Fork the firedrake repo on github and clone your own fork in step 1. Then proceed as you have done previously. You should be able to push your new branch to your own fork, and you can file a pull request from there.

I presume this means that I can't push it because I don't have permissions to the firedrake repo.   If someone can tell me how should add this demo that would be great.
