Dear all, I'd like to start by congratulating everyone this weekend who entered the London Cup, and especially Katharina, Paul, Erik and Stella who came joint first with Cambridge! I'm afraid I haven't got the victory photo to send out to all of you, but you'll be able to admire their trophy at the session tomorrow. This week Mike will be back to talk about leads and signals, and to give us some more challenging boards to play. The session will, as usual, be at 6pm in Meeting Rooms 1&2. Finally, I'd also like to thank everyone for not only trying bridge club out, but also for consistently coming along and playing every week, it's fantastic to have such a large cohort. It's coming up to the last few weeks of term now, and in fact we have only got three sessions left before the holidays! - but don't worry, we're going to try and get as much out of them as we can; here's the basic rundown of our remaining sessions: * Tomorrow (1st December): Teaching session with Mike * 8th December: Second mini-tournament * 15th December: Christmas Drinks Party We will also be holding an election at some point during these last few weeks to elect two new committee members, as the club is currently lacking a Treasurer and Secretary. This will most likely be held at the end of the session on the 8th; if anybody would like to run for a position then you are more than welcome to do so - if so then please get in contact with me, at the moment there is only one candidate for each role. Hi all, Tomorrow we will be having Mike, a coach from Young Chelsea, coming in to do a teaching session for us! This will mainly be focused on beginners, but there will be plenty of time for everyone to ask questions and discuss hands with him, so I hope lots of you will be able to make it as it will be a fun and informative session for all. Entries for the London Cup have been put in, it is taking place next Saturday at LSE; I will be emailing details to the relevant people during the week, feel free to ask me any questions during tomorrow's session. Hi everybody, Well done to everyone who played in the tournament last week! We had a great turnout and some interesting contracts - I'd especially like to congratulate our three winning partnerships. We'll be holding these mini-tournaments regularly throughout the year so make sure to keep an eye out for them. I'd like to quickly mention membership again - I've noticed that there are still some people who haven't purchased it yet; thank you to everyone who has, or provided an explanation. This Monday will be same time, same place (6pm in meeting rooms 1 and 2), we will be back to having a short lesson at the beginning followed by play. Look forward to seeing you all tomorrow! Dominic

Dear all, Tomorrow will mark a month since our first session, and so to celebrate this we will be holding our first mini-tournament! As a result of this, we will not be holding a lesson at the beginning of next session; the first half hour or so will be casual play, and once everyone has arrived (and a movement worked out) we will begin the tournament. This will last around an hour (depending on the number of pairs involved), and afterwards we will go back to normal play while the scores and winners are totted up - there'll be a couple of small prizes for the top places so bring along your best game! Afterwards, everyone is invited down to the Union for a couple of drinks and a chat. Venue and time are as normal - Meeting Rooms 1&2, 6.00pm, Monday 10th November. Hi everybody, Another busy session last week, let's keep it up! This week at the start there will be a short talk on some more bidding techniques as well as an introduction to scoring - as usual feel free to skip this and start playing straight away if it's all stuff you know. The date for the London Cup has been confirmed as the 29nd November, the deadline for entries is the 22nd so there is still plenty of time to enter, just send me an e-mail. Thank you to everybody who has already expressed interest; I encourage all to consider entering, playing in a tournament is a great way to improve and give you a better insight into why bidding works as it does. A big thank you to everyone who has brought membership so far - I really do ask that everyone else do this soon, the link is https://www.imperialcollegeunion.org/activities/a-to-z/103 and it really is important for us to continue. I understand that for a few people there are difficulties in purchasing from the union store, this is fine as long as you let me know. The next session will be tomorrow, Monday 3rd November, as usual at 6pm; but this week we will be in Activity Spaces 1&2 - this is the large room adjacent to the Meeting Rooms (where we usually play), so you shouldn't have any difficulty finding us, and this is the only room change this term. Dear all, It was wonderful to see so many of you back again this Monday, as well as some new faces! Please do keep on coming down, Ive had a great time playing with some of you and it really looks like everyone is getting a lot more confident, I saw contracts at the 6 level more than once. The next few paragraphs are the essential info, you only need to read the other sections if they apply to you. The first thing Id like to mention is membership. The union page for bridge is https://www.imperialcollegeunion.org/activities/a-to-z/103 where membership can be purchased it is only £5 and allows us to continue providing the sessions, as well as subsidising the events that will be available throughout the year. Next week we will be meeting same time, same room that is Meeting Rooms 1&2 at 6pm on Monday 27th October. If youre having trouble finding us, give me a call on 07748995181 and Ill try and find you Ill be sending out a reminder e-mail about the session on Monday. Also, Id like to introduce some pub night bridge sessions. These will be held in addition to the Monday evening sessions, provide a chance to play and practice in an informal setting, and will be scored similarly to Rubber. We wont be holding them for a couple of weeks yet, but be sure to look out for them! London Cup I mentioned the London Cup in the previous e-mail, I have received a couple of responses in regards to participating, but if you havent done so already then please email imperialbridgeclub(a)gmail.com <mailto:imperialbridgeclub@gmail.com> if you are interested. You are welcome to join either as a partnership or as an individual (we will organise solo entries into partnerships), and it promises to be a fun day. I cant as of yet give a definite date as LSE are still organising the room booking, but it will most likely be towards the end of November. Beginners Lessons Its great to see how far everyone has come along in the last two weeks, and I cant even imagine how good everyone will be two weeks from now. Hopefully some of the info on the bidding sheets is starting to sink in, I will continue to bring some copies along to the next few sessions just in case. Ive also attached them to this e-mail if youve lost your copy. Next week we will discuss overcalls and pre-emptive bids at the beginning of the session, along with some play strategies. Hi everyone, Thank you to everybody who came along on Monday, it was great to get to know you all and it looked like we had some pretty good bridge being played by the end! I'm sorry that the Union had a teetotal night, but come along again this Monday as I'm assured that we will be able to grab a drink there after the session. For anyone who couldn't make it to our first session, we'd love for you to come along to our next session which will be this Monday, 20th October at 6pm in Meeting Room 2. We will be holding another, smaller introduction session for new players, so you don't have to have played before. For everyone who came to our last session, there will be a slightly more advanced lesson followed by play like last week. For the more advanced players, I will be starting to come around and ask whether you would be interested in taking part in the London Cup, which this year is being held at LSE. If this is something you would like to get involved in, feel free to send an email to imperialbridgeclub(a)gmail.com and I'll give you some more information. The First Session!

Dear all, For our returning members - welcome back to another year of bridge! For our newcomers, may I take this opportunity to welcome you to Imperial's best society. I'll start off with the basic information. Bridge club will be meeting for the first time on Monday 13th October at 6pm in Meeting Rooms 1&2, drinks and snacks will be provided. If you can't make this session, then (in a similar vein to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) please do not panic - you are more than welcome in lieu to come to our second session the week after; you're not expected to buy membership for these first couple of sessions so come along, try us out, and become instantly enamoured with the king of the card games! The session will last approximately two hours, but if you can't stay for the whole thing then don't hesitate to come along anyway and leave early. Meeting Rooms 1&2 are in the Union building, they are fairly well indicated but if you're having trouble finding them then call me on 07748995181 and I'll come and rescue you. For the first few sessions we will be conducting some lessons and workshops to teach bridge from scratch to those who haven't played before; these will consist of a short presentation and some interactive activities so that you'll be playing by the end of the first session. For new members who can already play bridge, then we'd love for you to come along and jump straight into some games - partnerships will be organised on the day. After the session we'll be heading down to the Union for some drinks and a chat. That's all for this week's e-mail; a reminder about the session will be sent on Monday.
