Come along to practice the SRT skills you've learned at tree training and see some of the best caves in the UK :) *When* Friday 10/11 - Sunday 12/11 *Where *Yorkshire *Membership* you need membership to join weekend trips which is £30.00 (membership lasts the entire year) *Price *£45 however if this is your first trip with us you get a discount making it *only £25* for the entire weekend. *SRT *(Single Rope Technique) You need to have learned how to do: -Ascending -Descending -Change over -Deviation -Rebelay before coming on this trip. We have been keeping track of what everyone has learned and want you to be as confident as possible before taking you in a cave. There are two more tree training sessions before the trip so there is still time to learn if you come to both sessions. If you've already learned some skills you can practice them and learn the rest. You can still sign up and will be given a place but *it will be conditional on you learning the remaining skills* at the next two sessions. *Sign up! Reply quickly to make sure you get a place! If you can drive the Union Minibuses you will get £6 off your ticket and you will be guaranteed a place on the trip so let us know. We will meet in *stores on Tuesday (7/11) at 17:00 to pack kit*. You do not need any equipment of your own, we will provide everything you could possibly need in a cave. *Please only buy the trip fee once your spot on this trip has been confirmed*. We aim to confirm spots by the end of this week and an email with more details will be sent out then. *How the trip works* We will set off in the minibus on Friday evening around 17:30 from outside Beit Halls and return there on Sunday evening around 23:30. We will stop at a supermarket somewhere on the way to buy all the food we need for the weekend and also for you to buy Friday's dinner as well as snacks or drinks. Saturday’s and Sunday’s meals will be cooked as a group at the hut, and the cost is included in the trip cost. Accommodation, transport and all equipment are also covered by the trip cost. On Saturday we'll usually wake up around 8:30, cook breakfast and plan our trips in an open discussion while we eat. We can have fairly long caving trips on Saturdays for those who want it, but sometimes a few of us decide to have a nice day on the surface instead. We'll aim to get underground right after midday, lest we anger the caving gods. Trips can range from 3 to 8 hours, depending on the cave chosen and how people are feeling. Sunday will run much the same, only trips will be shorter since we need to drive back to London in the evening as well. We'll be staying at the YSS <https://www.yssuk.com/accom/ourfacilities.html> cottage in Yorkshire. *Upcoming trips* For the Yorkshire trips you need Single Rope Technique or SRT which you can learn at tree training which runs every Wednesday in first term 1-5pm (but you can turn up any time and stay as long as you like) in Princes Gardens. We'll be in Prince's Gardens opposite Ethos. You can turn up any time between 1-5 and it will probably take 1 to 2 hours for you to learn all the SRT (Single Rope Technique) skills but you can stay as long as you like and don't have to learn everything in one session. Everyone *must* have been to at least one tree training before going on a Yorkshire trip and typically we require two. So if you want to go on Y1 (10-12/11), Y2 (1-3/12) or Winter tour (15-22/12) then come along. For people who learn best if they can go home and review what they learned in their own time we have an SRT guide attached to this email that Una helpfully made and a lot of people find this very useful for helping them learn. As well as a happy resident of Bedrock (the Flintstones) you are now encouraged to come in any cave-related dress. Stalactites? Man from Yorkshire? Dinosaur? Cannibals? Cavers? Mud? YES, it's all valid. So expand your horizons and get creative. This year we leave from the Union at 6:30 and venture into the city for a horrific night :D We'll reward the best dresser with two drinks -> Voting is before we leave at 6:30 Kit unpacking starts at 5pm (for those on Wales 2). (or welcome back if you never left) Here’s a brief overview of what we do during term time: Weekend Trips *You need no previous caving experience or equipment to go on trips - *All the equipment you might need is provided by the club. If you’d like to join the first one, reply to the sign-up email that will be sent out on Thursday. It won’t be possible to reserve a spot until that email is sent out. Sign up emails will usually be sent out two weeks before the trip. For the best idea of what these trips entail, visit our wonderful website (i <http://union.ic.ac.uk/rcc/caving>mperialcaving.com) where we upload trip reports and photos for all our weekend trips and have a calendar of the upcoming trips. Every two weeks we’ll drive a minibus full of kit and keen cavers from Beit Quad on the Friday night, returning on the Sunday night, aching and satisfied with two solid trips under our belts. Typical destinations include Wales, Yorkshire, the Mendips and Derbyshire, where we sleep, cook and relax together in cosy caving huts to hide from our responsibilities. We’ll make sure everyone caves as much as they like, and that the trips are challenging but not dangerous – if you don’t fancy caving on the Sunday just let us know and you can relax on the surface instead. Incidentally the best caving locations are also prime hiking locations so you can just as well go for a walk if you prefer. The first two trips to Wales won’t require you to have learnt any rope skills, but to attend later trips to Yorkshire or Derbyshire you must have come to rope training (see below) at least once and learnt the necessary skills to traverse caves on ropes. To come on any trips you’ll need to purchase the annual caving membership (£30), and the trip fee will be ~£45, however if this is your first trip with us you'll get a *£20 discount* making the trip fee only £25. All travel, food, accommodation and kit are included in the £45 trip fee. The trips planned for this term are: 13/10-15/10: Wales 1 27/10-29/10: Wales 2 10/11-12/11: Yorkshire 1 (SRT required) 1-3/12 Yorkshire 2 (SRT required) 15/12-22/12: Winter Tour - Yorkshire (SRT Required) Rope Training Aka Tree Training runs *every Wednesday in Autumn term, 1-5pm In Princes Gardens,* but you can turn up whenever you like and stay for as long as you like – Just look out for some people hanging in ropes in front of Ethos sports centre. These sessions will teach you the basics of SRT (Single Rope Technique), which is needed to visit vertical caves in Yorkshire or Derbyshire later in the year – many would say the best part of caving! You don’t need to sign up or buy membership to come to these sessions – just turn up. It typically takes 1.5-2 hours to teach everything but everyone is different. We normally require people to have come to at least two sessions before going on a Yorkshire trip. There isn't one this week but *the first session is on the 11th* Pub Every *Tuesday, starting today, from 6pm onwards *we’ll meet in the *union bar or 568* for a couple of drinks and we discuss the caves we’d like to do over the weekend and tell wild tales of past trips, some of which may even be true. Look out for someone wearing a muddy caving helmet and put a message in the whatsapp if you can't find us. If you’re coming on the next trip, or interested in future trips this is an opportunity to get to know us and ask questions before you get thrown underground with a bunch of strangers. You don’t need membership or to sign up, just turn up whenever you like. Hope to see you there!
