Hi all, I'm forwarding a message from one of our podcast partners: I,Science magazine. Link to fb event: https://www.facebook.com/iscienceimperial/posts/133736965866168 I,Science Workshops Want to up-skill your sci-comm? I,Science is running a series of workshops (designed by our own science communication students) to help the imperial community gain practical science communication skills! Register here! https://forms.office.com/r/0eM2wHD3ep This month coming up we have Thursday 24th March 10:00 Using Design Thinking Design thinking is a strategy for creative problem solving focusing on empathy, expansive thinking, and experimentation - and is championed by some of the biggest companies of the world, from tech to finance giants. This workshop will be a dive into the Design Thinking - where we will explore the fundamentals and get everybody participating in some of the empathy-driven exercises that create a basis for any design thinking workshop. A must-have for the CV. About your tutors - Sofia Hurst’s background is in the tech industry, having worked several years at IBM. In that time she trained in Design Thinking and worked her way up to Creator level, ideating and carrying out workshops for senior clients. She is a passionate believer that good design needs to start with the user and aims to have empathy at the centre of all Design Thinking workshops to reach for a kinder, better world. Ingrid Espinosa is currently taking her MSc Science Communication studies at Imperial College. With experience in public health research for policy and systems thinking, she has used design thinking in ideating research studies, empowering patient groups and promoting community health in the Philippines. 11:30 Writing for Journalism Writing is hard enough, but writing for journalism (whether that be for print newspapers, or for online media outlets) requires a very specific set of skills. In this session, we will be covering the basics of writing feature-length stories. How do we distil a compelling story about science and technology from a generic starting point? How do we flesh out the story with details, facts and interviews? How should features be structured? And finally, how do we go about pitching those ideas to publications? About your tutor - Jacklin Kwan is our very own editor of I, Science, and is also a freelance journalist having written for Wired UK, the Manchester Mill, Current Affairs etc. She has work experience in newsrooms at The Straits Times and Asian Scientist Magazine, and moreover, she is currently a media intern at Imperial College London’s communications team where she writes stories about the research happening on campus! Price: We are running a pay what you can system, with a suggested donation of £3 - £5 which will go towards producing our amazing magazine and running more workshops!
