1. President's Note
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Singaporeans,
The start of autumn term 2010 is merely a week away and I am
sure everyone is eagerly looking forward to the start of the new
academic year. I hope that the summer break has been a meaningful
and enjoyable one for everyone.
The night of 9th September saw the conclusion of Allure, the
finale of our medley of summer events. For all of you who were
there to join us for UKBound, I hope that the night was as
enjoyable for you as it was for the committee organizing the
event. Let me take this opportunity to congratulate Ms Amanda
Chin and Mr Jason Cheng for the excellent show they put up in
representing Imperial College Singapore Society at the pageant,
and a job well done to Jason for bringing home title of Mr
Congeniality.
At the same time, I would too like to congratulate the sportsmen
and sportwomen of ICSS who fought hard to bring glory to the
society. The results for the five sports are:
Touch Rugby - 1st
Football - 2nd
Floorball - 3rd
Netball - 5th
Basketball - 5th
Overall - 3rd (out of 9 represented universities)
A big thank you also goes out to all the seniors who took time
off to help out with the pre-departure briefing at Raffles City
as well as Sojourn 2010 at Sentosa. I am sure many of you
thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity of getting to know our
freshers.
It is the time of the year again to herald in the new batch of
freshers. As seniors of the society, we have all been through
this phase filled with excitement and uncertainty. Let us come
together as a society and warmly welcome the freshers to our
family over in London. I hope that every senior will be generous
and forthcoming in lending a helping hand to the freshers and get
them settled into the new environment as quickly as possible.
This has always been a tradition of the ICSS and let us proudly
hand this down to our juniors.
The new academic year also signifies the start of the chain of
events the ICSS will be hosting in London. The month of October
will be a jam-packed one from beginning to end, starting from
Fresher’s Pick-up and Walkabout on the first weekend. In the
second weekend, OGLs will once again be called into action for
Fresher’s Tour. This will then be followed by Fresher’s
Picnic on the third weekend, where we will be looking to host a
number of friendly sports matches against our neighbours in
London. Capping off the activities in October will be the new
ICSS Fiesta! Read on in this prelude to Autumn of Kaya and Toast
to find out more about all the exciting activities this October.
I wish all of you a great start to the upcoming academic year.
On behalf of the ICSS executive committee, I look forward to
meeting all of you over in London.

2. Activities for Freshers
-----------------------------------------------------------------
As work begins to set in with the start of the academic term,
don't forget to take breaks to keep the stress levels low and the
happy index high. Why not join us in making the Freshers part of
our ICSS family? We have the following activities planned up
specially for Freshers and we hope to see you there too in the
fun! So mark these dates on your calendar now.. :)
*1. Freshers' Pick-up (2 Oct 2010, 8 am)*
Once again this year, we will be picking up the Freshers' from
the airport and sending them to their halls! If you are taking
the flight SQ 322 that lands at 05:55h on 2 Oct (or any other
flight that suits the pick-up time), we welcome you to join us on
our Freshers' shuttle bus. There will be a trailer together with
the bus to ensure sufficient space for lugggages. Do note the
following -- (1) the bus will leave Heathrow at 8 am, (2) we
will be receiving the Freshers' outside the Departure Hall and
(3) the bus will be going to the main areas of Wilson House,
Evelyn Gardens and Princes Gardens. If interested, please contact
me at secretary(a)ic-singsoc.net?subject=Freshers'%20Pick-up%20 by
27 Sept 2010.
*2. Freshers' Walkabout (2 Oct 2010, 12-4 pm)*
A short and sweet walkabout to familiarize our Freshers with
their surrounding neighbourhood. Be that senior to share your
wealth of knowledge about living in London with the Freshers and
I'm sure they will appreciate it greatly.
*3. Tour London (9 Oct 2010)*
Take this opportunity to discover about the latest batch of
Freshers as each OG goes on thier own exciting journey of
exploration around London. The suggested route includes places
like Westminster Bridge, Buckingham Palace, the London Eye.. as
well as 'attractions' like Oxford and Regent Street!
*4. Freshers' Picnic (16 Oct 2010)*
Get your picnic mats ready and sport attire as ICSS sets off to
Hyde Park for our annual Freshers' Picnic. This year's will come
with a twist - more information will be provided in the next
issue of Kaya and Toast! Watch out!

winter than to Ski! Here are the details:

morning (i.e. just in time for boxing day sales!)

the resort are limited and it will help a lot to express interest
early!

4. ICSS Fiesta (Halls)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Start the new academic year with a bang this autumn by cooking up
a storm! We are inviting all seniors to return to their 1st year
Halls to join the new freshers in preparing a feast to kick off
the term. The best part is, the ICSS is *subsidizing your feast*!
The ICSS Fiesta will be a series of cooking competitions which
will be running through the entire academic year.
To make things a little more exciting, we will be running an
ICSS Fiesta Food Photography competition! Before you devour all
the scrumptious dishes you have prepared, take the whackiest
photos of the food / your group with the food / your group
preparing the food. Let your creative juices flow alongside the
delicious juices and stand a chance to win delicious Singaporean
commodities which will definitely come in useful in the victory
feast. :-)
* **Fiesta period**: 18th to 31st October 2010
* **Deadline for competition**: 31st October 2010
If you should have any queries, please feel free to post them to
any executive committee member or simply send an email to
secretary(a)ic-singsoc.net.

5. A message from our Sports Officer..
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,
Calling for all sport enthusiasts! ICSS will be having numerous
sports events in London. There will be regular badminton, tennis,
floorball, football and touch rugby sessions throughout the year.
Therefore, **please bring your rackets, shoes and sport
equipments**!!
Nottingham Games, the biggest sports event amongst the Singapore
societies in UK, will be held on 13 November 2010. We will be
travelling down to Nottingham as a society to compete with other

having fun and getting together is always the main aim for any
ICSS’s event. There will be sports from football, badminton to
games like amazing race. More details will be confirmed.
See all of you in London!
