Hey everyone! Thanks for signing up to the icradio mailing list– Imperial College’s student radio station. I'll try not to abuse my newfound emailing power too much, I know how quickly those inboxes fill up post-fresher's fair. Fresher's Fair is always a little hectic and I feel like not everyone gets the full benefit of what we have to say in person, so it's best if I put the full deal about our station in an email for your perusal. If you don't feel like reading it all, fair enough - just looks for the coloured phrases and see if any of them intrigue you! A little introduction First and foremost we are a student radio station; broadcasting online, 24 hours a day. We have a sustain service which plays out music from our massive library and people come in to do their own shows. Because we are student radio it is a lot more laidback than a commercial station. We have loads of different and varied shows; talk, dance, rock, pop, indie – anything goes. The important thing is to have fun and get to know more people at university. Because of our fantastic history (IC RADIO has been running for well over 30 years now) the equipment and resources that we have are pretty unbeatable, and, speaking as a massive radio nerd myself, I absolutely adore our facilities. Once you have joined the society the door is pretty much open for you to use our gear. Basically, if there isn’t a show on then you can come in and have a practice on the decks etc in the studio - much cheaper and convenient than buying your own stuff and carting it to uni each year. Radio isn’t the only thing that we do. We have a very well equipped recording studio which a team of previous members have spent the last 3 years setting up. This can be used for recording and/or broadcasting live sessions on the air or doing more involved jobs (band demos/radio plays etc etc). We are pretty unique to have such a facility as a student radio and we're planning on holding lots of live sessions this year. They are open for anyone to turn up to and watch, and are held in our “shared studio” (completely separate to our production and recording studios, and shared with Photosoc and Stoic). Some names we have lined up for this year include Tay Mos, Sam Gray, The King Blues, and Missing Andy. (Those of you of you who asked to be involved in this when signing up to the mailing lists have been added to the team's list!) A big part of being a radio station is of course the music that we play. We are constantly sent music from all the big labels (and also lots of independent artists) which needs to be listened to, reviewed and eventually put into our play out system - Cahal is our Head of Music and leads an army of avid music fans whose task is just that. We've also got lots of interviews that can be arranged with bands at all times of the year and you also get guest-listed to their gigs. We’re all at Imperial and so therefore geeks, at least on the inside. This might not be “cool”, but it does mean that our technical side to the station is pretty damn good! As you can imagine there is a lot of upkeep and challenges associated with keeping a radio station running. We also do things like outside broadcasts from the annual Varsity (Imperial vs. the Medics in various sports over a big competition) which are fun and a good experience to be a part of. In fact, we're planning on covering the RCSU science challenge in January if you don't believe me. If you want to find out more from the technical side email our Technical Manager, Oli, at technical(a)icradio.com<mailto:technical@icradio.com> We also make a point of hiring out our equipment to parties and events to make some extra cash so we buy new toys (and pay our license fees, etc), and there're always opportunities for budding DJ's to play some gigs. If you're keen to put your name down for this side of things, email our Disco Manager, Alejandro, at discos(a)icradio.com<mailto:discos@icradio.com><mailto:discos@icradio.com> “So I’m interested in finding out more, what next?” We are going to have our first social event from 7PM on Monday 10th October, our annual “Beer and Biscuits” night. This is a meet and greet where you can come along and have a chat to our committee and ask us any questions that you have. It’s basically our own version of Fresher’s Fair, just a little bit less hectic and with lots more free beer! (and other drinks) The event will be held in the Level 8 Physics Common Room in the Blackett Building, a really cool venue with a roof terrace and great views over South Ken (map included as attachment). Make sure that you come along if you can. We are student radio, and so part of the “SRA” – Student Radio Association. On Wednesday 12th October we have the "I Love Student Radio Training Day" follwed by the annual SRA Nominations Party. The training day is being attended by professional radio names like Mark Crossley (Absolute), Maddii Lown (Newsbeat), Emma Stephens (BBC Radio 1xtra), and the nominations party is where we'll find out if any of our entries from last year have been nominated for awards. The afterparty is being held in a Camden club and is open to any student radio guys – http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=149523271808165 This is another great chance to come along and meet our committee, especially if you are new to London and haven’t been to Camden yet. Depending on numbers and if people want to attend both the training day and party, etc., we might all meet up and go together. Another Power Cut!

Dear All, Guess what. There was another power cut early this morning. This time, all of south kensington was affected. I have only been made aware of this just now hence I did not know that our streaming and recording servers were down. I will be in tomorrow morning to fire them up again. ***RADIO AWARDS TICKETS! - MUST REPLY ASAP***

Hey lads and ladettes! Good news, we are officially at and over FULL MEMBERSHIP! Thanks to everyone who bought theirs - we can now access our full Union grants! YAY! Just a gentle reminder, if you want to come to the the Student Radio Awards at the IndigO2 (London's O2 arena) on Wednesday the 9th of November, please let me know ASAP so we can try subsidising tickets! Without any subsidising, NON-DINING TICKETS ARE 30 POUNDS (including VAT). Non-dining tickets include drinks reception, balcony seat for the awards ceremony and after-party. Depending on how many people email me, we may be able to subside at least the VAT charges. =) Black tie, official BBC hosts and interviewers, and a load of uber-cool radio people all in THE concert venue of London? Update on IC Radio

Hey everyone, Firstly, as I hope you've all seen, IC Radio is back up and running now as normal - please let Oli know if you notice anything strange or peculiar in the aftermath of our brief shutdown at technical(a)icradio.com<mailto:technical@icradio.com>. So what happened? Yesterday morning the college received a serious complaint about offensive material on an IC Radio show, stating "defamation of character" as their primary objection to the programme. The offending show has since been taken off the website, and the presenter has been informed of the situation, and we are dealing with it appropriately in conjunction with the Union. Just a little bit about the legality of what defamation is and how it affects us: "Defamation comprises an untrue imputation against the reputation of individuals, companies or firms, which serves to undermine that reputation in the eyes of right thinking members of society generally, by exposing the victim to hatred, contempt or ridicule. Defamatory material published on the radio amounts to libel and damages can be awarded without the need for the claimant to prove specific loss. " What this means for us is that we can make statements of fact provided that we have evidence to support them, and express opinions under the heading of "fair comment" (i.e. - "He's really irritating" is preferable to and more acceptable than "He's the world's most annoying person and absolutely toxic") without being subjected to legal proceedings. (On a side note, it is also preferable for everyone to speak English on their shows, so that in any situation like this we are always able to understand exactly what is being said!) I want to use this opportunity to remind everyone that they are responsible for what they (or anyone else on their show) says on air. IC Radio and Imperial are NOT responsible for what happens on your show, and you will be the one to take the heat should an event like this happen to you. Obviously, something like this could really hurt the reputation of the establishment, so IC Radio will always help in these situations, but just be aware that ultimately it is you that will take the blame, not the station. We understand that these things occasionally happen, and so, if you think that there is something a little dodgy on a show you've done then let me know and I'll take the show down. Anyway, scary bit said, radio is back up and running as normal - just everyone, please be aware when broadcasting that our shows are accessible by anyone from anywhere. Also, have lots of fun - don't let something like this scare you off doing your banterous shows! Thanks, and I'll be in touch gain soon with a more general and cheery update of station news! ***BLACK TIE EVENT IN INDIGO2!***

Hey everyone! Been a while since I've updated on the radio front, apologies, internet in the house hasn't been quite living up to its contracted expectations! Anyway, we've got a major radio event coming up soon that tickets need to be arranged for - the Student Radio Awards are on at the IndigO2 (London's O2 arena) on Wednesday the 9th of November. One of the few events that is actually black-tie, this is going to be an absolutely brilliant night, and the station even has a nomination for Best Newcomer (yours truly!), and so any support on the night would be greatly appreciated on my own behalf, and also to make some noise in general about IC Radio! Woooo! So, if you want to go to this event, please get back to me ASAP with your name - when we have numbers, we might be able to do something about subsidising tickets, although with this year's considerably tightened budget I'm not sure how possible that may be. :( But we will try our best - even without subsidising we will all get "Members-Only" prices as IC Radio is a member station of the SRA, ergo, we all get the perks. =) For some info about the night, check out this link: http://studentradio.org.uk/news/3929. Here's the most important excerpt: "The awards take place on the 9th November 2011 at the IndigO2, in London’s O2 Arena. BBC Radio 1 presenters Annie Mac and Scott Mills will be hosting on stage, with former Chair of the Student Radio Awards, Huw Stephens, becoming a roaming reporter for the second year running, gaining reactions from the audience as the results are announced." In other radio news, we are VERY NEARLY at full membership, YAAAAAY! For anyone who hasn't yet bought membership, please do so that we can hit our magical number of 65 to get access to our full budget: http://www.imperialcollegeunion.org/radio-211/radio-membership/product.html The key list should be functional now - it was updated online with all our new members' names last week but apparently the physical copy in security had yet to be updated as of yesterday. I'm good at strongly-worded emails, so this problem should be rectified! Sophie has been tipping away at training sessions and getting everyone a show slot - snaps for her! Let her know if you want a show and haven't heard anything about training/slots yet, programming(a)icradio.com Rob and Seth have been organising live sessions - if you want to attend or help out, production(a)icradio.com Craig is doing promotion for our shows - whip up a poster and email it to him so that he can plaster it around Imperial! promotions(a)icradio.com Plenty of free gigs and interview possibilities about the place too - anyone on music mailing lists will have been getting emails from Cahal, let him know if you haven't and are keen for a free gig! music(a)icradio.com So, in short, contact me if you're coming to the Radio Awards, and buy membership if you haven't yet done that so we can at least try to subsidise tickets! Now, if you'll excuse me, I must get back to the kitchen/insert female joke here. Fist pump!

Tech issues

Hi all, There was a power cut at 5am this morning that has caused our system to reboot. Unfortunately the system has not been able to reboot properly by itself. At present show recording is currently not working. I need to go to the studio and set it up but alas I am not in london until Sunday lunchtime so please be aware that for the time being, the stations recording and (potentially) broadcasting facilities are not fully functional. As I said before this is due to a union power cut at 5am this morning. Apologies, Oli
