Easter Tour 2017 - Destination Budapest - 28th March-4th April

Hi all, ICCC goes caving abroad this Easter, in the lovely Hungarian hills of Bükk and Aggtelek. We are looking at taking around 8 cavers for a full week of caving and hiking. This email will cover: * -the dates, duration and location of the Tour* * -the logistics* * -an overview of the programme* * -how much it will cost* * -how to apply* Location of the caving region (Bükk mountains). *Dates:* The Easter Tour takes place after the end of the Spring term, and this year will start on* Tuesday 28th March and end on Tuesday 4th April*. The dates of departure and arrival may fluctuate by one or two days depending on the flight availability, but we will stay seven nights, with six full days on site. *Logistics:* We will fly out from one of the London airports to Budapest in the morning of the first day. On site, we will hire two 4-5person cars and drive over to the caving area, a 2h drive away. We will buy the week's worth of food and settle down at the accomodation. We will then drive back to Budapest on the last day, and fly back in the evening. *Overview of the programme:* We will have 6 full days on site, of which we'll spend around 4 caving, the others being for resting, sight-seeing in tourist caves, or hiking around in the lovely hills. caving days will generally consist of an early start to drive over to one of the caving areas (1h drive in places), and a 6-7h caving trip. There will be scope for both technical SRT trips and more horizontal caves. We are acquiring permits for some of those which have stunning formations and there will be at least one joint trip with a local caving group. *How much it will cost:* We aim to keep the cost between £250-£300 for a full week abroad. This includes the flights (~£100pp), food (£50pp), accommodation(£50pp) and car hire+ fuel (£100pp). *How to apply:* please email us <ic.caving(a)gmail.com> to apply, we will then ask you to *pay a non-refundable deposit of £150* to cover flight bookings and car hirings. Winter Tour! You have probably heard about it in stores, at the pub, in the minibus on your way to Wales or even remember it from Fresher’s Fair: This December: *ICCC goes to Yorkshire for a week of caving* The following email will provide you with the relevant information about this wonderful opportunity. IN BRIEF: -runs from *16th-23rd December* *-*you don’t need to attend the whole week (see: transport options) -but come to Tree training beforehand -great value for money, gourmet kitchen. -email ic.caving(a)gmail.com to sign up What is Winter Tour? A full week of caving spent in Yorkshire, the best vertical caving (SRT) destination of the UK. A total of 5-6 possible SRT trips in the best and most varied cave systems of the area such as Easegill, Gaping Ghyll, Notts pot and many more. As well as learning advanced SRT techniques and navigation, and polishing your skills, you may learn to rig (ie: put the ropes in) a cave. Where, when, how? We will be staying at the North Pennine Club (NPC) cottage in *Greenclose*, North Yorkshire. The accomodation is first class with a huge kitchen, warm showers, a superb drying room and loads of space in the wood-fire heated common room. We will drive up on the *16th Decembe*r, meeting at 12.00pm in stores to load a 9 seater minibus (see transport options), and drive back on the *23rd December* to arrive in London in the early evening. *Delicious food, great caves, lively company!* Transport options? Minibus We only have 9 seats in the minibus because we require the rest of the space for vast quantities of caving gear and rope (and food). Train The closest train station is *Clapham, North Yorkshire*. It's about 30 minutes walk away, or we can pick you up if you arrive in the evening or early morning. Contact me if you need any help getting the right trains and finding a cheap ticket. *Your train expenses are your own.* What kit to bring (get in touch for additional advice)? As usual, you will need a sleeping bag for the cottage. You will pack your caving kit on the Tuesday beforehand. It is a good idea to bring -A non-cotton, synthetic *thermal* top is highly recommended (see Helly Hansen’s for a look at what I’m talking about). -a *balaclava or buff* to wear underground or on the walk to the caves. -*hiking boots* in case you want to walk around the area, -your own *caving gloves* maybe less important but really nice. How much will it cost? The trip fees are worked out on a per person basis, but the minibus costs are split up equally between everyone, regardless how long you spend with us: this is because we need to bring the gear and rope up to Yorkshire. In the last few years, a full week of caving cost between *£90-110pp*, and half a week around *£50-60* (excluding train tickets). Signing up If you want to sign up, email me on ic.caving(a)gmail.com. Caving first aid training - Tuesday 6th, 18:30 in Blackett LT 2

Hi all, *What*: Caving first aid training *When*: 18:30, Tuesday 6th Dec. *Where*: Blackett (Physics Department) Lecture Theature 2 Join us on Tuesday evening for our annual caving first aid training course. Here you will learn the basics of wilderness first aid with a specific emphasis on caving. This is highly recommended for cavers of all levels, and especially for new members of the club who are beginning to tackle more challenging trips on Winter Tour and in the New Year. The session will be split between an introductory talk and practical exercises, culminating in a series of scenarios in which you'll use your new found skills to assess and treat casualties. Blackett LT2 is a bit tricky to find - enter Blackett from Prince Consort Road, and take the stairs or lift DOWN to level 1. Alternatively enter from the Sherfield walkway or Huxley, and walk through the Blackett and go DOWN to level 1. The lecture theatres are on the left out of the lift, and will be signposted.
