Awards galore!

Hello everyone! It's the end of the year :-( We want to say goodbye to all of you before you disappear for the summer so: Come down to the Union Bar on Tuesday the 25th June for a few drinks from 7 o'clock and THE IC RADIO BANTERWAGON AWARDS That's right, we're going to be giving out some (genuinely good, probably alcoholic) prizes for some of the most fun, imaginative, informative and unique shows. It's all self nominated so drop icr(a)imperial.ac.uk an email with a link to your best show and the committee will pick out the ones we like. It's all fun so nominate a show (it'll take seconds) and then come along on Tuesday. A reminder that if this is your last year here and you're leaving us, we want to know! Aislinn speaks: "Even if you think your show is crap (which any that I have listened to are not!!) I urge you all to give a thought to entering. When I won Best Newcomer Bronze they even told me that my audio let me down but that they were really impressed with my written application. So many lols." There are loads of categories and definitely one that suits you, from specialist music, to speech, to journalistic, to just having a lovely voice. Look them up and get in touch if you want any help putting a short entry together. Definitely worth entering. See you all on Tuesday! Bear with them whilst they build you all a lovely, reliable and useful radio station to use and thank them bye buying them drinks if you ever see them at work (they don't get paid except with appreciation, so be as generous as you can) As I write, the station is up and running, but don't rely on Rivendell at the moment.

Tech progress

Hey y'all, So I've just got back from an epic 35-hour-long marathon tech session with the fantastic Radio tech team. I'll give a full roundup when everything's sorted, but for the next couple of days, expect everything to be super-flaky, and show recording etc not to work. All should be normal by Wednesday... Also, everybody's custom show panels have gone in the upgrade, so do plan to come early to put them back together! The good news is that any computer will be able to edit your show playlists including, soon, the ones in the office. Thanks for bearing with us :) Max

Hey guys, Just in case you hadn't realised, the radio will probably be down between tomorrow and Sunday - and as the title says, COME AT 11am to the studios if you have any spare time. No tech experience needed - only willingness to help out! You'll be kept busy :) And at the end of it all, we should have a fancy new touch-screen jingles interface. Fingers crossed. Max :)

IC Radio BanterWagon Awards & Big Techie Weekend

Hey radio lovers, Big congratulations to all of those who have received a Union Award (full list here: https://www.imperialcollegeunion.org/news/union-awards-2013) especially our radio natives Joe Letts, Christian Franke, Max Hunter, and Matt Allinson. I hope I haven't missed anyone out, if I have, I'm very sorry and feel free to proclaim your victory via the ICR Facebook page ;). There were a few more awards within the media group, namely Media Treasurer Slobodan and the dynamic duo over at STOIC Frank and Jonny. Well done to all, I'm very proud, and all very well deserved. :) The Student Radio Awards are now open for nominations and will be until about mid-July, so start working on those entries peeps. We've had a really great run of success here for the past few years, so let's keep it up! Check out some tips from yours truly and other past winners in the SRA newsletter below, and ICR alumnus and SRA expert Roushan's 5 Step Guide to Entering attached. If any of you would like a recommendation from me for the Best Newcomer category, feel free to shoot me an email. Some very exciting news from us is that this year, we're debuting the IC Radio BanterWagon Awards! As described by George, it's a light-hearted way of recognising all the great stuff you guys have done on the radio this year. We'll give prizes to any entry that makes us laugh/think/blows our minds. So if you think your show or any other show is worthy of some internal recognition, send us the show name and either a mini-clip or a link to/date of the best episode, to icradio(a)imperial.ac.uk. Unfortunately I'm still lab-bound for the next week or so, but Station Manager-elect George is working on getting us a venue and lining up some sexcellent categories, most likely to be held in the Union Bar on 25th of June (the last Tuesday of term). Staying with the theme of 'top tips for putting together your entry for the Student Radio Awards supported by BBC Radio 1 and Global Radio' (going to have to think of a catchier name than that...) I'm going to take a look at Best Newcomer and The Student Radio Chart Show Award - so let's begin! Best Newcomer - I spoke to some students who have previously won awards in the Best Newcomer category as to how they put together their entries and what they included. First up, it's Aislinn Hayes from IC Radio at Imperial College London who won her award when Professor Green and Emile Sande were topping the chart with Read All About It (was that really two years ago?!) She had this advice to give: "I think for the Best Newcomer category in particular a good written application is hugely important, because that's where you can really show your enthusiasm for working in radio. I also focused a lot on what I hoped to achieve with the station in the future, not just what I had done in my first year. As for the recommendation, ask someone who knows you well and knows how you work." Next up, we have silver award winner from 2012, Giles Gear from URN at the University of Nottingham:"This should be used as an opportunity for you to showcase your overall contribution to the station and the numerous ways you’ve been involved. Also, near death experiences are clearly favoured. I think presenting a live link one hundred feet in the air whilst clinging to a phone and resisting the temptation to scream expletives was enough to get me nominated on its own. Most of all, if you’ve had fun and loved every second of your student radio experience, make sure that shines through in your entry. P.S. Damn you Abbie McCarthy" Abbie won Gold in 2012 and will be featured in the website version of 'top tips' coming out over the weekend! Now, this advice wouldn't be complete without some tips from the judges, and this week those tips come curtesy of Tim Dye and Mark Farrington, who coordinate the judging of the awards. They have this to say: • Tell us your story about getting involved in the station • What you’ve done over the last year both off air and on air? • Have you made an impact on the station and done so with passion for student radio? • Your off air contribution is a bigger part than other awards – the audio is basically extra in this category. The Student Radio Chart Show Award - Did you host the Student Radio Chart Show this year? Fancy producing the Big Top 40 one day? If so, ENTER THIS CATEGORY! We go back to Tim and Mark for tips on entering this category: • If you hosted The Student Radio Chart Show – enter this category! • Judges are looking for an entry that followed the SRA chart show format/specifications - but done so in a creative way & with your own station’s feel • No written entry in this category – judges get comments from SRA exec & chart officer about your station’s part of syndication, did you meet deadlines etc… Right, that's enough tips for one day! Now on to the news coming from Student Radio for this week... Audioboo to be integrated with Twitter Great news for Student Radio - a new way to reach your audience has emerged! Remember the times when it was easy to look at Instagram photos on Twitter because the tweet would simply expand when you clicked on it? Well the same is now about to happen to Audioboo, which means when you tweet, your followers can simply listen to the audio rather than be taken to the Audioboo website. Very cool. Make sure to take a look at the Audioboo website to stay ahead of the game when it comes to multiplatform stuffs. Two Student Radio people in with a chance of becoming Blue Peter's next presenter! We'd like to say congratulations to Freddie Ingleby and Isaac Jones from LCR at Loughborough University and Shock Radio at Salford University who are through to the final ten contestants in the Blue Peter - You Decide! competition. Over 20,000 people entered the competition and up for grabs is the chance to become Blue Peter's next presenter. The final ten will be narrowed down to three by judges Myleene Klass, Eamonn Holmes and Ceallach Spellman - but from then it's the audience's choice as to who wins. IC Radio planned downtime - weekend of 15th/16th June

Hey guys, Just a heads-up that we'll be fixing, reinstalling, upgrading, and generally doing awesome things to all the ICRadio tech stuff on *Sat 15th and Sun 16th June* (two weeks' time). This means that, for most of the weekend, *don't rely on being able to do shows*. Rivendell (the jingle playout system) will be offline for most of the weekend, and there'll be significant disruption to most of the studio stuff throughout the whole period. Feel free to schedule for those days anyway, but chances are you won't be able to do anything. Email Christian if you'd like to do your show on another day - there are plenty of unused slots and I'm sure he can arrange something with you! Shows on that Friday (14th) afternoon/evening are also at risk, but we can probably work around that; please make sure you schedule your shows so we can plan around you... Thanks for bearing with us - and we hope you'll enjoy the lovely new fancy reliable radio, with lots of added new funky features on the playout system to streamline your shows and make them sound more professional than ever, and even more features in the pipeline! Free Gig tickets

Hi everyone, AKA were going to do an interview with James Skelly at his gig next Wednesday (12th June) but unfortunately they've had to cancel.
