The recent development of the field of Optogenetics provides researchers with unparalleled control over brain circuits. Optogenetics works by imparting light sensitivity onto ‘blind’ neurons by transgenic expression of light sensitive ion channels or ion pumps that are then remotely activated by flashes of light. The presentation will introduce the Optogenetic technology and will describe the development of a technique that enable complex spatiotemporal stimulation patterns for studying neural network dynamics, neuronal disorders and for neural prosthesis applications.
