Ah ok, I just thought it'd save me from forgetting to start the virtualenv each time since I never run any code that's not firedrake. Anyway, it works fine with the default virtualenv install - thanks David! That's a little tested option which is basically only there for supercomputers. Using the usual virtualenv install (probably with --developer) is strongly recommended.
