[FILM-Users 00687] UPDATE FILM guidelines and policies
Dear FILM users, FILM has recently undergone the annual Health & Safety review and while we have passed with "very good", H&S asked us to clarify some of our policies and you will find them below and in the updated FILM user guide on the internet. Please read these carefully and follow them accordingly. We also put up some new signs regarding waste disposal and the location of the nearest hand washing facilities in the microscope rooms. Furthermore, the cabinet in room 409 (widefield microscopes) is only to be used as a working area and not as a safety cabinet (as it is not certified for such use)! Please make sure that all containers with liquid are labelled with content and your name, even if they contain only distilled water! Lab coats Lab coats must be worn when carrying out any wet lab or in vivo work and when working with organisms requiring higher containment levels; green lab coats are for working with animals. Biological Waste disposal Only class 1 waste can be disposed of in the orange bins provided in the microscope rooms. The appropriate disposal of GM / class 2 and animal waste is the responsibility of the users. GM / class 2 waste must not be disposed in the orange bins unless it has been chemically deactivated or autoclaved. Lone working When using the FILM facility outside the normal hours (07:00 - 19:00 from Monday to Friday) the College's Out of Hours and Lone Working Policies apply and it is the responsibility of the user to get prior authorisation from his or her supervisor and complete a risk assessment. Copies of both, authorisation and risk assessment, have to be shown to FILM staff prior to commencement of the lone working.
