 1. Happily ever after... Final Major Event update
Dearest brothers and sisters,
Doesn't everyone love happy endings? Yet, despite the fact that Umber and
Cindy have found their sole-mate in one another, it is with a tinge of
regret that I must announce the close of that chapter of the story.
<http://e.groupspaces.com/click/1woox-1ez6m-1xubc22jd4?u=http%3A%2F%2Ffiles.…>
Indeed, as the lights dimmed in the Great Hall last Saturday evening, the
end of Solemates signified a climatic finish to the months of preparation
and sacrifice put in by the Cast and Crew. The * positive reviews and
comments from many members of the audience* served as confirmation of the
team's efforts, and many thanks goes out to the entire production team for
putting on an *outstanding* performance. The word has even reached *Felix,
the Imperial College students' newspaper,* such that an article on
Solemates will be published in this week's edition! Spread the word, and
remember to grab your copy of Felix tomorrow.
With your combined effort, we've managed to sell *a GRAND* *TOTAL OF 525
TICKETS*, far exceeding our own expectations! Our gratitude also goes out
to all those who supported us along the way, especially the seniors who
were present at rehearsals to provide valuable feedback and encouragement,
as well as all our friends and fans in attendance on Saturday evening. To
one and all, thank you, for making our dream come true.
<http://e.groupspaces.com/click/1woox-1ez6m-1xubc22jd4?u=http%3A%2F%2Ffiles.…>
While it is sad that the chapter of Solemates has come to a close, the
story has far from ended! What lives on even after the lights go down are
the friendships, and the strong bonds formed between the members of our
community here after months of working as one team, for one goal.
But, without Major Event, there would be none of these memories, none of
these friendships, and none of these 'happy endings'.
So, to all Solemates Cast and Crew, I invite you to carry on the spirit,
and to recreate the experience for our community next year by taking part
in Major Event 2013!
In that same vein, I invite all the members of the ICSS to consider running
for office positions in the 30th ICSS Executive Committee! Elections are
just around the corner, so please submit your manifestos early and grab
your friends along to attend the AGM. More details can be found in the
following AGM article.
Finally, thank you for reading these weekly updates! Just as Solemates has
drawn to a close, so too will this 'column' also see its conclusion. All
that remains to be said is that the past few months have been an
*extremely*rewarding and electrifying experience because of you, and
it is with high
hopes that we look forward to Major Event 2013!
See you all at AGM next week!
Yours truly,
Joshua

 5. KCLMSS Musical Production 2012: "Uniform: A Fable of Distinctions" (8/9
March 2012)
>From the people who brought you Merdeka: The Rock Musical, Beauty World,
Love Song For No One and In Pursuit, this year, King’s College London
Malaysian & Singaporean Society 2011/12 Proudly Presents...
*Uniform: A Fable of Distinctions
*<http://e.groupspaces.com/click/1woox-1ez6m-1xubc22jd4?u=http%3A%2F%2Ffiles.…>
Synopsis:
This witty musical comedy examines relationships, ideals, and the search
for independence through the lens of class separation.
On the brink of adulthood, two best friends anticipate their coming of age.
Lay Kim, a typical Hokkien Chinese girl, has set aside her moving-away
plans to take care of her parents' failing food stall. Liz, the
English-educated daughter of a well-to-do restaurant chain owner, has
decided that she wants individuality apart from her family and peers.
Along with their respective brothers providing humorous perspective, the
girls reflect on their formative years to find answers to their problems.
Lay Kim begins sifting through past conflicts that affect her sibling and
her friendships, while Liz desperately looks for ways to achieve her
apparently superfluous goal. As they go along their individual journeys,
the girls begin to question the strength of their friendship against the
strength of their own personal desires.

 9. Dialogue with DPM, Teo Chee Hean @ The Pod, National Library Singapore
Dear brothers and sisters,
Our alumni, the Imperial College Alumni Association of Singapore (ICAAS),
will be organising a dialogue with DPM Teo this coming Summer holiday. At
present, details are still being ironed out, but here's what we have so
far!
*Date: 25 July, 2012
Time: 6.30pm

Cost: Estimated 10 pounds (payment likely to be made while in the UK,
before return to Singapore)
The event will also be held in conjunction with a series of celebrations

Dearest brothers and sisters,
Doesn't everyone love happy endings? Yet, despite the fact that Umber and
Cindy have found their sole-mate in one another, it is with a tinge of
regret that I must announce the close of that chapter of the story.
<http://e.groupspaces.com/click/1woj5-1ez6m-10bxgy46d9?u=http%3A%2F%2Ffiles.…>
<http://e.groupspaces.com/click/1woj5-1ez6m-10bxgy46d9?u=http%3A%2F%2Ffiles.…>
Yours truly,
Joshua
*THE END*

 4. KCLMSS Musical Production 2012: "Uniform: A Fable of Distinctions" (8/9
March 2012)
>From the people who brought you Merdeka: The Rock Musical, Beauty World,
Love Song For No One and In Pursuit, this year, King’s College London

*Uniform: A Fable of Distinctions
*<http://e.groupspaces.com/click/1woj5-1ez6m-10bxgy46d9?u=http%3A%2F%2Ffiles.…>

 2. ICSS Major Event 2012 - Solemates (18 Feb 2012)
*Imperial College Singapore Society proudly presents Major Event 2012 -
Solemates.*
<http://e.groupspaces.com/click/1vuyf-1ez6m-4zimudzbo?u=http%3A%2F%2Ffiles.g…>
Solemates is a story about a boy meeting a girl, although not in your usual
fashion. Orphaned at a young age, Umber was taken in by the Ella family. At
first, things were looking great: three square meals a day, a roof over his
head, and a place to call home. What more could a homeless street urchin
want?
But as time went on, the Ella family started to make use of Umber... He was
made to wash dishes, do laundry, and even help the Ella twins with their
homework! Bullied and mistreated, Umber yearns for a better life.
One day, as the Ella family does their grocery shopping (with Umber in tow
as their personal porter), Umber learns about the Queen's Ball. Men from
all across the land are flocking to win the beautiful Princess Cindy's
heart, and Umber sees this as his chance for happiness! He waits eagerly
for the day to come.
On the morning of the Queen's Ball, his twin stepbrothers, Mozza Ella and
Salmon Ella, inform Umber that Pa has grounded him. Despondent and
disheartened, Umber wallows in despair, stuck in his room in the basement
(close to rock bottom).
Will he get to meet Princess Cindy? Is there a chance of a happily ever
after, even in today's cynical world?
There's only one way to find out!

 3. ICSS Spring Trip to Portsmouth (25 Feb 2012)
"Dear Exco,
Solemates is over. What next?"
...This is what you'll be asking in a few days' time, when our Major Event
really is over.
Fret not, because we in the Exco are known for our long-term planning
ability! (Some of us, at least)
If you feel like you're in a rut because of schoolwork, labs, Major Event
rehearsals (or you're just too plain lazy to plan your own trip), we've got
the perfect cure for you. On the 25th of February, the Imperial College
Singapore Society will be organizing a trip to *Portsmouth*, which,
unsurprisingly, is home to a port.
"But, Exco!" we hear you cry out. "What's there to do in Portsmouth?"
Never fear! We've got you covered. Portsmouth is home to a fantastic
shopping district, with prices better than Westfield, High Street, and
definitely Oxford Street. If retail therapy's not your thing, why not try
the huge variety of seafood available all across Portsmouth? Because, as
you know, Portsmouth has a port. With fish. There'll be fish and chips,
mussels, fish and chips, oysters, fish and chips, clams, fish and chips,
fresh, whole fish, fish and chips, crabs, fish and chips, lobsters, fish
and chips, and scallops galore. Don't forget to try the fish and chips!

 1. 9 more days to Solemates!
Dear brothers and sisters,
Countdown: *9 days* to Solemates.
Looking at the scarce amount of time we have left until the 18th of Feb,
it’s easy for anxiety and panic to set in, especially with so many things
left to do. However, each time I’m present at rehearsals, I’m encouraged
and heartened by the energy, spirit, and laughter of everyone in the
Solemates Cast & Crew who put their all into making this Major Event an
unforgettable one. To all the Cast & Crew of Solemates, keep up the good
work!
For the rest of us who didn’t get a chance to be part of the Solemates
production team, not to fear. Tickets are still on sale, and can be
purchased from any of your friends in the Cast & Crew. It will be a fitting
reward indeed for the production team to perform in front of a full house,
so please lend them your support!
At the same time, purchasing a ticket will not only guarantee you a night
filled with laughter, entertainment and possibly tear-jerking moments, but
also a chance to give to charity. All proceeds from Solemates will go to
World Vision, a relief, development and advocacy organisation dedicated to
working with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and
injustice. What’s more, your ticket will gain you a free bottle of Tiger
Beer along with some light refreshments!
If you haven’t got a ticket yet - wait no longer. Click on the links in the
next article to find out more, or watch the wonderful trailer on Youtube.
In addition, we are *looking for a video camera* for the recording of
Solemates. If you are the proud owner of a video camera, or know someone
else who would be willing to loan their baby to us on 18 Feb, do contact
Yijing at majorevent(a)ic-singsoc.net asap!
*Solemates - finding him was no mean feet!
*
Have you found yours yet? (Especially with Valentine's Day around the
corner :D)
Love,
Joshua
P.S I hope these pictures from our Combined Warm-up session at last
Saturday's rehearsal will serve to portray the 'back-breaking' work we go
through!

 2. ICSS Major Event 2012 - Solemates (18 Feb 2012)
*Imperial College Singapore Society proudly presents Major Event 2012 -
Solemates.*
<http://e.groupspaces.com/click/1uxvk-1ez6m-sx2rfwz71?u=http%3A%2F%2Ffiles.g…>

Ahhhhhh... Solemates is over!
Well, it will be, soon.
And when it is, we'll have just the thing for you, whether you're an actor,
spectator or crew! Because we're planning a trip to... *Portsmouth*!
If you feel like you're in a rut because of schoolwork, labs, Major Event
rehearsals (or you're just too plain lazy to plan your own trip), we've got
the perfect cure for you. On the 25th of February, the Imperial College
Singapore Society will be organizing a trip to Portsmouth, which,
unsurprisingly, is home to a port.
We will be departing from the *Beit Quadrangle at 8.00 am* on the *25th of
Feburary*, and we should be back by 9.00 pm at night. For more information

 5. UKSSC Captain's Ball League updates: 26-10 win to Imperial!
Here's a message from your Sports Officer, Yuxiang:
Hey everyone,
I bring good news for ICSS, yet again!
Today was Team Imperial Captain's Ball team's second match in the UKSSC
Captain's Ball Tournament. And it was an exciting match indeed; so much so
that I'm sure it would definitely be one of the most exciting matches of
the entire league!
The match began with Team Imperial blasting out in full-form from the
start. This amazing form saw them taking the lead nearly throughout the
entire game. Although the UCL side had several players who had clear height
advantages, our side fought hard and managed to execute counter-strategies
against our opponents. Even with the UCL team's strong retaliation and
heavy defence, our members were still able to score freely. Team
Imperial dominated all four quarters till the referee's last whistle,
ending the match with a *26-10 win*. *(This brings our tally to a 100%
victory record!)
*
*<http://e.groupspaces.com/click/1uxvk-1ez6m-sx2rfwz71?u=http%3A%2F%2Ffiles.g…>
*
Our next, and final match will be on * 22 Feb, Wednesday, 5pm at Wilson
House*. Do join us in witnessing our attempt to claim our first-ever UKSSC
Captain's Ball Champions title! :)

 1. ICSS Major Event 2012: Solemates (18 Feb 2012)

Solemates.*

Solemates is a story about a boy named Umber. Orphaned at a young age, he
was taken in by the Ella family. At first, things were bright: he had three
square meals a day, a roof over his head and a place to call home. But as
Umber grows up, the Ella family starts to make use of him. He washes the
dishes, does the laundry and even helps the twins with their homework.
Bullied and mistreated, Umber longs for a better life.
One day as the Ella family is going grocery shopping, Umber learns about
the Queen’s Ball. Men from all the land are flocking to win Princess
Cindy’s heart and Umber sees this as his chance. He waits eagerly for the
day to come.
On the morning of the Queen’s Ball, his twin stepbrothers, Mozza and
Salmon, inform Umber that Pa has grounded him. Distraught, Umber wallows in
despair as his is stuck in his room in the basement.
Will he ever get to meet Princess Cindy? Will they ever live happily ever
after? Only one way to find out.

 2. UKSSC Captain's Ball League updates: 14-10 win to Imperial!
Here's a message from our Sports Officer Yuxiang:
Dear all,
I bring good news from the UKSSC Captain Ball Tournament's arena at Wilson
House yesterday.
It was ICSS's first match, and the first of the series as well. With a very
strong strength of 14 players, Team ICSS faced off the team from LSE. As a
spectator, I was treated to a fantastic perfroamance with our team fully
dominating and sweeping the points in the first quarter. The scoring streak
continued in the second quarter, but the tide turned against us as we lost
several points due to carelessness in the third, resulting in our lead to
be reduced to just 1 point before the final set. In the last quarter
however, our team regained composure and put up some great
counter-attacking plays, bringing the final score to a *14-10 win to
Imperial*!!
I would like to thank and congratulate the team which is led by team
captain Ashley Ng, and his vice-captain Esther Chan, on this great start to
the tournament. At the same time, we'll be playing against UCL at *4pm next
Wednesday* at *Wilson House*. Please drop by to support our athletes!
Thank you and see you there. :)

 6. Message from the British Council
As part of the British Council’s series of Policy Dialogues, we are
organising a symposium on* Integrating International Students on 1 and 2
Feb 2012*. This is an event for participants to share research findings,
examples of best practice and also practical tips on how their
organisations go about the task of integrating the international student

website .

You can imagine that for a topic as such, we would love to hear from the
students. As such, we have come up with a simple survey to get a sense of
students’ sentiments. We want to hear from the students if they think
enough is being done, or what other suggestions they may have, etc.
Would you please help to forward the link below? It should take no more
than 5 minutes to complete the survey.
