Hey all! Hope you all had a very decent Easter and exams aren't keepin ya down! I had my first one yesterday, I'm still recovering from the shock ;) Some news : Head of Music elections Further to Matt's email below, please email him to vote in a new HoM for next year, the race is currently very tight as I've been told, and every vote counts. Also, if anyone at all is interested in helping out with the committee next year in a non-official or even fleeting capacity, you're more than welcome! I like to branch out and listen to as many different styles as I can, from the downright bizarreness of Electroacoustic to the most simplest Hip Hop grooves that you can't help but dance to in your kitchen (I can't be the only one who does that!). My wide taste in music partially comes from my philosophy of "music is music", no matter what genre or age, and I enjoy sharing this with other people and introducing them to styles that they might have never even heard of. As Head of Music, I would be able to widen IC Radio's potential audience and I also have some great ideas to perhaps introduce more social events and club nights to attract more students to our society. All in all, I think I would be a great Head of Music if given the opportunity. Thank You. Ronan McAdam: My passion for music was the main reason for joining ICRadio. During my first year, I hosted the Rock n Roll Happy Hour. Each week I would capture the spirit of the 50s, 60s or 70s to reach out to an audience that were unfamiliar with the music. To prepare, I would sort through thirty years of ever-changing music and genres to pick out the best. I loved, and still do love, finding out the stories behind the music, seeing the changes throughout the years and bringing it to an audience. As Assistant Station Manager during my second year, I became familiar and confident with sustain, Rivendell and the station as a whole. The main task of the Head of Music is to listen to all the cd’s that ICRadio receive, catalogue songs and update sustain. Far from finding them tedious, I would hugely enjoy all of these tasks. Above all, I want to increase the amount of listeners that we have and this task does not belong to head of promotions alone, but to everyone at ICRadio. Having zero listeners for most of the day and sustain playing out songs on repeat is a huge waste of resources and opportunity. I would play my part by uploading themed playlists for slots during which nobody is on air; rave music late on Friday night, a cheeky bit of funk/disco to get people moving on a Saturday evening? There is so much more music we could and should be sharing and we have plenty of free airtime to do it. Let’s use our resources as well as we can, attract more listeners and, something which is close to my heart, play that funky music. Andy Moore: I'm Andy, I run Your Neighbours Will Love This on Mondays at lunchtimes. If you haven't heard it, we basically mix a variety of dance music depending on our moods and tastes from the last week and hope that people listen in! I've loved running a radio show over the last 2 years and definitely want to keep it up and get more involved. The main thing I want to do is run a show playing exclusively tracks from the post that comes to the studio. It sounds like a lot of fun and it would show labels that we are grateful for their contributions as well as giving the audience a truly up-and-coming set of tunes! I'd try to have a look through sustain and weed out the shit nobody wants as well as seeing about the possibility of monitoring the genres/tags so that music of a similar type plays within say, an hour slot. In terms of the music that's already in the studio, I agree that we should digitalise the catalogue for ease of access. Might be a bit of work but surely the kind of thing I can do whilst half watching TV. Eamonn Postlethwaite: My name is Eamonn and I’d like to put myself forward for Head of Music for ICRadio because I love it to bits and would like to offer something back to such a friendly and enthusiastic society. I am only a measly first year but notwithstanding illness/exams I have broadcast every Monday since the beginning of the year and have grown to love being down in the radio suite, so having to spend time down there in a more official capacity won’t be a problem. I would resurrect the music blog on the website and use my position to blag free tickets/samplers for as much music as possible and fill it with reviews [from me and anyone who is interested] of gigs, albums, singles, or anything anyone has a radio-based interest in. IC Radio Technical Troubles

Dear Radio members, I hope you've had a lovely Easter vacation and had plenty of enjoyable revising. Unfortunately as of Sunday morning our web server Firestar has ceased to function due to power supply/voltage regulator issues. Please be aware that this means that both the website (including the listen again feature) and the live streaming capability are out of action in the near future. It may be possible to have a hacked together system running in the next few days and as always I will be working on finding a solution as will the rest of the technical team. I will keep you updated on the situation over the coming days, however if you have any questions you can reach me at technical(a)icradio.com. It's probably worth noting that little to no technical know-how or experience is required (Stephen Ingram - next year's IT Manager - and I will teach you all you need to know about the technicalities of managing Sustain!) The only requirement is that you love music (and loads of different kinds of it) and you have enough free time to listen to all the CDs we receive through the post and catalogue them or add them to Sustain - (we get sent loads of CDs before they get released - we found Adele's album unopened in a box somewhere!) and enough time to go to all the gigs which IC Radio gets invited to. If you've got an obsessive-compulsive streak and enjoy managing people to catalogue/rip the vast amounts of CDs and vinyls we've got (there are way more than what's inside the corridor and filing cabinets) that's also a bonus! And there's plenty of scope for organising Metric nights with live music and getting bands to do live sessions and all that jazz. The potential scope is huge - but you don't need to worry about technical literacy. Hello all, The role of head of music has become available as the elected officer, Christian, is off to do research in the netherlands next year (congrats!) The basic role consists of maintaining the music library and organising the playlist on sustain, this will be a particularly important role next year as our computer system is being replaced. You are also the main public facing point of contact with record labels and artist management. The role, however has a broad reach and if you are enthusiastic and have ideas can be a great platform to really shape the sound and direction of the station. Industrially, music officer is a widely respected role and innovative stuff done as H.O.M. would look good on the CV of anyone looking to go into the running of a radio station or general music industry work. This is a great entry level position if you want to join the committee, but also good for experienced (I.e old) members too If you would like to stand, email me with your name and a 250ish word manifesto by Saturday 27th April. Movie Night
