving
as your Liaison Officer has been an eye-opening experience (ngl because I
have discovered Powerpoint functions I have never known while making event
posters), and I am grateful to everyone for giving me the opportunity to do
so. It has truly been a great honour, and I do hope that everyone would be
able to lend the next Exco as much support as you have given to us. To the
incoming Exco, always remember that you will have the support of the 37th
and we are always a text away!
To my *Sojourn Pubs* team, thank you for making the time to make a sick
trailer video and OG logos, and for taking pictures throughout the entire
event. As one of the big events for our freshers, it was really important
that the event went without a hitch and I am grateful for all your support
in helping to ensure that!
To my *Major Event* Pubs team, thanks for all the mad bantz and sick photos
and videos throughout the entire ME journey. Hearing all the laughter,
cheers and applause after the show was gratifying, but knowing that we had
so much photos to document our achievements was even more gratifying.
Here's to photog outings in the future!
To my *Photokakis*, thank you for taking the time and effort to help
photograph all our events. These are memories captured and frozen in time,
and are things that we will surely look back on in time to come.
To my *Exco*, it has really been one hell of a ride with you guys. From
having 6 hour meetings to fighting fires, from cooking up a Christmas feast
to brewing some dope teh tarik, there has never been a dull moment. Thanks
for tolerating my terrible dad jokes and for being such a wonderful team to
work with. Here's to more meet ups but for good food and a cheeky pint
instead of work.
ORD LOHHH,
Jin Kai, over and out
9. Words from the Sports Officer, Wei Heng
Hey ICSS,
Another year has come and gone, and it seems like only yesterday that I
started planning for my first ICSS event. I started my journey in exco with
the intention of bring people closer through sports and games. After one
year, and thanks to everybody’s help, I can safely say that we have all
achieved this goal. This would not have been possible without many groups
of people whom have helped me along they way, and I want to take this
chance to thank each and everyone of them.
*Sports Reps*
To Ethan, Howard, Eugene, Justin, Marcus, Ryan, Samuel, Chris, Jazlynn,
Kang Wei and Ian, thank you for doing such an amazing job. You guys are the
real heroes in ICSS sports. From camping at the ethos booking site at
midnight, organizing regular sessions, to dealing with my spam about
posting on ICSS, you guys really put in the work this year to bring sports
to the members and I can’t express how grateful I am to you guys. I can
only say, many many many many thanks to you guys, and I hope you’ll
continue to find joy through your various sports.
*Chorale 2020*
Chorale!!! Seeing you guys grow from scrubs who didn’t know how to read
music, (or sing), to performing in front of a sold-out crowd really warmed
my heart. Y’all don’t know this, but when I was watching you guys sing from
the side, every time y’all hit the correct note I would jump out of
excitement. Thank you for being so enthusiastic about chorale, especially
the tenors who are there for every session without fail. You guys made
being TA for chorale a super fun job with all your craziness. Hope that you
guys will continue to stay close in the years to come. Maybe join chorale
next year again :D
All in all, it’s been a great year serving ICSS and I do hope everyone has
enjoyed the activities ICSS has organized this year.
>From your sports officer,
Wei Heng
10. Words from the Major Event Officer, Meenatchi Sundaram Muthu Selva
Annamalai
*We choose to [do Major Event this year] and do the other things, not
because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will
serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because
that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling
to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too. -
President John F. Kennedy*
This quote, very succinctly summarizes what Major Event has been to me as
MEO this past year. Major Event has been the single hardest thing I have
ever done in my life and I am so happy it has been able to organize and
measure our creative spirit and hard work as Imperial College Singapore
Society and in the larger context, as Singaporeans in the United Kingdom.
It is a challenge that I chose to accept when I ran for MEO last year, and
one that we, 89 members of the cast and crew conquered on 29 February 2020.
I am proud of everyone in the production, especially the first years, who
have pulled through frustrating and downright depressing situations to see
it through to the end! And come September, I hope everyone is pumped,
recharged and ready to support the next ExCo and sweat through another year
of ME. As thanks and acknowledgements have been flying over land and over
sea over the past week, I would like to take this opportunity to
acknowledge the people that I may have not had the opportunity to thank as
of yet.
*The Men:*
That's you! The audience of Major Event 2020! A big hearty thank you to
everyone who spent the £12 and came down to support your friends, ICSS and
Major Event in general! I hope you guys felt that the £12 was worth it but
judging from your reactions on showday, I would say everyone had a great
laugh and enjoyed the show and all the elements in it. Major Event, at the
end of the day, is only as strong as the number of people that come and
watch it, so I am eternally grateful for everyone who came to watch and
support the event and instilled confidence in it. I hope you guys will
return again for the next iteration of Major Event no matter what shape or
form it takes (and who knows maybe someone will make a cameo in it just
like Mr 'TIMMY' QI HUA 👀👀)
*The Myth:*
In my youth, I was quite interested in reading about all kinds of mythical
beings - from Hercules to the Elves of Lothlorien to the Devas - but never
have I come across the likes of these 8 "people" who have followed and
supported not only me but also Major Event for the past year. I have grown
so much by just being in the presence of all of you and I am sure Major
Event would not have been a success if it were not for all of you. The
sheer amount of dedication, initiative and hard work each of you have put
in your roles is unparalleled and I can only hope that all my future
committee members will be as good as you guys. It will be a while till I
have my next 6 hour meeting with anyone but when I do, you will be the
first ones I will remember :).
*The Legends:*
In my term as MEO, I have tried my best to defend and preserve ICSS' niche
in terms of ME being a musical and I hope I have done a good job at that.
While the demographics of ME may be changing, one thing I have learned on
the job is that nothing is ever truly impossible if we try. I hope that you
guys, as the 38th ExCo, will carry the torch forward and keep the flame
alive for yet another year. Even though you may decide that ME as a musical
is not a sustainable venture any more and that is the decision you guys
have to make, know that I will be here to stay for another year and am
equally as obsessive about ME as Nat is so we are here to help if you need
in whatever shape or form you need it. Nothing easy is ever worth doing and
good luck for your term as ExCo as I can’t wait to be a participant in the
amazing events I know you will organize!

pets into the venue, but jokes aside, do look out for this script reference
on Saturday!)
Want to run for the 38th Exco and give back to ICSS? Don't forget that
nominations for *leadership elections* close this Friday, and approach the
incumbent Exco members for more details about our roles!
Looking for accommodation in the next academic year? Still looking for
internship/job opportunities and time is running out? Don't fret, because
our sponsors have got you covered! Check out the announcements by *Mapletree
*and *GovTech *below!

3. ICSS Takes Val Thorens
What better way to end the term than to spend it with family on the French
ski slopes? This year, we had a huge turnout of *178* skiers and
snowboarders!
Bruises and snowstorms aside, hope we've all had a great time searching for
sick mountain views and racing down the slopes. And for the beginners -
hope you've picked up a newfound interest in snowsports!
Our ski trip is an annual tradition - to spend an exciting week with
seniors, juniors and friends on the slopes. See you again next year!
Have a Merry Christmas!
Your VP,
Xian Fong
