Best, Robert --------------- Open Postdoc Position in Experimental Systems Biology of Phagocytosis at Imperial College, London: A 20-months post-doctoral research position is available at Imperial College London to apply a systems-biology approach and quantitative imaging to phagocytosis, i.e. how cells of our immune system bind, engulf, and destroy bacteria and inert particles. Phagocytosis is a spatio-temporally defined multi-step process including ligand-receptor binding and signalling to the cell’s acto-myosin cytoskeleton for engulfment. Quantitative imaging is essential in order to understand better how these processes are coordinated and sensitive to the physical properties of the particle (size, shape, elasticity, ligand density). The successful candidate will image receptors, actin and myosin proteins in phagocytic cups using live-cell fluorescence microscopy of transfected RAW macrophage-like cells, as well as scanning-electron microscopy to quantify cup shapes. He/she will conduct phagocytic assays of bacteria and opsonized particles of different shapes coupled with dissection of the underlying cell signalling. Assays may also be conducted in a flow chamber. The successful candidate will join the lab of Prof. Gadi Frankel (g.frankel@imperial.ac.uk) in the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology located on South Kensington campus. The group works in molecular pathogenesis, host-pathogen interactions, and experimental systems biology. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with modeller and biological physicist Dr. Robert Endres at Imperial College. A modeller postdoc will conduct image analysis and modelling. Further support will be provided by the FILM imaging centre for light microscopy at Imperial College, featuring state-of-the-art equipment. The successful candidate will hold a PhD (or equivalent qualification) in molecular or cell biology with expertise in tissue culture, fluorescence microscopy and laboratory assays, as well as strong interest in a multidisciplinary collaborating with modellers. Sorry for the mass email - have a BBSRC grant with Prof. Gadi Frankel on particle-shape dependence of phagocytosis, which combines live-cell imaging and transfection of RAW macrophages (postdoc 1) with mathematical modelling and image analysis (postdoc 2). The grant has been running for about one year, with two more to go.
The experimental postdoc just quit to take a much better paying position in industry in central London, and so we are looking for anyone to continue the experimental work as soon as possible. If you know of anyone potentially interested, maybe a finishing PhD student or so, please have him/her contact us.
