Dear colleagues and friends,
I am very sad to inform you that our friend, colleague and supporter
Professor Hans Petter Langtangen passed away yesterday, on October
10th 2016, after an extended fight with cancer.
Among his many achievements, Hans Petter was a Fellow at
Simula Research Laboratory, a Professor of computer science at the
University of Oslo, Editor-in-Chief of SIAM Journal of Scientific
Computing, and Director of the Centre of Excellence for Biomedical
Computing.
Hans Petter has been a crucial and long standing supporter,
contributor, mentor, and advocate for the FEniCS Project and the
FEniCS community. Many of us also know him for his books on scientific
programming, Python, and partial differential equations. Hans Petter
was truly passionate about his work and intensified his efforts,
completing multiple new books in particular, after becoming ill.
Hans Petter was an unusually inspirational and visionary man, always
providing enthusiasm, encouragement, inspiration and insight. He will
be deeply missed by his family, friends and colleagues all over the
world.
Simula has organized a memorial website for Hans Petter where we
invite you to post condolences and memories:
We will also find other ways to honor his memory in the times to come.
Sincerely yours,
Marie Rognes
