Dear microscopists, again, our FILM Image Of The Year 2012 competition has produced some spectacular images, but at the end, one image had the edge for the judges. As Catherine Wood from Tate Modern put it: ""Purely as a strong image I think the ventricle photograph number 10 is stunning... They are all beautiful though". So this year's winner of the FILM Image Of The Year competition is: ANITA ALVAREZ LAVIADA with her beautiful image of cardiomyocytes. Believe it or not, she has only just learned using our microscopes last October, and has convinced our judges straightaway. Congratulations, Anita, a really impressive achievement! I'm sure you will enjoy the first prize, the iPod nano, during your time at the microscopes. See the winning image and all other entries on our website: <http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/portal/page/portallive/imagingfacility/research/gallery/film_image_of_the_year/fioty-2012> A big THANKS to all entrants, but also to the JUDGES, who didn't have it easy - and of course, last but not least, to MOLECULAR PROBES / LIFE TECHNOLOGIES for their generous sponsorship. And as you can imagine, the calendars with the best 12 images look very impressive - they are still available, for £20 you can order your own copy. Those who didn't make it for the top prize, don't forget there are other competitions out there, have a look at the links on the FILM website under LINKS / MEETINGS, COURSES, COMPETITIONS. And those who didn't submit an image this year - the next one is only ten months away, so start watching out for that special one... Congratulations, and good imaging in 2013, Martin ########################################### *Martin Spitaler, PhD* *FILM - Facility for Imaging by Light Microscopy* - Facility Manager - Sir Alexander Fleming Building, desk 401 Imperial College London / South Kensington Exhibition Road London SW7 2AZ UK Tel. +44-(0)20-759-42023 E-mail m.spitaler@imperial.ac.uk <mailto:m.spitaler@imperial.ac.uk> Website: http://imperial.ac.uk/imagingfacility
