Updates
Hi all, here's bringing to you the End-of-Spring-Term Special Issue!
With a record 3 Kaya and Toasts sent out within 50 hours, we hope that you are enjoying the spam as much as you are enjoying the newfound freedom. :D
Remember "Watch this space"? Well, "this space" has now finally EVOLVED into the unveiling of the ICSS FRIENDS, a league of extraordinary people who support the society throughout the year. Wanna know more? Read the full article below!
Please note that the Logo Design Competition is now for the design of the 30th Anniversary logo and not the official ICSS logo, and that the location of the DPM talk is yet to be confirmed. Also, the wonky SFP links should be fixed by now. If it is still down, you can either drop me a mail at gabriel.quek11(a)imperial.ac.uk<mailto:gabrielquek11@imperial.ac.uk>, or smack my head if you see me in school.
Finally, note that the server for the official exco emails is currently down. Hence, for all email referrals in this issue, we will be temporarily using our imperial emails until further notice. For those who have already sent emails to the official accounts, if you have not received an acknowledgement from us, please send it to our personal ones. Thanks.
Your smack-resistant secretary,
Gabriel

1. FRIENDS!
Dearest friends,
It is finally the end of the spring term and the holidays are upon us! At last, we have no more projects and deadlines! We are free, for the next 5 weeks at least. Nonetheless, we would like to present to you… FRIENDS of ICSS! Now you might ask, what are FRIENDS of ICSS? The FRIENDS of ICSS are people who feel the passion to contribute to ICSS in whatever ways they can. Here’s how you can consider contributing to ICSS!
F – Freshers!
These are the people who provide the first level of contact with the freshers and will most likely be in the best position to form strong bonds with the next batch of freshers. If you feel that this is the role for you, then read on!
Orientation Group Mentor:
Have you ever looked back at your past years in Imperial College London and wanted to change something about it? Wished somebody was there to tell you the do’s and the dont’s of college life? Now is your chance to right that wrong! We’re looking for seniors (Year 2 and above!) to come back in SOJOURN and make that difference. It’ll be a hands-free, don’t-sweat-it role in Orientation where you get to run with the freshers and relive the good ol’e days. At the same time having an OG to care for in the year to come, someone they can look up to and maybe one day call you Pa or Ma. :D
Orientation Group Leader:
Do you have an ardent interest in leading the new batch of freshers? Do you wish to have your very own mini family in ICSS? Enjoy getting sweaty and dirty on the lovely island just beside Singapore? Then you’ve come to the right place!
As an OGL, you will have your very own OG to look after and care for! J You will need to guide them along and answer any questions they are going to spam you with. The freshers will be your responsibility throughout the year so we’ll require your endless supply of enthusiasm, care and love. Be prepared to organise outings periodically to maintain the bonds formed between the freshers. So what are you waiting for? Be there or be square!
Secret Fresher (Apply as OGL):
Remember the feeling of apprehension when you first met your OG at Sojourn, wondering what you got yourself into with those geeky, bespectacled batchmates and seniors? Want to help dispel such anxieties among new Freshers and make them feel right at home within their OGs.
While essentially an OGL, Secret Freshers will play an added vital role during the initial period of Sojourn in helping Freshers integrate into their OGs. If you can be absolutely at ease mingling and chatting with new people, exuding warmth and making them feel welcome with your every word and gesture, it is time for you to put your charm to fantastic use!
R – Representatives
[http://files.groupspaces.com/icss/files/356589/8coz340dWoRfRqef9iUL/R+-+Aca… Representatives:
Have the thirst for academic knowledge? Do you mug in the Central Library for hours on end, learning the fine intricacies of Quantum Theory of the Known Universe? Most importantly do you wish to share this knowledge with your beloved freshers? The Academic Rep must have the passion for teaching, to divulge wisdom of how to complete the past year papers before the end of Spring Break. You will nurture and grow the new intake of Singaporeans to become the smartest nationality in Imperial College London. Teach less, learn more.
I – (Faces of) ICSS
[http://files.groupspaces.com/icss/files/356595/BcxrVBdXp36uchvx_6i9/I+-+Fac… Faces:
Are you confident and composed? Do you exude an aura of charisma and charm? If so, we want you to be part of the ICSS Faces!
The ICSS Faces will take on the role of resident emcees, and represent ICSS on stage whenever the need arises. This is a prestigious role that will allow you to be the ‘icons’ of ICSS, whom people instantly identify with. If you have a passion for the stage and a desire to interact and entertain, ICSS Faces is for you!
The Voices:
As the servant leaders of ICSS, we are keen on obtaining feedback on all matters of ICSS, regardless of importance. To further this aim, we introduce to you the ICSS Voices!
The ICSS Voices act as spokespersons for ICSS, providing real-time and from-the-ground feedback such that we as the Exco can better make decisions for the society. This role requires a strong commitment to better ICSS as a society and willingness to listen to and represent ICSS members. If you are outspoken and want to have an impact on the society’s decisions, join the ICSS Voices and contribute today!
E – Everybody
[http://files.groupspaces.com/icss/files/356591/I3mJQzkupRsFoOkciuqq/E+-+Eve…]
If you find that none of the listed roles suit you, then this is the role for you! For you; Everybody! As you may notice, Everybody is at the center of FRIENDS of ICSS. Everybody is what makes the society tick and without Everybody, there would not even be a society to speak of. So who is Everybody, and how can you contribute as part of Everybody? It’s simple! If you do not like any of the roles listed but would still like to contribute to ICSS, then come down and support us with your presence! Everybody has a huge role to play in ICSS and this is definitely the most important group in the society. Remember, Everybody is at the HEART of the ICSS! :D
N – Ninja
[http://files.groupspaces.com/icss/files/356592/tj9zSl8Yh2qCkyvMbgfc/N+-+Nin…]
Are you a stealthy, sneaky stalker? Do you crawl in the shadows of the night, watching your hapless victims? Well, we’re not really looking for that but we do need NINJAs. What is a Ninja? You are the elite of the FRIENDS team, the first one in, last one out of the team. You love working in the darkness, out of sight of the public eye. YOU ARE THE LOGISTICS TEAM. Secrecy is your middle name as you move behind the scenes, aiding your fellow Man in carrying out the ICSS activities. The Ninja is a noble warrior, capable of working both as a team and an individual to face the unending odds and emerge triumphant in times of adversity.
D – Design
L[http://files.groupspaces.com/icss/files/356593/8LXJsstqsqRRAFxLLejf/D+-+D… for an avenue to express your inner artist amidst the black-and-white drear of report writing? Trying to pick up a useful skill oft-ignored in a science-y university? Look no further! Sign up to be part of the SingSoc (design team)! No experience or unique skills are required, just a willingness to commit and a love for the arts. All are welcome.
Responsibilities will be catered to your preferences, whether you like photography, video design or drawing. The level of commitment will also be entirely up to you. People will be staffed according to their ability and willingness to commit.
S- Sports Representatives
[http://files.groupspaces.com/icss/files/356594/iTGG90TJ5PtWtPTGT2b8/S+-+Spo…]
Are you passionate about sports? Do you want to lead your team to glory in Warwick Summer Games and Nottingham Games?
Look no more! Sports Representative is the role for you!
Sports Representatives will work closely with the Sports Officer in organising the sporting activities of ICSS as well as leading the charge for WSG and Notts glory!

2. Seniors' Farewell Party 2012
Hi fellow Singsoc mates!
It’s that time of the year when some of us are about to graduate and start an exciting new phase of their lives! To bid them farewell, Singsoc is organising Seniors’ Farewell Party 2012!
SFP is an annual party organised to provide an avenue for graduating seniors to gather for an evening of fun as a family, and reminisce about their time in Imperial. It takes the form of a potluck dinner with fringe activities, where members from all years come together and spend the night playing games and catching up :D
To this end, we are looking for two bold, charming individuals to represent Singsoc in wishing the graduating seniors all the best in their future endeavours by volunteering their services as emcees for that special evening. If you think you have what it takes, email Ting Wei at twl109(a)ic.ac.uk<mailto:twl109@ic.ac.uk> to sign up now!
To seniors graduating this year, whether you are a 3rd or 4th year, completing your post grad studies, or a 6th year medic even, you are ALL invited to the party organised just for YOU. To best accomodate your busy schedules, please fill up the following Google doc with your dates of unavailability, for the months of May and June:
docs . google . com/a/ic-singsoc . net/spreadsheet/ccc<http://e.groupspaces.com/click/202a9-3iwp7-1sh2m2suea?u=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.…>

3. 30th Anniversary Logo Design
In the face of ICSS’s 30th Anniversary, we are calling out to the avid designer in you to come up with a logo to celebrate ICSS's 30th Anniversary. This 30th Anniversary Logo will be used in conjunction with the official ICSS logo and will be featured in this year's activities and memorabilia.
Some guidelines for designing the logo are as follows:
  1. Should embody the 30th Anniversary spirit.
  2. Should be distinguishable from but complement the official ICSS logo.
  3. Should not contain any objectionable content.
The process is as follows:
  1. Participants will submit their designs to xing.loy11(a)imperial.ac.uk<mailto:xing.loy11@imperial.ac.uk> by 18th May 2012.
  2. Shortlisted designs will be voted for by the society.
  3. The design with the most votes will win!
To reward you for your effort, the winning entrant will also receive a £30 Marks and Spencers' voucher!
We look forward to your participation!

4. Take a Break, Have a Kit-Kat
Spring Break is approaching and I am sure everyone will be using this well-deserved break to enjoy themselves and soak in the sun… oh wait I forgot that we are in Imperial here. The ugly truth is that most of you will either be found buried under your books in your rooms or be seen pitching tents in the Central Library and before you know it you’ll be wondering where your vacation disappeared to!
To give the mugger in us a break, we will be organising a Free-for-All Sports Session and Picnic @ Hyde Park. In particular, we will be having a Frisbee Tutorial for all those aspiring to throw a wicked forehand. If you’re not keen on having a go at Frisbee, we will also be holding other sporting activities such as Football, Captain’s Ball and Touch-Rugby.
If you are not so keen on sports at all, feel free to come down to soak in the sun and have a picnic with your friends or OG!
Please indicate your preference in the below link if you have not already done so. The date of this event will be confirmed in the next week or two once we have collated sufficient response.

5. Hall Write-Ups and Sotong Guide
Remember that time one year ago when you were young, lost and generally blur? It’s now your chance to help those who are now equally young, lost and blur as you were!
For the Sotong Guide, we are collecting anything you would like incoming freshers to know. Anything at all, from which lady is the most “kiam siap” at the QTR (with pictorial description) to the place where you can find the cheapest branded Royal Umbrella Thai Rice.
To help freshers decide on their halls, we will also be collecting the hall write-ups. Love the daily 50 minute scenic walk to school? Hate the way your armchair takes up precious real estate in your room? Love the very happening parties occurring outside your room late at night? Hate the lack of a nearby Marks and Spencers to satisfy your cookie cravings? We hope that each hall (Eastside, Southside, Garden and Weeks, Holbein and Willis Jackson, Bernard Sunley, Southwell, Fisher, Beit, Pembridge, Orient and Wilson) will be able to send a write-up to us to provide your unique, individual and Singaporean perspective on things.
Please email us any write-ups, or mini-write-ups on small things you wish to share at xing.loy11(a)imperial.ac.uk <mailto:admin@ic-singsoc.net>

6. Dialogue with DPM Teo Chee Hean
Dear brothers and sisters,
Our alumni, the Imperial College Alumni Association of Singapore (ICAAS), will be organising a dialogue with DPM Teo this coming Summer holiday. At present, details are still being ironed out, but here's what we have so far!
Date: 25 July, 2012
Time: 6.30pm
Location: TBC
Cost: Estimated 10 pounds (payment likely to be made while in the UK, before return to Singapore)
The event will also be held in conjunction with a series of celebrations for our Society's 30th Anniversary! More details will be revealed at later time. The last time that the ICSS-ICAAS had a dialogue with DPM Teo was 15 years ago, where he launched our old Society logo during the event. So this is definitely a chance not to be missed!

blur? It’s now your chance to help those who are now equally young, lost
and blur as you were!
For the Sotong Guide, we are collecting anything you would like incoming
freshers to know. Anything at all, from which lady is the most “kiam siap”
at the QTR (with pictorial description) to the place where you can find the
cheapest branded Royal Umbrella Thai Rice.
To help freshers decide on their halls, we will also be collecting the hall
write-ups. Love the daily 50 minute scenic walk to school? Hate the way
your armchair takes up precious real estate in your room? Love the very
happening parties occurring outside your room late at night? Hate the lack
of a nearby Marks and Spencers to satisfy your cookie cravings? We hope
that each hall (Eastside, Southside, Garden and Weeks, Holbein and Willis
Jackson, Bernard Sunley, Southwell, Fisher, Beit, Pembridge, Orient and
Wilson) will be able to send a write-up to us to provide your unique,
individual and Singaporean perspective on things.
Please email us any write-ups, or mini-write-ups on small things you wish
to share at admin(a)ic-singsoc.net.

 5. ICSS 30th Anniversary Logo Design
In the face of ICSS’s 30th Anniversary, we are calling out to the avid
designer that is you to come up with, yes, you guessed it, the new ICSS
Logo. This ICSS Logo will be unveiled during the Dialogue session with DPM
Teo, and will be used as *THE* logo of ICSS. So if you want to make your
mark in the history of ICSS, if you want to be remembered as “THE ONE” who
designed the new logo of ICSS, if you are ready to step up to the plate and
accept this challenge, this is it.
  The process is as follows:
   1. Participants will submit their designs (in .jpg) to *
   liaisonsofficer(a)ic-singsoc.net* by *18th May*.
   2. Shortlisted designs will then be voted for by the society
   3. The design with the most votes will win
Eternal glory awaits. This is your chance to make your mark.

 6. UCLSS Play - Everything But The Brain
The UCL Singapore Society’s annual production is back!
Everything But The Brain is a play about a father and a daughter (Elaine),
and their relationship with Newtonian physics, old age, and Time. The play
utilizes Brechtian techniques, and involves a lively chorus of three bears
(Papa Bear, Mama Bear and Baby Bear) who help our heroine in narration.
Elaine tries to save her father’s brain by freezing time.
4 shows will be held at the *Lion and Unicorn Theatre* at the following
dates and times:
**SHOW DATES & TIMES:**
22nd March 2012, THURSDAY - 7.30pm
23rd March 2012, FRIDAY - 7.30pm

the London Olympics 2012 and has kindly offered ICSS some tickets. If you

tickets to watch the games (only those for which Team Singapore qualifies),
possibly even meet the athletes, please email vicepresident(a)ic-singsoc.net with
your *full name and contact number* by Friday, 23 March. You will be

 8. Dialogue with DPM Teo Chee Hean @ The Pod, National Library Singapore
Dear brothers and sisters,
Our alumni, the Imperial College Alumni Association of Singapore (ICAAS),
will be organising a dialogue with DPM Teo this coming Summer holiday. At
present, details are still being ironed out, but here's what we have so
far!
    *Date: 25 July, 2012
Time: 6.30pm
Location: The Pod, National Library*
Cost: Estimated 10 pounds (payment likely to be made while in the UK,
before return to Singapore)
The event will also be held in conjunction with a series of celebrations
for our Society's 30th Anniversary! More details will be revealed at later
time. The last time that the ICSS-ICAAS had a dialogue with DPM Teo was 15
years ago, where he launched our old Society logo during the event. So this
is definitely a chance *not to be missed*!

 1. President's Address
Dear friends,
Winter is over and spring is now upon us. Like a plant buried by snow in
winter and re-emerging to flower in spring, the ICSS has undergone its own
renewal; the 30th Executive Committee has been formed and has now taken
office. To begin, I would like to thank you for voting us into office and I
look forward to working closely with all members to take ICSS forward in
the year to come.
It is often said that unity begets strength and this is a point with which
I couldn’t agree more. Next year is our 30th anniversary and we are hoping
to make it a special year for everyone. It is indeed a daunting task that
we as an Exco have ahead of us in the coming year and we hope to get
everyone onboard to take our society forward in the year to come.
Alone as an Exco, we are weak. But together as a society, the boundaries of
possibility are expanded immensely. It is you, our members, who lie at the
heart of our society and it is you who makes this society the home that we
have come to know. You have placed your trust in us and we will not let you
down.
While I cannot promise you that we will be perfect, I will promise you one
thing. That we, the 30th Exco will serve with all the heart and passion
that we can muster. We will always be striving for better, for more fun,
but most importantly, for family. Again, thank you for choosing us and we
look forward to serving you in the year to come!
Ashley Ng
ICSS 30th Exco President
 ------------------------------
 2. Introducing... the 30th Exco!
*President – Ashley Ng
* Ashley loves sports, and food, and music. He absolutely cannot resist
good food and likes to believe that pursuing his interests in the field of
gastronomical appreciation will not affect his health and fitness.
Unfortunately, the real world is not so kind and he is constantly reminded
that fatty tissue really does accumulate. Thankfully though, he pursues
sports with a passion, playing basketball, tennis and volleyball whenever
he can. These activities provide just the level of energy output that is
required to maintain his physique at just below morbidly obese. Or so he
likes to believe.
In his spare time, Ashley is a motivated learner in the art of projecting
one’s voice to produce music. Unfortunately, he was born with a severe
deficiency in this respect and most of the time, the melodies he tries to
produce end up as a cacophony of not-so-melodious noises. Thankfully he has
good friends who never fail to remind him when he goes out of tune with
their chorus of laughter and jokes at his expense. He measures his
improvement in this field by the amount of reminders he gets each time he
tries to sing.
Despite all his deficiencies and self-delusions, Ashley feels confident in
saying that Singsoc is a great society that has provided all Singaporeans
here in Imperial with a strong support network from which to explore, excel
and ultimately achieve everything that they have aspired to do in coming
here. He sincerely hopes to improve on and continue the good work of the
past committees and with the rest of the Exco, he promises you an exciting
and fulfilling year ahead in Singsoc!
*Vice-President – Bennett Tan*
Bennett loves performing. And watching musicals. And food. But mostly
food. Loves it a lot. He would like to eat all the time if it didn’t mean
becoming a wobbly blob. It would probably be appropriate to mention the bit
about him enjoying long-distance running too to counter all the sedentary,
fat-inducing activities mentioned.
He also often wonders how he had the misconception that studying in
Imperial entailed sitting by the fireplace (or radiator since halls don’t
have fireplaces) with a Jeffrey Archer novel and a mug of hot chocolate
while snow fell softly outside the window. He has learnt to make do by
camping in the warmth of the central library with a nice thick textbook.
For now.
If you think the obsessive compulsiveness that has seen perfectly arranged
toiletries and footwear in exact parallel alignment in Bennett’s room was
excessive, you’re going to be typhoon-ed away by the meticulous execution
of the ambitious plans in store for the ICSS in its 30th year. Want to be
part of that legendary era? Well, put down your pen and release that
quantum chemistry textbook you’ve been reading for leisure (there, there,
we know it’s painful to let go), and step up to the plate as we embark on a
quest to rediscover a place where we know (or at least feel like) we’re
home.
*Secretary – Gabriel Quek*
Unlike the rest of the exco, Gabriel has no qualms about sleeping eating as
much as he likes, whenever he likes. It also matters not to him whether the
item in question is actually edible by conventional standards. He delights
in sampling the variety of mystery seasonings concocted by some of the
other equally questionable personalities below, and can be counted on to
consume unwanted food faster than the food waste bin.
An unhealthier obsession than his passion for food is Gabriel’s passion for
sleep music. He writes music for leisure and sleeps sings when he thinks no
one is watching/listening. Embarrassing video-graphic evidence available.
More importantly, something that he wants everyone to know about music is
that silences should be appreciated and savoured. Just like sleep food.
So what makes Gabriel so special? Despite defying convention in being the
first male secretary in… ever, like our dear VP, Gabriel likes sleep order
to an obsessive degree. However, this behavioral disorder has some side
effects. He can’t promise producing the most awesome meeting minutes in the
world, but he can promise having the most epic
DON’T-DISTURB-ME-I’M-MULTITASKIN**G droolface while sleeping typing it.
That and injecting his quirky personality into all that he does. It’s gonna
be an interesting year ahead…
*Treasurer – Ng Zhen Yi*
Do not be frightened by Zhen Yi's crazy manly laughter - she is secretly
very shy and demure. Zhen Yi can usually be spotted munching on something
unhealthy, staring into space, or flashing her megawatt smile. Watch out
for her various talents, which include chopping onions without tearing,
eating multiple tubs of ice-cream in short periods of time, and carrying
weights while walking up and down Oxford Street.
Zhen Yi attaches memories to music, clothes & food. She loves family trips
to the supermarket and many cups of hot chocolate on a cold day. She is
also mildly claustrophobic and does housework when she is stressed. Zhen Yi
dreams of owning a private beach where she can relax on a deckchair, sip on
avocado milkshake and listen to the flapping waves. To her, food for
thought is not a substitute for the real thing, and good food has
superhealing powers - thus she eats anything and everything and it keeps
her happy and motivated in life.
Even though Zhen Yi believes that a meal is the only currency that's real,
she means well and is not always greedy. You can be assured that ICSS's
dollars and pounds are in safe hands. *

*Events Officer (Major Event) – Phua Hsuan Te*
To go where no man has been before, to explore the furthest reaches of
space, deepest depths of the oceans and the densest of jungles. The name
Hsuan Te is synonymous with the word EPIC. But since ICSS has no Epic Event
Officer, he settled with the next best option: the Major Event Officer. He
believes that nothing is beyond the reach of ICSS, with a little bit of
planning, a hint of optimism and a dash of luck, the impossible is nothing.
Want to traverse the jungles of Madagascar to look for the mystical Totem
of Eternal Life? Hsuan Te’s your man. Want a full-scale inter-faculty
paintball assault course? Hsuan Te’s your point man. Want to host a
200-strong conference with nationalities from over 60 countries? Look no
further.
You may find him every day, without fail, at the JCR buying his most
trusted lunch, the almighty chicken and bacon sandwich. While back in hall
he can be found cooking up a storm with unstable concoctions and mysterious
sauces for his dear test subjects cooking group mates to feast upon. Back
in Singapore he’ll be hanging out at the local watering hole known as Old
Airport Road, washing down a nice bowl of bak chor mee with some infamous
Lao Ban tao hui.
On a serious note, next year commemorates ICSS’ 30th year and Hsuan Te has
big plans. It’s time to rally the forces as we face our biggest celebration
yet. He will be calling on all Singaporean Imperial students, both past and
present to come home to where it all began; a home away from home. But he
cannot do this by himself. So drop your calculators, pens, chemicals
(carefully!) and rise to the occasion! It’s time to show Imperial College
London that we’re a force to be reckoned with.
See y’all at Major Event 2013.
*Events Officer 1 – Lee Ting Wei*
Probably well-known as the notorious hokkien-spouting Fairy Godfather due
to Major Event, Ting Wei has a secret to reveal. He wasn’t actually ACTING
on stage per se, he actually kind of acts like that in real life as well!
(minus the scripted lines and make up, of course). That being said, there
are a few things you most likely will come to know him by over the next
year.
Ting Wei loves to talk. Like a LOT. Whether it is about games, books, or
food, Ting Wei can always be counted on for a nice long conversation if you
care to start it. In fact, one of his friends once said “Hey, you ever
notice? Ting Wei only stops talking when there’s food in his mouth!” He
prefers to see it as a keenness to connect with his peers. Humph.
Ting Wei loves food as well. He views food as more than a necessity for
survival, he loves it with a burning passion. Want to blow £20 on
Singaporean food at Rasa Sayang cause you miss your *Oh Chien*? Been there
done that. Want to walk half an hour to Earl’s Court just to get a taste of
that authentic *Char Kway Teow*? Been there done that too. Anytime you need
an eating buddy, Ting Wei’s your man! But be prepared, he is one of THOSE
people who eat a lot but never get fat. (truth be told, he’s lost 3kg since
coming to London:D)
And lastly, Ting Wei loves EVENTS!!!! Because there’s always talking. And
probably food. Unless you’re going for a sit-down silence protest and
hunger strike against inhumane treatment of polar bears in Narnia. Or
something. And it is with this love for events that Ting Wei strives to
make every event in Singsoc a great success for all to enjoy in the
upcoming year ahead!
*Events Officer 2 – Tan Qian Wen*
Having a feisty character, Qian Wen is often found chatting and laughing
loudly at the expense of her image (Some may say, what image?!). She has an
uncanny nature to ramble off lame comments at sporadic times and overuses
the word ‘omgawd’. But beneath this loquacious and rowdy girl is a romantic
heart that finds comfort in reading chickflicks, taking long walks,
daydreaming, singing and looking at pretty pictures. Qian Wen loves to
sleep, A LOT – and you must let her, lest you want her extremely high or
cranky – and wakes up to the joyful tune of Pokemon Centre every morning.
(There’s a kid in everyone! :D)
Qian Wen believes that life needs a splash of red everywhere and lives by
the quote ‘*Courage is not the absence of fear but the judgement that
something is more important than fear. The brave may not live forever but
the cautious do not live at all.*’ One thing that Qian Wen can never live
without is definitely sports; she finds immense joy in running and playing
all sorts of ball games and is still waiting to realise her dream of
participating in a marathon. She cannot resist cakes and ice cream (yum!
^^) and adores a combination of both despite them being deadly treats.
Despite her playful nature, Qian Wen is more than ready to take the wheel
and set sail with everyone to more fun and adventure. Engines? Check. Life
jackets? Check. Food supply? Check. So what are you waiting for? All
aboard! :)
*Sports Officer – Teo Kai Qin*
Kai Qin is a tea person, he loves to enjoy tea on a fine Sunday evening by
the balcony watching the sunset and reading whatever book that has caught
his interest. Besides enjoying his cuppa tea, Kai Qin has other curious
hobbies like photography. His personal motto of “Just keep shooting, just
keep shooting, just keep shooting…” inspired by Dory from Finding Nemo
often leaves people thinking that he is a trigger-happy nutcase.
As a sports freak, Kai Qin can usually be found playing football with his
fellow kakis at our favourite Hyde Park, or be seen running around the
neighbourhood training for his IPPT.
Don’t let Kai Qin’s quiet demeanour fool you, he may be a man of few words
but stored somewhere in that brain of his is a factory that constantly
churns out grand plans and wild ideas. Stay tune to find out what he has in
store for sports enthusiasts of ICSS!
*Liaisons Officer – Loy Xing Kai*
“As all monsters are, Cookie Monster is initially intimidating. His manner
is gruff. His clumsiness occasionally causes damage.
But quickly, Cookie Monster comes to be seen as benign - indeed, downright
friendly. He has a few bad habits. He cannot resist gobbling up anything
and everything that might be consumed, especially cookies. And he cannot
quite control the way he spews forth crumbs. He is the quintessential
consumer. Yet clearly, he means no harm.”
-Richard G. Darman, Director of the Office of Management and Budget, USA
Xing Kai loves cookies. Very much. At an average of over 1 pack a day, his
growing girth and thunder thighs stand testament to his insatiable hunger
for cookies (specifically, Marks and Spencer All Butter White Chocolate
Chunk Cookies). Having naturally big crazy eyes, a deep gruff voice,
terrible eating habits and thick blue fur, he also does seem unapproachable
at times.
However, constantly sporting a sheepish grin, he is really harmless, timid
and shy, and just wants to be your friend. (:
With his immediate environment perpetually in a state of mess, he is
well-versed and experienced in the art dealing with complicated situations
and finding order in the most disorganized of states. He spends his free
time in the library and reads his quantum chemistry textbook for leisure,
and loves nothing more than typing verbose, obfuscating reports.
Xing Kai promises to do his best as the “IT Support Guy” by teaching the
other Exco members how to use Facebook, Gmail and basic HTML and as the
Liaisons officer by listening to your feedback and preparing lengthy
write-ups. You can definitely look forward to an exciting year ahead!

 3. SingSoc vs MSoc Football Friendly (7th Mar 12)
SingSoc 2 – 0 MSoc
Victory is sweet, especially so when it is against your bitter rivals. Last
week, 16 brave souls represented SingSoc in a football friendly against the
Malaysian Society and I am proud to announce that we came out victorious!
It was a closely-contested game but we won the 2-0, courtesy of a
cross-shot goal by Woo Han and a RVP-esque lob by Joe Koh!
Due to the positive feedback from both sides, we will be looking to
organise more of such football friendlies with our counterparts. If you are
keen on joining this band of merry footballers, let me know by dropping me
an email at sportsofficer(a)ic-singsoc.net, or simply turn up at our weekly
Wednesday kick-about at Hyde Park!
Your friendly Sports Officer,
Kai Qin

 4. UKSSC Captain's Ball - ICSS vs KCLMSS (14th Mar 12)
Oh, did I mention that good things come in pairs? Today, our spirited
Captain’s Ball Team, led by Ashley and Esther, beat King’s College London
Singapore Society 21-18 and in doing so clinched the UKSSC Captain’s Ball
Championship!
The game began with both sides raking up points in succession with Imperial
in the lead. However, the winds turned against us in the 3rd quarter as KCL
managed to reel off 4 consecutive points. The crestfallen faces of our
players each time KCL scored rapidly turned to that of determination with
huge morale boosts from our supporters at the side lines. Trailing KCL with
a score of 12-16, time-outs were called and various changes in tactics were
put into play. We finally broke through the wall halfway through the
4thquarter with a goal! Another two goals followed soon after but that
elusive
16th refused to come. One final time out was called with 10 seconds left on
the clock. All eyes followed that lone ball as our opponents tried to stall
for time, but just as Umber had FGF to make his miracle happen, the final
two touches came from Imperial and as the ball landed in our Captain’s
hands, the final whistle sounded! It was now tied at 16-16. The game went
into extra time and with our morale at a high, we ended the game at 21-18.
Good job guys! And congratulations to Yuxiang, our ex-Sports Officer for
this long awaited not-silverware but “Goldware”! Also, special thanks to
the UKSSC for organising this Captain’s Ball Tournament.
I hope this Captain’s Ball team will keep their enthusiasm levels high and
I am sure everyone in the ICSS will be looking forward to more good news
from them.
Your friendly Sports Officer,
Kai Qin

 1. The 30th ICSS Executive Committee
With the conclusion of our AGM on the 29th of February 2012, it is our
delight to introduce the newly-elected committee to you!
*President: Ashley Ng
Vice-President: Bennett Tan
Secretary: Gabriel Quek
Treasurer: Ng Zhen Yi
Events Officer (Major Event): Phua Hsuan Te
Events Officer: Lee Ting Wei & Tan Qian Wen
Sports Officer: Teo Kai Qin
Liaisons Officer: Loy Xing Kai*
As the outgoing 29th ICSS Exco, we’re sad to bid everyone farewell, and
will certainly treasure the memories and friendships forged over the course
of just one year! One little K&T article is insufficient to thank everyone
who’s been there for us over the past year, so we’ve expanded it to 9 Kaya
& Toast posts - as you’ll see if you scroll down this issue. :)
<http://e.groupspaces.com/click/1y0la-1ez6m-16ughpkmkh?u=http%3A%2F%2Ffiles.…>
Before we close the curtain on our year, we’d just like to rally everyone
round in providing the 30th ICSS Exco your full support and encouragement
in the coming year, just as you’ve done for us! We are confident that they
can step up to the plate and bring this Society to greater heights, but
they’ll need all the support they can get. As our final request, we’d like
to especially call on all Freshers of the 30th ICSS batch to stay
closely-knit and passionate as you’ve always been, and together throw your
weight behind the 30th ICSS Exco as they embark on possibly the biggest,
most momentous, and most demanding events in our Society’s recent history:
our *30th Anniversary Celebrations*.
And so, while farewells are the hardest part, all of us in the 29th ICSS
Exco know- we’re blessed to have something that makes saying goodbye so
hard. To every one of you reading this article- thank you for making saying
goodbye so tough, and we wish you all the best in all your endeavours in
the year ahead!
Goodbye, and God bless. ;)
Much love,
29th ICSS Exco

 2. Final words from our President, Joshua
*“I have fought the good fight, I have run the race, I have kept the
faith.” *
*-2 Timothy 4:7*
As I pen this final farewell, I’m looking desperately for sources of
inspiration to best articulate the battle of emotions taking place inside
me. How to put an entire year’s worth of memories and experiences into
words? Interestingly though, in my search, I chanced upon our first K&T
post as the 29th ICSS Exco:
*“If I have seen further it is only by standing on the shoulders of
giants.” -Isaac Newton*
*... To you, the unsung heroes of ICSS, the silent 'giants' whom we have
come to and will continue to depend upon in the year ahead, thank you.
Thank you, for choosing us, for trusting us, and for placing us upon your
shoulders to help everyone look a little farther in the distance, and see
the way forward on this journey that we all share.”*
I have to admit that it’s more than a little nostalgic to read those lines
written almost a year ago! However, deeper than the sentimentality of the
article, reading those words reminded me of the many instances over the
past year that made those words nothing more than a severe understatement.
Indeed, the seniors who stayed for their 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th ten hour
marathon AGM, the Freshers who injected so much energy and enthusiasm into
all our events, the Cast and Crew of Solemates who put on an unforgettable
performance to a sell-out crowd, and the entire community of Singaporeans
here in Imperial College are all the ‘giants’ whom we the Exco have stood
upon to see a little farther, and thus drawn our support and strength. So
it is with a tinge of sadness and longing that we the 29th Exco bid
farewell to all our ‘giants’, who did not just trust us with the running of
the Society, but *cared* for us every step of the way.
Though words can’t express our gratitude for what our giants have done for
us, they deserve recognition for their unwavering efforts, and so, here’s
an attempt to give credit to those who have gone beyond and above the call
of duty:
   - To our seniors, you’ve always been the guiding lighthouse in the
stormy seas, leading us into safe harbours when we ventured too far into
uncertain waters. Your passion, commitment and steadfast dedication has
been exemplary and inspirational, and it is thanks to your foresight that
2011-2012 was a memorable year for us. In particular, I’d like to thank
Wen Jun, President of the 28th ICSS Exco, who was a constant pillar of
support in all my challenges, being just an SMS or a phone call away.
Finally, to our graduating seniors, it is with a heavy heart that we bid
you farewell upon your graduation, for you have done so much for us! Things
won’t be the same without you.
   - To my Batchmates, the Year 2s, my heroes. You were always our constant
source of comfort, happiness, humour, motivation and friendship. You were
there when we needed a shoulder to cry on, an ear to listen, or just a
smile to brighten our day. Personally, I’d like to thank my former Tizard
Hall cooking group- Vincent, Hua Sheng, Heng Yu, and Chester- for being my
little family, and for just being by my side when we first took over
office. Special thanks also goes out to my Chemistry family-Benjamin Chen,
Boon Kiat, Christine, Joel, Mervin, Wai Peng, and Yong Cai- who were always
supportive and patient in explaining whatever I missed out when dozing off
during lectures. Let us all, as one 29th ICSS batch, remain as strong and
united as ever, and show the 30th our full support in the coming year
   ahead!
   - Finally, to my home within a home away from home- the 29th ICSS Exco.
I’m truly blessed to have worked in such an exceptional team, where we see
each other not just as fellow Exco members but as close friends who’ve
stuck with us through thick and thin. Our Society’s vision of being a home
away from home was truly exemplified in us- the 9 birthday surprises we’ve
staged over the year, the little get-togethers and post-Exco meeting meals
we’ve shared, and the plethora of group shots we’ve taken amongst other
things. I am honoured not just to have served by the side of such capable
and caring individuals, but to have been called your friend, and brother.
Thank you, for 12 unforgettable months. :)
And so, as the 29th ICSS Exco step down from the shoulders of our giants,
we join their side and hope to offer our own shoulders to the 30th ICSS
Exco, upon which they can climb to see the way forward and so guide our
community along the right path. To all the members of the ICSS- thank you
for helping us fight the good fight, for urging us on to finish the race,
and for keeping your faith in us, the 29th.
It has been an honour serving you.
Yours truly,
Joshua Goh
(Ret.) President
P.S All the best, Ashley!
 ------------------------------
 3. Final words from our Vice-President, Eileen
Hello friends :)
The past year has been such an amazing ride with so much precious memories
and so much that I am grateful for. Thank you all for all your support in
every way possible, be it turning up for ICSS events or simply being there
for us.
   - To Bryan, thank you for being so patient in guiding me throughout the
year and all your wise advice.
   - To my coursemates (Xin Yu, Hui Erh, Limin, Lena, Joe, Han Teng and
Eugene), thank you for being so important friends and for all your
understanding and support when I cannot make it for gatherings at times.
   - To my housemates (Yue Chin, Shun Cheng and Tedrick), thank you for the
concern when I go home late and sorry for always koping things from the
house to be used as props.
   - To the ski trip participants, I hope you have enjoyed the trip and
thank you for the understanding and help when things did not go smoothly at
   times.
   - To the crew of Major Event 2012, thank you for all your initiative and
enthusiasm and we look forward to more outings together!
   - To the 29th, thank you for the journey together and for making every
Wednesday and Saturday something I look foward to. We have grown so much
since the first meeting and I will definitely miss our time together :)
   - To the 30th, Jiayou for the year ahead! There is so much you can do
and we will always be here to help if you need us!
   - To everyone who have helped me in one way or another throughout the
year (like Jermyn), I really appreciate all your help!
See you guys at future ICSS events and please continue to support the new
Exco!
 ------------------------------
 4. Final words from our Secretary, Shun Ying
9 Mar 2011 marked the first day of getting elected into the 29th, yet one
year down, the emotions and memories feels just like yesterday. The past
twelve months had been remarkable, and I have many to thank for making this
journey such a special one to me.
*To my dear 29th Exco:* My Wednesdays and Saturdays will no longer be the
same without all of you! The heartwarming birthday surprises that came a
full round just few days ago, weekly Exco meetings-cum-‘education sessions’
on army lingo (everyone else) and Joel’s lingo, hairpulling moments when
rushing deadlines for ICSS and school… Joshua, Eileen, Joel, Fong, Qin
Zheng, Yijing, Yuxiang, Yong Wen - each of you would always hold a special
place in my heart. Or rather... ‘I don't know where to start, but to show
you the shape of my heart.’ ;) I’ve never worked with a team with so much
chemistry and synergy as the 29th, so thank you for being the most
important and dearest people on this wonderful journey with me.
*To my upperstudy, Yu Leng:* Thank you for always being so patient with my
questions when I first started out as the Secretary, and for helping me to
grow into this role.
*To my Housemates: *I know living with an Exco member is never easy,
especially when you guys have an almost obligatory role to attend ICSS
events more actively than most Year 2s would be willing to – so thank you
for being part of this journey with me. From being Sojourn OGLs to
attending CNY dinner when we should be having our reunion dinner at home,
thank you for being ever so understanding and supportive. Yun Yi, Sheryl,
Leck Hung, Kelvin, Xavier, Jiashen and Terence, it is heartwarming to have
a family like you to go home to after a long day.
*To my Coursemates: *Thank you for being my most dedicated and encouraging
supporters, for maintaining 100% attendance rates for ICSS events in the
past year and lagging behind in coursework together with me. Most
importantly, thank you for always being by my side to share my woes during
rough periods over the year, and giving me the motivation to carry on.
Amanda, Chin, Yong Zi – I couldn’t have asked for better coursemates like
you.
*To my Wilson brothers:* Thank you for being by my side when I first took
over last year, and for showing support at ICSS events even when I know you
might not be inclined to. It means a lot to me when I see you guys turn up,
so thank you.
*To my Dancers:* Thanks for making every dance rehearsal worth looking
forward to - for a night of laughter and chatter, for (over-)stretching our
muscles with Seb’s intensive warm-ups, for coming up with the mathematical
correlation between the level of dancing and singing, and all the other
small things that made my day. Solemates would not have been the same
without each and every one of you, my dears.
*
To the 30th Exco:* Life as an Exco member is never a bed of roses, and
there will definitely be periods of time when you would question yourselves
why you ran for the Exco. No matter, always recall the enthusiasm you had
when you were addressing the Society during AGM, and be there for one
another even during the toughest of time. I know I can look forward to an
exciting new year under your leadership. The 29th will be here for you
guys. Good luck!
It is with much sadness to be sending out this last issue of Kaya & Toast
in my role as the ICSS Secretary. It has been a joy serving you, and I look
forward to future Singsoc events!

 5. Final words from our Treasurer, Joel
**The experience of being part of the 29th Exco has been something of an
enigma. Our journey, while filled with constant moments of sheer euphoria,
hasn’t exactly been all sunshine and roses. The exhilaration and sublime
satisfaction that comes with Sojourn/Lavish/Major Event preparation,
amongst other activities, comes with a price. Now as our time in office
officially enters its final throes, I would like to take the time to
acknowledge all those who have extended their hands in the darkest of
moments and thank them for making life a little less hostile in the face of
adversity.
The Exco really owes it to all members of the society to come as far as we
have. From the dynamic Incredibles during Sojourn and beyond, to the hugely
talented and steadfast Solemates cast and crew the past year wouldn’t have
been quite the same without you all. There are, however, a few individuals
I would like to give special mention.
Firstly, I would like to thank Chinhua for his transcendent contribution to
Major Event and in particular for helping bond the acting team over the
course of the past few months. The success that is now Solemates wouldn’t
have been possible without your knack of bringing the best out of the
actors. On another note I really need to thank you, along with the world’s
No.1 sous chef (Mervin Ang), for all your help regarding our
“extra-curricular” activities. Thanks guys, for being there for me rain or
shine.
Next, I would like to thank my beloved housemates for being the most
understanding, thoughtful and forgiving people. Thanks for delivering
dinner for all major event rehearsals, for putting up with all the Singsoc
stores currently residing in our basement and all the emotional support
you’ve given me in the recent months. Thanks Yong Wen, Vincent and Heng Yu
for the exceptional time we’ve had together and for being my best buds.
Finally, the following 8 people deserve the highest of praise:
   - Yong Wen, for single handedly taking care of all technical aspects of
everything and for being “our source of hope and inspiration” during
meetings. I know no one that is more qualified to do your job.
   - Yu Xiang, for your uncanny ability to source for the best deals
available. Thanks for helping save the society a ton of cash and of course
your unforgettable catch phrases that have something of a cult following
   these days.
   - Qin Zheng, for being the clinical and efficient and dependable person
that you are. Thanks for doing an outstanding job with Major Event
ticketing and amongst other things, thanks for being such a friend.
   - Fong, for all the time we spent in your house fretting over Lavish
ticket sales, sponsors etc. Thanks for being the source of creativity in
the Exco and I hope you enjoyed the time spent together in the open bath
   during Sojourn *wink*.
   - Yi Jing, for the exceptional management of all things Major Event,
none of us could have done a better job. Thanks also for putting up with
all the corrupted discourse that is the hallmark of our exco meetings.
   - Shun Ying, for your immense help in babysitting the UK bound Pageant
contestants and the planning of Chinese New Year Dinner. Without your
Chinese translations, CNY would not have been possible.
   - Eileen, for being the demure resolute and bubbly girl that we all
know. Thanks for organizing a terrific ski trip and helping us get the
hotel when our bus couldn’t make it on time .
   - Joshua, for being the ‘man with the plan’. Ever present and always on
task, thanks for leading the way… all the way.
 ------------------------------
 6. Final words from our Major Event Officer, Yijing
**Major event, 8 months of planning, 4 months of rehearsals and 1 night of
lime light. It was an experience of self-discovery, teamwork, pressure and
wonderful memories that will last for lifetime. I know that I have written
many thank you messages but these words are not enough to express my
gratitude towards all of you.
*29th Exco:* Thank you all for keeping me company for the past year. It
was a year of stress, long meetings and a year with 8 awesome people. I
really enjoyed my experience in the Exco. The jokes that we shared, the
inefficient but extremely fun and ‘informative’ meetings that we had.
Wednesdays will never be the same without you guys. (T.T) Thank you for
giving me your unyielding support during major event, taking care of your
fellow team members, sourcing for sponsorships, ticket tracking,
choreographing, designing, the list is endless and I can never thank you
enough. I will really miss all of you dearly.
*Creative team: *Thank you guys for shaping and creating major event. Like
what I have said a million times but would like to repeat it for one more
time, I am truly blessed with all the talents that I have this year. Thank
you for directing, writing, choreographing, coordinating, composing,
conducting, constructing, sewing, and designing. I know that I could be
quite boring at times, so thank you for bearing with me through the
meetings. Without all your creations, major event would remain as a
dream.^-^
*Cast and crew:* Or instead, I shall address you guys as ‘Solemates’. Thank
you for putting in 4 months of hard work and dedication into major event. I
thank you for all the sacrifices that you have made in the past few months.
Thank you for ditching your images on stage and putting up such an awesome
performance on stage. Thank you for being professional dancers and part
time students. Thank you for creating such imba logs and for embracing
darkness while the others shone under limelight. Thank you for singing and
playing such beautiful music that melted the hearts of our audience. Thank
you for designing our posters, tents, programme booklets, trailers, tickets
and making me understand the miracle of photoshop. I hope that you guys
have truly enjoyed the experience because there will only be one ‘Solemate’
for everyone. Thank you for tolerating my horrible speeches and my rather
reserved self for the 4 months. I hope that you guys will give your support
to the next major event and may Singsoc carry on its legacy of being a home
away from home.^-^
*Housemates: *Wai Peng, Yong Zi, Ji Wei, Xin Yu and Jian Wei, thank you for
supporting me throughout the major event period. Thank you for saving food
and leaving the lights on for me even if I returned really late. Thank you
for your kind words to spur me on during my most stressful periods. Most
importantly, thank you for joining major event 2012, we are the only
household that has full participation for Major Event. Thank you for being
my wonderful housemates.
*28th Exco: *Thank you for creating this new role in the Exco. Without you,
I will not be able to enjoy such a fruitful year. Thank you for giving me
the chance to realize my dream^-^
Thank you all for such a great and rewarding year. Please support our next
Major Event Officer Hsuan Te, just like the support that you have given
Major Event and me this year. Farewell my friends and all the best for your
future endeavor.
 ------------------------------
 7. Final words from our Events Officer, Fong
**I still remember sitting in the front row of the Triple E lecture theatre
last year, after getting voted into the 29th exco. I looked to my left and
right, and saw the rest of them: Joshua, Eileen, Joel, Shun Ying, Qin
Zheng, Yijing, Yuxiang and Yong Wen. And I remember thinking to myself, "Oh
dear Lord, what have I got myself into?"
Turns out it was a lot more than I expected, in ways both good and bad. Of
course, the bad came first. Many, many bad things. But the good that came
after, the emotional satisfaction that I now, finally, feel when I look at
everyone in the Society (both young and old), is fantastic. And so, to all
the freshers, thank you for turning up for all our cockamamie events; it's
always your enthusiasm that keeps us going. To my batchmates and seniors,
thank you, too, for turning up for our events, even though you're not
freshers anymore and thus have a heck of a lot more work.
To my housemates, Jason, Orion, Jin Yi, Limz and Sharon, thank you for
keeping dinner for me when I come back home late, and thank you for
agreeing to come for all the events when I ask (beg). To my coursemates,
the 11 Singaporean mech engers, thank you for letting me reference your
work when I do my stuff late, and when my report is due the day after. And
to THE very special friend, thank you for listening patiently when I
complain about my day, for cheering me up when I'm sad, and for always,
simply, being there for me.
To the other eight members of the 29th exco, life in Imperial has been a
roller coaster of stress, laughter, complaints, relief, blacklisting,
frustration, and above all, contentment in a job well done. We put in every
single bit of our hearts and souls into this adventure of a year, and I've
had an absolute ton of fun. Totally worth it.
 ------------------------------
 8. Final Words from our Events Officer, Qin Zheng
*“I feel a very unusual sensation - if it is not indigestion, I think it
must be gratitude.” ~ Benjamin Disraeli*
I have decided to make this message short and sweet even though my messages
of gratitude could have been infinitely long. I recall the moment of pride
and elation during the handover last year, and all the eruption of emotions
of the 28th and the newly instated 29th Exco; so much for all those tears
of joy and relief, alas, I did not feel a single thing. My feelings were
totally dead as to the future that lay ahead of the 29th Exco and me. Now
as I reminisce, I realised how much one single year could have changed my
life; though I hate to admit it, I am missing every single bit that
occurred over the past year. As I stood at the pedestal in front of the
lecture theatre last week giving my last report to the societ, I realised
that it was the last time I would ever be addressing singsoc. I did not
expect my feelings to be so complex, and I could finally term it as
“bittersweet”. No, there were no tears, but I realised that there was so
much that I needed to say to everyone as a whole.
Truth to be told, I shuddered at the idea of coordinating a large scale
orientation camp. As a student organisation, members must be motivated by
pure initiative, passion and goodwill. This is in contrast to a corporate
organisation where employees are motivated by $$ and promotion. This carrot
and the stick approach is a very effective incentive for an employer to
motivate the employees in their jobs. However in singsoc, if members are
not inspired, organised events will just go through motion and nothing good
will come out of it. That’s why, to the the Incredibles force of Sojourn
2011, you guys were enthusiastic and passionate; and it was this fervent
attitude that pieced Sojourn together and facilitated the forging of bonds
within the society. To all the freshers of 2011-12 who gave us your support
in Sojourn, without your sporty participation, Sojourn 2011 would never be
what it is remembered as today. To everyone, I thank you for making Sojourn
such a success and such a lovely experience for all (definitely including
me. I enjoyed every bit of it.)
To the music and chorale team, thank you for sticking together and
supporting the music aspect of the production all the way. My only wish if
for you guys to continue jamming and singing, even when there comes a point
in time in future when the performance is lost in the depth of your
memories.
Of course, a big thank you to my Aero coursemates – *“old man” Benjamin,
Junhao, Kelvin, Loo Ting, Michelle, Muhammad, Qiquan, and Xavier* for
always helping me out whenever we were busy with the society’s stuff.
Thanks also for being to there to support our events.
*
Martin and Zhexi*, do know that I am always very appreciative of how you
always support me during my term of office, especially during the Major
Event period. Thanks for always cooking for me almost everyday and even
though it could have jeopardised your studies.
*
Leonard* *Ho*, your random words of wisdom, advice and cakes always served
to cheer me up from a arduous day at school. You were a very good friend
whom I could always count on and was always there to chat about how the
sun, the moon and all the planets aligning in one straight line.
*
Boon Kiat*, thanks for always being there, always. It is always good to
know that there is someone staying just across the road who would throw
aside his work to have a beer or two with me at midnight when I needed a
break. Thanks. Your iron is still with me by the way.
There is this special group of people that defined my life as an events
officer. Every single one of you in the 29th executive committee made up my
year. There’s so much to tell you guys, but I believe it isn’t necessary
because even though we have handed over the responsibility, it is not the
end, but a new beginning. The end of the term of office does not mean the
end to our meet-ups.
Okay, if you think I have totally forgotten about you under the
“coursemates” section, you are so wrong. *Joel*, I have to tell you that
your presence in my life is really a blessing from heavens. On top of being
the meticulous and efficient treasurer, you also provided several mature
insights to our discussions. Besides all that, thank you for being such a
good friend, putting up with all my nonsense. (There will be more to come)
I am truly glad to have known you, my great masochistic friend.
Essentially, for the Singapore society, whose foundation is largely based
on the support of participants, the success of the events is defined by its
members. For that reason, it is because of all of you that the Singapore
society is shaped so beautifully. Brothers and sisters, this is truly the
last time I am addressing you guys in this way ever since the elections
last year. As I now show my gratitude for the support you have given us, it
is finally time for this season to come to an end, and for the younger
generation, all beaming with gusto and fervour, to step up and take the
helm. At this point in time when we bid our farewell, I like to make an
appeal to all of you once more, to continue giving your support for any
upcoming events and to continue preserving this family of brothers and
sisters.
 ------------------------------
 9. Final words from our Sports Officer, Yuxiang
First and foremost, I would like to thank my eight Exco-mates who stood by
me throughout the most hectic and rigorous times when I had to juggle
between the heavy academic work and numerous Exco commitments. The support
and aid they provided, during sports sessions and competitions, was vital.
And they definitely deserve credit for the successful sporting year.
Special thanks to Joshua who was very understanding, and always open to
requests for help and changes in plan. My term in office would not have
been completed so smoothly without any of them.
The second very important group of people behind me, was the dedicated
groups of Sports Representatives. I would like to take this opportunity to
express my gratitude to Qiquan, Justin Lim, Augustine, Gabriel, Yong Feng,
Christine, Qian Wen, Jin Yi, Yun Yi, Leonard Ho, Ashley and Esther, the
engineers of the organised regular sport sessions that many of you have
enjoyed. As initiators of the sessions, they formed the backbone of the
Recreation Sports Phase; equally crucial and team captains, they led our
teams in fierce battles and to several victories. The existence of an
active and exciting ICSS sports scene would not be possible in their
absence.
The last group of people that I wish to thank officially would be the Major
Event dance team. Spearheading the team were the creative and talented
choreographers. Working behind the scenes, and often unrecognised, they
were the ones who were responsible in orchestrating the brilliant dances
that we witnessed on 18 February 2012. Thus I would like to credit the
highly qualified Sebastian, Larissa, Hannah, Shun Ying for the beautiful
choreography, not forgetting Jewell who was IC for the Ballroom Dance.
Next, the group of people who were essential in communicating the thoughts
of the choreographers’, as well as the emotions involved in the musical, is
the passionate group of dancers. Despite the majority of them having no
prior dance background, this committed group of artistes managed to put up
such a fantastic show that many thought they were seasoned dancers. A
worthy point to note, is that they remained motivated and enthusiastic
throughout the entire four months of preparation, in spite of the high
pressure that I sometimes gave them. I am definitely proud to have led this
group of performers, who hopefully have found their new interest in dance.
Finally, I would also like to thank the people around me, particularly my
house-mates, as well as my course-mates, for the support and understanding
they have given me during my busiest periods. Life would have be certainly
much tougher without their encouragement. Also, I would like to thank every
single member who has lent their support for the sports events. I
definitely hope to see you continuing your active involvement in SingSoc’s
activities!
 ------------------------------
 10. Final words from our Liaisons Officer, Yong Wen
**It's been a long and difficult journey since March 2011. I went to AGM
not expecting to run for anything. As the positions rolled by and people
started nominating me, out of pure instinct, I rejected their nomination.
And then the last post came about -- and this was a post that I was
generally interested about since it seems to have a technical connotation,
albeit an incorrect one, to it. The rest was history as they say. I managed
to win marginally by one vote (I wonder who that last vote was from!) and I
was thrust into servitude for Singapore Society for one academic year.
The liaisons officer post has its role defined rather ambiguously in the
constitution. If I am not mistaken, this was because the post was created
not too long ago (by history standards) to give one more helping hand to
the already thinly-stretched exco. It is for this reason that his role is
not clearly defined. And it seem to have found its own niche as being a
post that requires IT savviness, no doubt because of me and my predecessors
I just want to point out that this is not the case and I hope that any
future elections will not pin a "IT guru" requirement for candidates who
are interested in running for this post.
The journey through the year had not been smooth sailing. There were downs
and frustration at many turns along the way and the amount of work and
fatigue is incredibly high at times. The long hours we spend at meetings
have brought out what I deem to be the best and worst of people and I have
recognised several weaknesses in myself that I intend to address. It is
extremely difficult now, as I end my term in office, as I am swamped with a
plethora of coursework after being involved heavily in Major Event and
other events. It is a huge test of my time management and I have learnt
much as much as I have enjoyed the process, even though I might begrudge at
times.
Singsoc has been a huge part of my life for the past year. I have a
portable hard disk that holds the archives of Singsoc and I will have to
pass it on soon. I will miss its presence on my desk. I will miss the
swarms of email I get every day in my Singsoc email account. I will miss
posting news and updates to our website (if anyone ever notices!) and the
Facebook page. I will miss the meetings and discussions we have to discuss.
I never thought I would say this, but it had been *an incredible year*.
Before this piece of prose devolves into a philosophical melancholy, I
would like to thank several people. Firstly I would like to thank the rest
of the 29th Exco members, who through thick and thin, have endured my
insufferable cynicism and impatience at times. I apologise if I have
offended any one in any way. I would also like to thank all the people
outside the Exco who have helped me out in one way or another: Bao Chen,
Han Teng, Arnold, Grace, Monica, Bo Xuan, Vincent, Patrick et al. I
apologise if I have missed out any of you but you will have my gratitude.
To end off, I would like to wish Xing Kai all the best in his new role. And
of course, help is just a phone call away as I would be more than willing
to assist. May the 30th Exco have a smooth sailing year ahead. Nil sine
labore.

 1. The 30th ICSS Executive Committee
With the conclusion of our AGM on the 29th of February 2012, it is our
delight to introduce the newly-elected committee to you!
*President: Ashley Ng
Vice-President: Bennett Tan
Secretary: Gabriel Quek
Treasurer: Ng Zhen Yi
Events Officer (Major Event): Phua Hsuan Te
Events Officer: Lee Ting Wei & Tan Qian Wen
Sports Officer: Teo Kai Qin
Liaisons Officer: Loy Xing Kai*
As the outgoing 29th ICSS Exco, we’re sad to bid everyone farewell, and
will certainly treasure the memories and friendships forged over the course
of just one year! One little K&T article is insufficient to thank everyone
who’s been there for us over the past year, so we’ve expanded it to 9 Kaya
& Toast posts - as you’ll see if you scroll down this issue. :)
<http://e.groupspaces.com/click/1xvm3-1ez6m-208vig028y?u=http%3A%2F%2Ffiles.…>

 ------------------------------
I have decided to make this message really short even though my messages of
gratitude could have been mountainous. To the Incredibles force of Sojourn
2011, you guys were enthusiastic and passionate; and it was this fervent
attitude that pieced Sojourn together and facilitated the forging of bonds
within the society. A big thank you to all the freshers of 2011-12, who
gave us your support in all our activities, especially Sojourn.
Specifically, during the gruelling period of Major event from January to
February, cheesy as it may sound, I am indebted to the music and chorale
team for adding colours to my life, jobs and responsibilities; all this
joy, laughter and tears in the process inspired me to work even harder for
the production.
Nil sine
labore.
