ICSS 2017 - 2018 Journey Video Montage
It has been an honour for the 35th to serve everyone at ICSS and celebrate
the society's 35th Anniversary. We hope that you will enjoy this video
montage which captures key moments in our journey over the past year. Thank
you to everyone for your support and to all our sponsors for your generous
contributions! We look forward to opening the time capsule, which was
sealed during our 35th Anniversary Celebrations this year, in 15 years time!
3. Words from the President, Benjamin
With the election of the 36th Executive Committee, our term as the 35ths
has finally come to a close. I believe my fellow committee members have a
lot to say to everyone here, and I hope that you could indulge us in our
final words as your committee members in our final issue of The Kaya and
Toast Times.
To my beloved *Exco*, I don't think I say this often enough but I am
genuinely thankful for all the little sacrifices you've made to make ICSS a
better place. I know I have my quirks, sometimes perhaps a mindset that is
different from what is deemed to be normal or appropriate, and I'm sure
there have been periods throughout the term when you just wanted to
strangle me by the neck -- for all these moments I apologise; I am, after
all, learning too. But more importantly, thank you for sticking by the team
despite all our individual inadequacies and idiocies. These have been
tiring, trying months, but sometimes when I lie in bed at night, I think
about where we all began, how we always have fun at our events, and I
cannot help but feel a sense of pride when I look back and see how far
we've all come, as a committee and as a society. We make a good team, and
it has been my honour and pleasure to have served together with all of you.
I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who have
been by my side every step along the way. Firstly, to my big boss and the
forever-President, *Si Ci*, thank you for guiding me along this journey,
and for always nudging me back on track when things seem to go a little bit
off. It is always a comforting and reassuring feeling to know that in this
journey of being President, there's someone who has been through it all who
is ready to lend a helping hand.
And to my fellow *year 2 aeronauts*, thank you for being the best
coursemates I could ever ask for. I know I rant a lot, and seeing how much
time I spend with you guys I'm very sure you guys bore the very brunt of my
incessant ranting and whining. Thank you for always listening, for always
showing concern, for patiently hard-carrying me when I get so lost,
flustered and clueless when courseworks and revision come around. Above
all, thank you for giving me a family I had never asked for, from our
weekly AeroFoodieFridays to our adhoc celebrations to the kind of support
I've been receiving from you guys since day one... you guys are the true
MVPs, and know that in my heart I appreciate every little thing you all
have done to make my term that little bit more manageable.
Not forgetting too, the faces that have been around throughout my term, the
friends that, in your own unique and personal way, have rallied around me
at different points in my term as President. Even in a small community like
ICSS faces can still come and go easily, but I want you to know that if at
any point in time along the way you've popped in an encouraging word or a
pat on the shoulder, it means a lot to me. Never once in my journey as
President did I feel I was left alone to deal with my problems, and I think
that truly is the hallmark of a bonded and cohesive community.
And finally, *thank you ICSS*. When I first came here you gave me a home,
and then you gave me a chance to make this home a better place. One year
on, I hope I have not disappointed any of you, not just in my capacity as
President, but as a normal living, breathing and feeling human being. It is
truly my privilege and honour to have had the opportunity to serve as your
President. Over a year ago I said in my campaign speech that I would pay
all the good ICSS has given to me forward - rest assured, my journey does
not end here. ICSS will always be my home away from home, and *if anything
else, I urge you to join me in paying the goodness in the world forward
regardless of who you are or how insignificant it may seem. A little bit of
kindness goes a long way, and we can all always do a part in making this
world a better place.*
Thank you very much for everything over the past year, and I hope that you
can provide the same kind of support to the incoming 36ths.
It has been one heck of a ride, but it's time.
For the very last time, your Disney President,
<3ong
4. Words from the Vice-President, Douglas
Hey ICSS!
As my final post on KNT, I would like to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone
of you for supporting me, the 35th and ICSS throughout this one year! Our
events, our successes, and our warm heartening family could not have been
possible without all of you. This one year has passed much faster than I
thought it would have, with countless hurdles and bumps along the way
(Olympic slope was really bumpy too). I would say that this was one of the
most challenging phases in my life, but I guess that is what makes this
journey so much more fulfilling and enjoyable. Thank you for giving me this
opportunity to embark on this journey with all of you! It has been a great
run and I hope that you will continue to support the 36th as how you have
supported us. Thank you very much!
*To the Ski-Trippers:*
Hope all of you are already missing the countless of emails and google
forms I have asked you to fill in. Anyway, thank you for your help and
support in making this trip successful. Your quick responses and enthusiasm
towards this trip definitely made the planning a lot simpler and enjoyable.
I hope all of you have enjoyed it as much as I did! Maybe not the meat
quantity or the lady watching over the meat section, but everything else.
Maybe we will see each other on the trip again?
*To the talented group of musicians in music team:*
Thank you for committing x number of hours to music team rehearsals and
Major Event! I am really proud to be the TA to you bunch of insanely
musically inclined musicians. I have always treated music team rehearsals
as a short escape from reality into this melodic colourful world where all
we have to worry about is playing the right notes and not messing up any
solos. I hope all of you have found a special place in this music family
and let our passion for music live forever! Music Team again next year?
*To my coursemates:*
Thank you for helping me along the way every time I fall back on work and
pulling me back on track! I could not have juggled all this without your
support. It is really great to have all of your company every day in school
and jia you for the remaining weeks!
*To my housemates: *
Hey Fam! Please don’t cringe while reading this. Thank you for making our
home a place that I always look forward to going back after school. The
distance may be daunting, but the warmth and comfort of being around you
guys makes the distance worth traveling. Thank you for always supporting me
and ICSS events!
*To the 36th Exco:*
There will definitely be difficult times ahead, but just remember that you
are not alone. You are a strong team and there is nothing that cannot be
achieved with your collective effort. Many Exco batches have gone through
this and we will be there to support you. Your friends and ICSS will be
supporting you too, so press on!
Your thought-provoking Vice-President
Douglas Chan
5. Words from the Secretary, Tricia
It seems like it was only yesterday that I was in Luxembourg, writing my
first issue of The Kaya & Toast Times and clicking the ‘send’ button as my
heart pounded with excitement, and now here I am, writing my concluding
post for the final edition from the 35th. The past year has been
incredible; there have been low points but there have been many more fun,
rewarding and wonderful moments that have warmed my heart time and again
throughout the year and made this whole experience worth it. While the 35th
tried to build a home away from home for everyone at ICSS, we too found a
group of people we can fall back on in all of you. Thank you everyone for
allowing me to serve you and for providing me with so much help, support,
kindness and beautiful memories throughout the past year.
It has been truly enjoyable writing The Kaya & Toast Times every fortnight
and this is something I will miss doing after this final issue has been
sent out. Thank you to *all my* *KnT readers* for reading each issue no
matter how long they get, and for providing me with comments to let me know
that you’ve read an issue. It is especially satisfying to know that many of
you have found the newsletter issues useful in helping you to keep up to
date with our events. Thank you too to my fellow *ICSS Photokakis* for
taking loads of high-quality photographs and for allowing me to use them in
every newsletter :)
To my* Academic Reps*, thank you very much for helping me to reach out to
your coursemates for the Singsoc Farewell Party and for other
course-related matters. I would especially like to thank my *Year 2
Academic Reps* *Bryan, Darren, Vivian, Kenzo, Seeu Si, Mingrou, Alvin, Wei
Jia, Joel, Trina, Ernest, Fang Rui, Justin, Michael and Rick *for
accommodating all my requests particularly during summer, and for helping
me to make Academeet happen. It has been a pleasure working with all of you!
To my* PDT team of seniors*, thank you for making time to attend the
Pre-Departure Talk in Singapore, and for sharing about your course and life
in London with the freshers! It was amazing to see such a huge turnout of
seniors! Thank you, *Bryan*, for kindly offering to speak to the Masters
students! We had a huge number of Masters students entering this year and
the 35th would not have been able to address their concerns if not for you.
Thank you too to *the 34th* for the immense help that you gave me
throughout the entire process of organising PDT! Thank you, *Hui Chiang*,
for guiding me not just for PDT but also throughout this entire year and
for responding to all my questions so quickly!
To* Music Team 2018*, thank you for giving your all to Major Event 2018! It
was heartening to see the team transform from a group of strangers to a
family over the many rehearsals, and I hope that the friendships forged
will remain strong long after ME 2018 has ended. All of you are very
talented in your own ways and it has been humbling serving all of you as
the Music TA. I hope that you have enjoyed every bit of welfare the two TAs
have tried to give you and I look forward to our next cohesion!
To my *coursemates and Beit hallmates 16/17*, thank you for being a huge
source of support throughout this entire period. Thank you for turning up
at events organised by the 35th and for backing our initiatives to change
the way certain events are run. Thank you too for always checking on me!
To the *35th*, thank you for being the best team one could ever ask for!
Thank you for tolerating all my naggings about KnT or other random matters,
and for working so well together to make each event so fun, enjoyable and
successful. It’s been an honour being a part of the 35th and I am glad that
we have made the changes we wanted to see:)
Finally, thank you *Jia Wei* for stepping up to serve the society! The
journey ahead will not be the easiest but whenever the going gets tough,
take a step back and think about why you ran in the first place. Work
closely with your ExCo for there is strength in numbers and take the
initiative to help your ExCo. If you need any help, don’t hesitate to ask
me! I look forward to your first issue of The Kaya & Toast Times!
All the best to the 36th and I wish you a great term ahead!
For the very last-time,
Your grateful Secretary,
Tricia
6. Words from the Treasurer, Aaron
Thank you to all the awesome people in Singsoc for your support and faith
in the 35th! All food is on me!
Your Treasurer,
A-a-ron
7. Words from the Events Officer, Hua Chong
It has truly been an amazing experience for me this past year serving as
your Events Officer! It feels like it was just yesterday when I was in EEE
LT408 sharing the most embarrassing things I’ve done so far. I would be
lying to say that I have not looked forward to my ORD day, but now that it
is finally here, it seems really hard to let go of something that has
become a really big part of my life. I would not have made it this far
without the support of these special bunch of people:
*To my amazing Sojourn team of Voyagers *
A HUGE thank-you to Team Sojourn and all the OGLs for your support and
dedication despite your busy schedules and commitments! Shout-out to this
special group of Voyagers: To the *OGHs* (*Guan Ming, Rachel, Joejyn,
Nicole, Vishnu and Pearlyn*), and *Game ICs (Christine, Shao Kai, Alvin,
Ram, Michael, Wei Jian, Marvin and Kimberly) * thanks for stepping up and
taking on these huge roles! It will have been impossible to reach Donlon
(last time l’ll say it kayy) without you all!
*To the Cast Team of ME2018*
It is my pleasure to have been your “Teaching Assistant” for the past few
months! You have been a good-good bunch of crazy, amazingly talented
people! Definitely gonna miss our ridiculous warmups, unripe mangos, and
WELL CUT watermelons! Truly humbled and grateful to be able to share the
stage with all of you!
*To my Mechanical Engineers! *
The only people who understand that 0% doesn’t really mean 0%! To *Isabelle,
Daryl, Justin, Zhao Yang, and Daniel*, thanks for all your help and support
especially when I’m drowning in SingSoc work and Mech Engg! To the *Dancing
Mechanics (Kimberly, Douglas and Calista*) I apologise for uttering this
name out loud but thanks for being the founding members of our crazy
adventures!
*To the 35th*
It has been a crazy and hectic year but I am glad to have been able to go
through it all with you guys. To *Bong*: Thanks for leading us through this
journey and succumbing to our retarded requests like being Santa Claus/Wong
ShiFu. *Douglas: *Thanks for always having my back and making sure we stay
afloat together through ME1. *Carys*: Thanks for always coming to our aid
in our last-minute-event-panic-requests! *Aaron: *Thanks for covering our
asses in all the $$ matters and keeping SingSoc well fed in all our
events! *Tricia:
*Thanks for never getting angry/annoyed at our late Kaya and Toast
submissions! *Yujie: *Thanks for all your sleepless nights rushing photo
montages and spamming on Facebook just so that we won’t have to!* Eunice:*
Thanks for stepping up as MEO, guiding Jesse and the rest of ME2018 team
through this journey! *LASTLY, to my partner-in-crime, Huang Guan:* THANKS
for being my other retarded half, not caring if we embarrass ourselves in
front of everyone. Gonna miss all those summer Halo/Dota (I MEAN Sojourn
Prep) sessions! Couldn’t have asked for a better partner!
*To the rest of SingSoc*
Thanks for giving me this chance to serve as your Events Officer! This
journey definitely wasn’t easy but you guys make it all worthwhile! Just
like it has been for me, I hope that we have made ICSS your home away from
home :)
Your Shame-less Events Officer,
Hua Chong
8. Words from the Events Officer, Huang Guan
Wow, can’t believe it’s the end of 35th’s term already. A year has flown by
so quickly and though there were so many events organised, they all feel so
recent. I can still remember all the funny/epic moments vividly and all the
interactions with you guys. To begin, I would like to thank everyone for
supporting our events! Now, here’s some messages to specific groups of
people!
*To Team Sojourn:*
Thank you all for your hard work during summer period and your willingness
to give back to the society by making an impact in our fresher’s first
major event. Hope this year’s OGL overnight dry run was fun for you guys
too! Great job to game ICs and we really appreciate all your new ideas
(erhem pokemon weijian erhem). Do you understand? And of course, OGHs
(Pearlyn, Nicole, Vishnu, Joejyn, Guan Ming, Rachel) you guys really
stepped up to your father/mother roles!
*To my dance teams:*
You guys made me really look forward to Tuesday and I am so proud of all of
you!!!! It was nice getting to know each one of you and really cool to see
how much you guys improved and gained confidence in dancing and expressing
yourselves! Thanks for your notes and see you guys soon!
*To 35th:*
Last but not least, a big thank you to the team who made this journey so
enjoyable and manageable! Appreciate the immense support and dealing with
our last-minute changes and updates! Bong, thanks for always offering help
for every event and keeping us in check! Douglas, thanks for being that
available guy and supporting us through! Aaron, thanks for being super
reliable and always helping to settle food! Rasika, thanks for being
willing and bringing energy to the team! Tricia, thanks for being so
sacrificial; Always taking on the admin roles and being very willing though
you will miss out on the fun side of the events! YuJie, a big thank you for
helping with event coverage, publicity, and design! Carys, thanks for
always taking on all the saikang we throw to you and being super
supportive! And of course Huach, this journey is impossible without you
man. Thanks for being so supportive and a great partner. Won’t forget all
our crazy late nights and halo erhem HAHA.
Jiayou 36th! Hope you guys will enjoy the legacy 35th left for you and
please ask us anything if you need help!
Last time signing off,
Your tried-very-hard-to-make-funny-jokes Events Officer,
Huang Guan
9. Words from the Sports Officer, Carys
The past year has been nothing short of amazing. It really warms my heart
to see you all enjoy yourselves through sports. There were medals and maybe
disappointments but I hope the greatest takeaways were the memories and
friendships forged through it all. The whole ICSS sporting scene would not
have been possible without your amazing sports reps Isabelle, Kenzo, Wei
Jian, Ashley, Klement, Alex, Xin Yi, Andy, Rachel Loy, Alvin, Ee Jhun & Kai
Liang. Thank you for helping to organise sports sessions for your fellow
Singsoc friends despite your busy schedules! I hope you enjoyed yourselves
as much as I did (:
To Andy, thank you for stepping up to be the bball rep despite being a
fresher. I hope you continue to take initiative within the Exco as well and
help the rest out whenever you can! Take pride in being a sports officer
and never underestimate your role as an Exco member (: The journey will not
be easy but I have faith that you’ll do an amazing job! Don’t forget to
have fun in the process and enjoy the one-of-a-kind experience! And you can
always approach me if you have doubts / need help (:
To the ME props team, thank you for all your time and effort (and manual
labour), working tirelessly behind the scenes till late at night. You guys
have done an amazing job despite the hiccups along the way. Special thanks
to 小Nat, Daniel, Siew Han, Jia Wei & Ian for taking the lead in props /
backstage. Being a props member is never easy so thank you ALL for choosing
to be part of the team. I am incredibly proud of what you’ve achieved and
hope you all continue to support ME / Singsoc next year!!
Being in Exco has shaped my Singsoc experience into a fulfilling and
rewarding one. Thank you Si Ci for believing in me and encouraging me to
run for Exco despite my initial hesitation and doubts (: Also thanks JJ!!
for answering all my doubts & requests, and for reassuring me that I was
right for the role. And last but definitely not least, thank you 35th for
the past 12 months of late nights, saikang and difficult decisions, but
above all, laughter & friendship. I will always be proud to be part of the
35th, for daring to make changes and never losing faith when things don’t
go as planned. Thank you for listening to this quiet being, for motivating
me to become a better version of myself. And as if I don’t see y’all
enough, I can’t wait for us to meet up with no stress!! *coughs bong we’re
still waiting for your treat coughs*
Finally, thank you Singsoc for all your support, for giving me the
opportunity to serve you all. It has been one heck of a ride but I loved
every moment of it.
Your reluctant-to-let-go Sports Officer,
Carys
10. Words from the Liaison Officer, Yu Jie
Thank you *ICSS* for giving me this opportunity to serve you in the past
year. Thanks for supporting the 35th and we hope you’ve enjoyed the past
year as much as we did planning and executing the events and initiatives. A
special shout-out to *Ivan* and *Nat* for helping and guiding me whenever I
needed help and also helping to make things happen in the background.
Thanks everyone for enduring all my LOLs (Liaison Officer Lingos) and bad
puns and all my spams on your social media feeds (even if you ignore them).
Thanks for giving me the chance to be your Uncle Sotong, Karanguni Man,
LObang King and social media influencer wannabe (#icsingsoc). It was a
tough but fruitful learning journey and all your feedback and encouragement
have made this experience enriching yet humbling. It was a bittersweet
moment to look back at all the beautiful photos that our talented
*Photokakis* have taken throughout the year, and to see all the happy, sad,
frustrating and exciting memories captured. It was you guys who gave me
this *home away from home*. :’)
To the *Photokakis* and all the *photographers* and *videographers*, THANK
YOU VERY MUCH for volunteering your time to capture the memories of our
members with your lenses throughout the entire year. Thanks for *framing*
and *shooting* our members while dealing with all the *crop* during
post-processing while not losing your *focus*. Often, your efforts are
underappreciated, unnoticed and definitely *underexposed* but you guys did
not complain and continue to work hard to bring smiles to our members after
each event. You were also not able to enjoy our events fully with the
photography/videography responsibilities. A really big thank you for all
these sacrifices and please continue to believe that when people ask, “Erm,
can help take photo for us?” they actually mean, “I really appreciate your
photography skills, please take a photo for us. :)”
To *Celine*, thanks for taking up this challenge as the next LO! It is
going to be a tough journey ahead, to juggle the different job scopes of
the LO while focusing on the publishing of the next Retrospect. But I
completely believe that you have what it takes to complete this challenge
well, bringing your own witty and creative twist to the things that you do.
Please know that you are not in this alone and we are here to help you out.
Believe in yourself and believe in your Exco and eventual Retrospect
team. Looking
forward to a fun year ahead with Celine making her Mark as the new LO!
To the *35th*, thanks for being an *EXceptional* and *COmpetent* bunch, all
of you have made this journey *EXtraordinary* and *COmplete*! Too hungry to
write anything more, but you guys get my feelings hor….still waiting for
our *EXpensive* meal from our very *COmpassionate* Bong.
Your ORD-*LO* (gonna kenna reservist to do Retrospect) Liaison Officer,
Yu Jie
P.S. I hear your mega sigh of relief…YAY no more Lim Yu Jie posted in your
Facebook group…nope it’s not over…“Celine Mark has just posted on Imperial
College Singapore Society” :P
11. Words from the Major Event Officer, Rasika
Time passed by very strangely this year – it felt like I’d spent an
eternity preparing for Major Event and then, in the blink of an eye, both
the show and the 35th ExCo’s term were over. I am so grateful for the
opportunity that SingSoc gave me to help pay back for everything it has
given me. More importantly, I want to take a moment to thank everyone whose
hard work, dedication and support was vital to getting this year’s show on
the road.
*To the 35th*
You guys were the best team and I am so glad to have worked with you all
this year. I was so inexperienced going into this, and your guidance has
been invaluable to me. We’ve had to deal with a lot of things this year,
not all of which we could foresee, but we made it through just fine and now
we’re free! I think I might actually really miss all our long meetings (or
maybe just the snacks HAHAHA), so here’s to all the stressful and all the
fun times that we had xx
*To my Creative Team *
I’ve already told you guys how grateful I am for all your hard work this
year, but I might never say it enough. We really took on an ambitious task
with TIWY, but despite so many things happening that we couldn’t control,
we put up a show to be proud of! It’s been a phenomenal run with you guys
and I hope you guys enjoyed it (and don’t hate ME after all the headaches
it’s caused you this year). P.S. Nat – ME 2019 yeah?
*To the ME team *
YOU GUYS ROCKED IT!!! We would never have been able to put up such a
wonderful show if so many of you hadn’t dedicated your time to rehearsals
these past few months. I hope you all cherish the beautiful memories,
friendships and photos that this journey has given you, and I hope to see
you guys again on stage or in the audience at ME 2019!
*To Jasper*
You were right about this job – it takes a lot out of you but at the same
time it’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. Thank you for always
being there for me when I was pestering you with questions, your advice and
encouragement has meant so much. And cheers for actually coming back to be
a part of ME 2018, that was incredible!
Well, that’s all from me then. All the best to the 36th, I wish you a great
year ahead and I can’t wait to see what you have in store for ICSS and ME!
Signing off for the last time,
Your MEWS-filled MEO,
Rasika

1. Post-Major Event 2018
ICSS was proud to stage *Major Event 2018: The Infinite Wallace Young* on
the 24 February 2018 at the Imperial College Great Hall.
A *tribute to Major Event over the years* as ICSS celebrates its
35th anniversary, this year’s production was a fourth-wall-breaking comedy
that explored the theme of finding yourself and writing your own story. The
plot revolved around average Singaporean Wallace Young’s rebellion against
a cruel Narrator, who forced him into several different stories set in the
Singaporean multiverse. The setting of each story fell into a different
point in Singapore’s history and gave the audience members a chance to
explore our heritage and see what Singapore was, is and could be.
Major Event delivered once again this year, with a script, live music,
complex dances and breath-taking props and sets that were all crafted by
our own members. Though our Major Event journey may have ended with our
curtain call, it’s heartening to know that the beautiful memories we all
made will continue to live on. Do click *HERE*

We would like to *thank the Deputy High Commissioner of Singapore to the UK*
for taking time out of her busy schedule to come down and support our
production, *along with our audience* who came down to watch and support
us. We would also like to *express our gratitude to the performers and crew*
who worked so tirelessly to make this show possible. We hope all of
you enjoyed your Major Event experience and we hope to see you next year!
