Dear all, today, we have Daniel Shapero (UW) visiting us. He is the developer of icepack, which does glacial modelling, built on top of firedrake. This afternoon he's giving a talk. If you are on campus, do come along, it should be good fun. Lawrence -------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: [AMCG-Seminars] Seminar this Friday Date: Wed, 7 Mar 2018 15:18:09 +0000 From: Wallwork, Joe <j.wallwork16@imperial.ac.uk> To: amcg-seminars <amcg-seminars@imperial.ac.uk> CC: Daniel R. Shapero <shapero@uw.edu> Hi all, _Reminder:_ Seminar *4-5pm, Friday 9th March* in the *Grantham Boardroom*. *Speaker:* Daniel Shapero, University of Washington. *Title:* Modeling the flow of glaciers with icepack *Abstract:* Predicting the extent of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets in the coming century is one of the most pressing questions facing the glaciological community. In this talk, I will give an overview of glacier physics, describe how modeling fits into glaciological research as a whole, and give a demo of the glacier flow modeling library icepack. In addition to the scientific goals of enabling prediction and state estimation for glaciers, one of the main aims for icepack is to lower the barrier to entry to using models for practitioners. I'll conclude by discussing the usability considerations that went into the design of icepack, and how the finite element package firedrake has been instrumental in the design. *Code repo:* https://github.com/icepack/icepack *Documentation:* https://icepack.github.io Best wishes, Joe and Anton AMCG seminar organisers
