                        Updates
Hi everyone,
For those who went to Dover today, I hope you all enjoyed yourselves! Same
for those who attended the recently concluded "Who Boleh". Well at least I
did. Find out who are winners for the various components below.
The final event in our calendar is none other than our Annual General
Meeting, happening *this Wednesday, 27th February*. This is arguably one of
our most significant events, because no matter how many important events
may have already taken place throughout the year, this is the one which
determines the direction and nature of these events, and ultimately also
the direction and nature of the society itself. I strongly urge all members
to come down, make your voices heard and claim your stake in the society by
exercising your member rights. To better prepare yourself for what will be
happening, please take a look at the updated agenda. Also, sign up now! For
the deadline for registration (including the free meals) is tomorrow, *24th
February, Sunday*.
In addition, for those who are willing to take on the responsibility of
managing the society, please take note that you will be required to make a
short speech about yourself, why you are running, what you can bring to the
society, and why you think you are suitable for this job. Of course, these
are just guidelines, but it will help voters (especially those who do not
know you), to make a better decision. To help you prepare, the speech
durations have been given below, subject to change on the day itself. For
further updates, please refer to our website and our Facebook page, with
links below. Please remember that, as above, the deadline for manifesto
submission is tomorrow, *24th February, Sunday*! If you are still
considering, know that the best you can do is to go for it and let the
society decide, and that the worst-case situation is that the society loses
a capable potential candidate. If you truly have the society's interests at
heart, please, it is time to step forward.
Finally, in the careers section, the SIA deadline has been extended to *26th
February, Tuesday*.
Your faithful secretary,
Gabriel

 1. ICSS Annual General Meeting 2013
Hi everyone!
The agenda for the meeting has been updated. Please take some time to look
at it. Additionally, potential candidates are advised to prepare a short
speech of the duration specified at the end of this post. As this is the
final issue of Kaya & Toast before the AGM, please refer to the dedicated

page<http://e.groupspaces.com/click/2ybxr-1ez6m-17rta6izpj?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.fa…>for
updates.
The meeting details are as follows:
*Date: 27th February (Wednesday)*
*Time: 12:30pm onwards*
*Venue: RSM LT G20*
*Agenda:** **Agenda .
pdf<http://e.groupspaces.com/click/2ybxr-1ez6m-17rta6izpj?u=http%3A%2F%2Ffiles.…>
Rough Programme: Registration and lunch will commence at 12:30pm, followed
by our annual report and general elections. Dinner will be at 6:30pm, and
elections will continue until all positions are filled.*
Note that *only ICSS members can attend* this meeting, and that *lunch and
dinner will be provided* for those who register with us online. Simply fill
up this form<http://e.groupspaces.com/click/2ybxr-1ez6m-17rta6izpj?u=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.…>
.
*Nominations and submission of manifestos are now open*! For those
considering running for a position, or want to nominate a friend you think
is suitable, please read the following carefully:
*Candidacy Eligibility Criteria*
To run for office, you must be a full member of the ICSS. Other than that,
there is no restriction on year of study, except that you must not be
graduating or leaving Imperial at the end of the academic year, as you
should complete a year-long term.
*Nomination Criteria *
Once again, only full members can nominate people to run for office.
Moreover, *self-nominations are not allowed*. Plus, if you are running for
a position, you cannot nominate someone for that same position. Finally,
note that the *nominator must be present at the elections*, and *each
nomination needs to be seconded* at the election itself by at least 2 full
members *who are similarly not running for that same position*.
Now that all the restrictions are clearly stated above, how does one go
about running for the Exco or nominating someone?
*To Nominate Someone*
Simply send an email to agm2013(a)ic-singsoc.net with the following details:
   1. Your membership number (i.e. membership no. of nominator)
   2. Your name
   3. Your contact no.
   4. Your email address
   5. Name of nominee
   6. Contact no. of nominee
   7. Email address of nominee
   8. Position that you wish the nominee to run for
Once the nomination has been received by us, we will contact the nominee to
get his/her agreement, before *publishing the names of both the nominator
and the nominee* onto our website. Note that there *can be nominations at
the elections* itself, similarly requiring at least 2 seconders.
*To Run for Office*
Firstly, if you wish to find out more about the various Exco positions, you
may email any of the current Exco for more information:
President: Ashley Ng – president(a)ic-singsoc.et
Vice-president: Bennett Tan – vicepresident(a)ic-singsoc.net
Secretary: Gabriel Quek – secretary(a)ic-singsoc.net
Treasurer: Ng Zhen Yi – treasurer(a)ic-singsoc.net
Major Event Officer: Phua Hsuan Te – majorevent(a)ic-singsoc.net
Events Officer 1: Lee Ting Wei – eventsofficer1(a)ic-singsoc.net
Events Officer 2: Tan Qian Wen – eventsofficer2(a)ic-singsoc.net
Sports Officer: Teo Kai Qin – sportsofficer(a)ic-singsoc.net
Liaisons Officer: Loy Xing Kai – liaisonsofficer(a)ic-singsoc.net
Alternatively, you can refer to our
constitution<http://e.groupspaces.com/click/2ybxr-1ez6m-17rta6izpj?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.u…>
.
Secondly, it is highly recommended that all candidates who wish to run for
office *submit a manifesto* that we will publish on our website within
48hrs of us acknowledging receipt. This is so that members can find out
more about what you candidates are like and what you stand for. Manifestos
should be submitted to agm2013(a)ic-singsoc.net *by 24th Feb 2359 hrs*. This
will allow us enough time to have them printed for those at the AGM. The
manifestos must contain the following:
   1. Your name
   2. The position you are running for
   3. Your picture
There will be no restrictions on page length. As a guide, your manifesto is
a personal statement that explains why you are will be suitable for the
position. However, *submission of a manifesto does not guarantee a
nomination*, and a nomination will still be required as explained above.
Thirdly, all candidates who are running will be required to give a short
speech at the elections. Those running for the positions of President and
Vice-President should prepare to speak for *5 minutes*, and the rest should
prepare for a *3 minute* speech. However, these *timings are subject to
change* on the day itself depending on time considerations.
More information to come! Good luck to all interested candidates and see
you all at AGM!
Regards,
The 30th Exco

 5. Major Event 2013: Homecoming
It feels like yesterday that we were all on stage, standing before a full
house, accepting the tumultuous applause of the audience. Major Event 2013

in our hearts. Each moment is precious, and unfortunately not every single
one can be fully captured. For those who wish to reminiscence and store
this experience in a less temporal way, most, if not all, of the event day
pictures are now available on
Facebook<http://e.groupspaces.com/click/2xdec-1ez6m-1bmcg8sa8t?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.fa…>.
As you look through them, think about all the experiences we have all

where our dreams take flight.

                        Updates
Hi everyone,
Major Event was indeed a night to remember. To those who came down, a big
thank you for your supoprt of the ICSS and I hope you enjoyed the show! To
fellow cast and crew of Major Event, great job everyone! I believe our
Major Event Officer has some words for all of you below.
Now that we are all hopefully more well rested and well on our way to
catching up with work (lol, who am I kidding), let us not forget that
Chinese New Year is this weekend! As such, we have our annual Chinese New
Year dinner tomorrow! The trailers are up on our ICSS webpage with more to
come! Note that the dinner will be held on the upper floor and we will have
ushers to guide you. More importantly, I'm proud to announce that we will
be providing free yusheng for every table! Also, there will be a table
lucky draw held promptly at 7pm with the prize being an extra 100% portion
of yusheng! Only tables with complete attendance at 7pm are eligible for
this draw, so please get all your lateness-prone friends there on time by
hook or by crook!
As the dust settles post-Major Event, many of us may ask "what now?". Well,
if you think that what the ICSS does is worth your time and effort
preserving, improving and developing, perhaps you may want to consider
running for the positions of Exco at our upcoming AGM, during which
elections will be held. This is a meeting which I encourage ALL MEMBERS to
attend as this really determines the well-being of our society for at least
the next year of term. Even if you are not running for office, I believe
everyone has a stake in the society and this is the opportunity to exercise
your right to influence the running of the society. Nominations and
manifesto submissions are open! Please refer to the full AGM post below for
the various rules and guidelines.
There have also been updates for "Who Boleh", especially for the gamers,
who have to now choose between DOTA and L4D2! We now have an event page,
the activities have been confirmed and so has the tournament style for
Captain's Ball. Note that the signup deadline has been extended to *12th
February (Tuesday)*.
Spring Trip sign ups are now closed, and we require those who have been
recently given a slot to make payment by *9th February (Saturday) 12 noon*.
Now on to some updates from other societies and our sponsors:
As part of the Distinguished Business Leaders Series organised by OSU,
there will be a talk on the 1st of March, with a good free dinner provided
for all participants!
Check out the King's College Musical, Imperial's I-Night, and Mahjong
Club's Mahjong competition in the posts below!
Finally, we have 3 updates in the careers section, with the addition of the
Project Firefly Essay competition as well as BP and ExxonMobil summer
internship applications.
Your faithful secretary,
Gabriel

 2. Major Event 2013 - Homecoming
Dearest Cast and Crew of Major Event 2013,
We did it. These 3 words essentially encapsulate the very essence of the
emotions that I felt on the 2nd of February, 2013. As I sat down in my seat
and watch the lights go dim, my heart rate increased exponentially. The
stage lights came on. The lines were delivered. As I heard the audience
reel in laughter at the comical moments and quote the quirky connotations,
those 3 words rang in my head. We did it. Though we may not have been the
Tony Award Winners of Imperial College London, it was the smaller things in
the musical that breathed character and life into Major Event. Jian Ting as
he rolled the tables over in "Where is Jimmy?", the girly whimpers as the
audience swooned over Jimmy, the rapturous applause at the awe-inspiring
"Circle of Life". Yes there were mistakes but they were few and far in
between, mostly buried by the immensity of the show and jolly good times
both actor and audience had that night. As the saying goes, do your best,
and when life hands you lemons you can proudly go "I tried ok!" But, I
believe we did more than simply try. We did it.*
*
*
***
Perhaps one of the most momentous moments in Major Event was when Walter
and Bailey embraced each other in their epic epilogues. As I watched Kan
Cong wrap his arms around Paulene with so much passion and love I looked
back and realized how far all of us have come. From the timid and shy boy
who suffers from stage fright to the confident young man on stage, I think
about how Major Event has molded each and everyone of us into something
else. The Actors, whom we could hardly hear a peep from in the beginning
have now a surreal sense of all the factors of production. The Dancers, who
couldn't tell one foot from the other now prance like graceful swans on
stage. The Singers, who melded their voices with the stage as they took on
all sorts of roles. The Musicians, who put together a charged performance
in a matter of weeks. The Set Design team, who worked tirelessly behind the
scenes providing the necessary logistical demands of Major Event. Ticketing
and Publicity, working day and night to make Major Event the sell-out crowd
that allowed the performers to feel the full furor of the production. I
look back and I gaze in awe at how we have come together, as separate
components, as separate teams and as separate entities, to form one
synergistic force to be reckoned with. To become one family.
The Actors. The Dancers. The Singers. The Music. The Backstage Crew. The
Ticketing and Publicity. The Cast and Crew. All those months, weeks and
hours that we will never get back, spent practicing the same scenes over
and over again, striving towards perfecting each step and each note,
painting all the minute details and creating the picture perfect publicity.
The sheer will and belief of each and everyone of the participants
reinforced my own drive as the Major Event Officer, to build a production
that would strengthen the Singaporean Society. There have been
shortcomings, there have been sacrifices and there has been soul-searching.
But no man ever walked alone. As quickly as one fell from the immense
pressure of Major Event, there were several others waiting to pick him up.
The words of encouragement, the shifting of roles, the extra hours of
practice, really brought out the fraternity and sorority of the Major
Event. We refused to give up. We refused to call quits. We refused to say
no.
I watched as the lights came back on one final time and the friends of the
Cast and Crew gush on to stage to present the gifts and good words I knew
that Major Event had been a success, not for me, not for the Exco, but for
the Imperial College Singaporean Society. As Bryan from the 28th came up to
me and patted me on the shoulder, he told me how Major Event had once more
been a wonderful success, not because we had done an outstanding show
(which we did!), but because the cast and crew were not simply standing
with their new-found friends, they were standing with their new-found
family.
Of course not all was glitz and glamour. On the behalf of the 30th
Executive Committee I would like to take this opportunity to appreciate
everyone for their incredibly hard work and determination in making Major
Event the success that it has become, and for your enduring the moments
that seemed to drag by in the endless rush of combined rehearsals. We
understand that some were more unhappy than others, like the Make Up team
whom we did not keep up to date on the change in timeline on the Show Day
itself. Things got hectic and they were given less time than they had hoped
for, but in the end we made it through the thick and thin together. So
before I go I'd like to thank you, each and everyone of you, for being a
part of this wonderful family that we have formed over the past few months.
It has been both a pleasure and honor to work with all of you and I hope
that you will always look back on this day and say to yourself. We did it.
Your Major Event Officer,
Phua Hsuan Te

This will be the final event organized by the 30th Executive Committee,
comprising the presentation of our Annual Report, and of course, the
elections for the 31st Executive Committee! This meeting is crucial to the
future the ICSS as we decide who will take on the roles of leadership and
responsibility within the society for the next year-long term. Details are
as follows:
*Date: 27th February (Wednesday)*
*Time: 1pm onwards*
*Venue: To be Confirmed*
Note that *only ICSS members can attend* this meeting, and that *lunch and
dinner will be provided* for those who register with us online. Simply fill

Finally,
note that *each nomination needs to be seconded* at the election itself by
at least 2 full members *who are similarly not running for that same
position*.
Now that all the restrictions are clearly stated above, how does one go
about running for the Exco or nominating someone?
*To Nominate Someone*
Simply send an email to agm2013(a)ic-singsoc.net with the following details:
   1. Your membership number (i.e. membership no. of nominator)
   2. Your name
   3. Your contact no.
   4. Your email address
   5. Name of nominee
   6. Contact no. of nominee
   7. Email address of nominee
   8. Position that you wish the nominee to run for
Once the nomination has been received by us, we will contact the nominee to
get his/her agreement, before *publishing the names of both the nominator
and the nominee* onto our website. Note that there *can be nominations at
the elections* itself, similarly requiring at least 2 seconders.
*To Run for Office*
Firstly, if you wish to find out more about the various Exco positions, you
may email any of the current Exco for more information:
President: Ashley Ng – president(a)ic-singsoc.et
Vice-president: Bennett Tan – vicepresident(a)ic-singsoc.net
Secretary: Gabriel Quek – secretary(a)ic-singsoc.net
Treasurer: Ng Zhen Yi – treasurer(a)ic-singsoc.net
Major Event Officer: Phua Hsuan Te – majorevent(a)ic-singsoc.net
Events Officer 1: Lee Ting Wei – eventsofficer1(a)ic-singsoc.net
Events Officer 2: Tan Qian Wen – eventsofficer2(a)ic-singsoc.net
Sports Officer: Teo Kai Qin – sportsofficer(a)ic-singsoc.net
Liaisons Officer: Loy Xing Kai – liaisonsofficer(a)ic-singsoc.net
Alternatively, you can refer to our
constitution<http://e.groupspaces.com/click/2w15t-1ez6m-1ne5k7s3te?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.u…>.
Also, stay tuned for more details that the Exco will be sharing next week.
More information to come! Good luck to all interested candidates and see
you all at AGM!
Regards,
The 30th Exco
