Erm, small technical problem, I think the description of tech manager that was meant to go out is: TECHNICAL MANAGER To be a good technical manager, you need to have a passion for broken technology and error messages ... only kidding! :P Most of our stuff 'just works' and keeps on working with little/no maintenance, but when things go wrong, it's your job to sort it out. If you're the hands-on type who enjoys taking things apart, you'll be pleased to know the eject buttons in the CD players could do with a little attention! Also our digital playout system needs improving, and we've just bought ourselves some shiny new servers and there's a lot of stuff we could make them do. Some knowledge of Linux/programming/networks is ideal, but by no means essential - you can learn on the job or by asking ex-techs (if you're a Computing or ISE student, this will put you literally miles ahead of the people on your course). All in all it's great fun, and only takes as much time as you want to put in (as with all things though, the more you put in, the more you'll get out of it and the better the station will be!). By Union "law" we need to have a high percentage of our members attend (70% I think) for it to be official - Because of this we usually make it good fun, get the serious stuff out of the way nice and early and then have a few drinks. It is the event where we will chose next years new committee, positions which anyone in radio can stand for, ranging from Head of Music to Station Manager. The AGM will start on Wednesday at 6PM in the shared studio To give you an idea of some of the jobs that need doing next year I got this years committee to write a few short paragraphs: Head of Programming (Andy) The HoP carries out most of their work in the first few weeks of term and is responsible for: 1. Coordinating the training of new presenters 2. Arranging a show time for each show 3. General upkeep of the schedule (eg. deleting show slots that are no longer being used to give to new presenters) At the beginning of each term, the HoP finds themself almost giving shows away to anybody who wants one. As time passes and a working radio schedule is constructed, the HoP can work on tweaking the schedule. This could be done by moving shows of similar genres so as they are broadcast consecutively or at the same time on different days. Being a committee member, the HoP also helps with decision making on issues as varied as new website designs to what equipment should be bought. Head of Music (Lia) Being head of music means you control all music! You are the BOSS. Well, actually, its not that glamourous...you deal with music going in and music going out. Music going in = promo cds, mp3's, music going out = sustain, playlists, music team blog. For this you must be master at excel and googlemail to keep everything in check. You get to be head honcho of the music team; a dedicated group of awesome peoples who'll review cd's and interview bands and sometimes even help rip cd's into the sustain service. You must be organised, sociable, have a broad interest in music (none of this 'it isn't alternative enough' crap) and be willing to be contactable 24-7 when people forget where their gig is or suddenly need the digital recorder! A good knowledge in cubase/audacity is good for mixing and editing interviews. Also, there is a lot of blagging involved and ass kissing - its media darling! All in all it's a really good position; you get to keep in touch with whats going on in music, every now and again you'll get some really great bands come in a do live sessions or a funny interview. And most importantly, your music team will become close friends. IC Radio Treasurer (COnnor) The position of treasurer is a vital one in icradio given the amount of money we have and the type of equipment we have to buy. Essebtially you have to have a financial head on you with a sound judgement on what should and should not be bought for the greater good of the society. The biggest part of the role is compilig the budget proposal. Aprt from that and reimbursing other members it's a way to be fully involve in the icradio, without being too technical! Also if you're a cynic, it's a top asset to have on your CV and for interviews!! Technical Manager (Chris) I'm not going to try and make this position sound TOO appealing, as I think Oli would make the perfect technical manager and I really like the idea of handing over to him... No pressure Oli, do whatever you want to do, but IF you choose to run for tech manager you will have infinite support from me and you will LOVE it, plus it'll put you miles ahead of everyone else on your course trust me :P Station Manager (me, Dan) As Station Manager you are the representative for IC RADIO. You have to be able to communicate with the Union, national organisations and most importantly the members of this society. It is a massively rewarding position, but also a big time sink. If anything happens with the society then you have to be there, leading from the front. Good time management is a must, as is a desire to really improve our society and drive it forwards. Being the premier officer in a society as big as ours isn't an easy job, but it is an experience you won't forget or regret.
